RESUMO

Objetivo:

Este artigo discute as bases contextuais e científicas quenorteiam a recomendação do Ministério da Saúde para o uso dedentifrícios fluoretados como medida populacional de saúde pública, em especial para crianças, no Brasil.

Método:

Com base na recomendação de uso de dentifrício fluoretado explicitada em publicação do Ministério da Saúde e na literatura relacionada, buscou-se contextualizar aspectos éticos, informacionais e científicos da realidade que justificassem tal recomendação.

Resultados:

A análise contextual e científica justifica a recomendação do uso de dentifrício fluoretado, inclusive na primeira infância, como importante medida de saúde pública no Brasil.

Conclusão:

Para garantir sua efetividade e segurança, é essencialque as informações sobre sua utilização sejam disseminadas àpopulação de forma clara e baseadas na evidência científicadisponível. Medidas de vigilância em saúde, sanitária e ambiental, devem assegurar os benefícios do uso de fluoretos em dentifrícios para toda a população, e em especial para crianças, bem como deve ser assegurado o acesso ao produto e a informação sobre sua utilização segura com equidade.
ABSTRACT

Objective:

This paper aims to discuss the contextual and scientificbases that guide the recommendation of the Ministry of Health for use of fluoridated toothpaste as a population public health measure, especially for children, in Brazil.

Methods:

Based on the recommendation of the use of fluoridated toothpaste expressed in a publication of the Ministry of Health and on the selected literature, aimed to contextualize ethical, informational and scientific aspects that justify such recommendation.

Results:

The contextual and scientific analysis justifies the recommendation of the use of fluoridated toothpaste, including during the early childhood, as an important public health measure in Brazil.

Conclusion:

In order to guarantee the effectiveness and safety of themeasure, it is important to disseminate to the public clear andevidence-based information about fluoridated toothpaste use. Measures of health, sanitation, and environmental surveillance shouldensure the benefits of the use of fluoridated toothpaste for the entirepopulation, and especially for children. It is also important toguarantee access to the product and information about its safe use with equity.
