ABSTRACT
The following paper presents the interface between insanity and society in colonial Brazil, examining the changes occurred with the royal familys arrival, the imperial phase and the newly proclaimed republic. Within this changes, Pedro IIs act of majority can be seen as the first legislation that associates mental health and treatment, perforce in hospitals. We study here the legislations covering national territory and its amendments on the mental health care area in the period from 1841 to 1930, and also the evolution of alienism and the new development of psychiatry as a medical subject, as well as an increasing body of knowledge.(AU)
