Violência doméstica: por que é tão difícil lidar com ela? / Domestic violence: why is it so difficult to deal with?

RESUMO

A presença de violência nas relações interpessoais é hoje um dos motivos que leva um grande número de pessoas a buscarem ajuda tanto em serviços de saúde e de psicologia quanto em instituições jurídicas e policiais. A complexidade das dinâmicas de violência doméstica nos coloca diante da responsabilidade de refletir criticamente e de buscar caminhos para entender e lidar com esses processos. Iniciamos o artigo com uma breve discussão sobre os mitos, preconceitos e desafios que podem gerar dificuldades para a compreensão e a atuação adequadas. Em seguida apontamos alguns dos impactos da violência sobre a saúde física e mental. Por último introduzimos três situações clínicas para ilustrar e ajudar a refletir sobre aspectos da experiência de violência, das dimensões do atendimento e da postura profissional. Concluímos enfatizando que o comportamento violento faz parte da condição humana e que a interação entre gênero, cultura, fatores socioeconômicos e dinâmicas pessoais, interpessoais e familiares tem um papel importante na compreensão da violência. ABSTRACT

The presence of violent behavior in interpersonal relationships has lead a great number of persons to seek professional help in psychological services as well as in health, law enforcement and legal institutions. The complexity involved in the dynamics of domestic violence makes us responsible for searching for ways to understand and deal with it. This article begins with a brief discussion of the myths, prejudices and challenges that may prevent us from understanding and dealing with it adequately. Then, we present some of the impacts of violence on physical and mental health. Last we introduce three clinical vignettes to help us to illustrate and discuss the different aspects of the experience of violence and some dimensions of the clinical management of cases and of the professional conduct. We conclude by emphasizing that violent behavior is part of the human condition and that the interaction among gender, culture and socioeconomic factors and personal, interpersonal and family dynamics play an important role in understanding domestic violence.
