ABSTRACT
This article aimed to understand the impact that the different models of treatment/reception process, harm reduction and abstinence have on the health –illness process of the person who makes harmful use of psychoactive substances, and identify how is the practice of professionals in these different forms of treatments/ receptions. Therefore, an integrative literature review was performed in the databases SciELO, PePSIC, BVS LILACS, in the period from 2001 (from the Psychiatric Reform) until 2019. In the analysis of the results, we found the abstinence treatment strongly represented by the Therapeutic Communities (CTs) and the harm reduction represented by the Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS), which were gaining strength in the last years. By means of the theme’s discussion, we conclude that the ideal model is that which respects the person’s autonomy over his life, his characteristics, his pattern of use and the consequences that it brings, be it emotional, physical or social, since that contributes to the promotion of health and guarantee of his rights.(AU)
