ABSTRACT
Esophagogastric variceal bleeding is a life-threatening complication of cirrhotic portal hypertension. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is an effective method for the treatment and prevention of esophagogastric variceal bleeding; however, right timing of TIPS and selection of appropriate candidates for TIPS are of vital importance in improving patientssurvival rate and reducing mortality rate. This article reviews the intended population and right timing of TIPS for the treatment and prevention of esophagogastric variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis.
