RESUMO

Neste artigo, refletimos especificamente sobre a repercussão do envelhecimento nas capacidades cognitivas. A entrevista realizada com uma idosa deixou transparecer dificuldades na atenção e na memória que poderiam se identificadas como um início de declínio cognitivo. Todavia, sua história reforça a idéia de que este depende mais da possibilidade de convívio social e das oportunidades que o idoso teve durante sua vida, do que de um processo puramente biológico de perdas progressivas.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This article reflects specifically on the repercussion of aging over cognitive capacities. An interview carried out with an aged woman shows some difficulties in attention and memory that could be identified as the beginning of cognitive of cognitive decline. However, her life history strengthens the idea that cognition is more related to the possibilities of social contact and the opportunities that the elderly had during their life, rather than to a purely biological process of gradual losses.
