ABSTRACT
Paper states that the tradition of women's self-reliance and ability to find solutions for themselves has contributed to the global recognition of the health inequities facing women. While women live longer than men, there is recognition that for many, their lives are often spent with chronic illness and disability. This represents suffering and loss of productivity, while is tragically largely preventable, using relatively low-cost interventions. Overall development and education are central to global health. Governments should pursue policies that emphasize the reduction of poverty, and expand basic schooling, especially for girls. Increased spending o health is also part of the solution. Yet the reality in many developing countries is that economic recessions and restructuring have resulted in increases in unemployment, poverty and diminishing access to health. Cost-effectiveness of health services, self care and prevention, coupled with rational use of health services will promote health and development, and reduce the demand on financial resources. Finally, support for women's rights to make responsible decisions for themselves, their families and their communities, and their right to the information and services that will promote their health, is essential(AU)
