ABSTRACT

The capacity of the rumen (paunch) was determined in a group of 15 adult and female Zebu cattle (Nelore breed), by emptying this compartment of the stomach, then filling it with water. Measuring the water volume, thus contained, the authors found that the average capacity of the rumen in these animals was 100.62 ± 3.91 L. Further, a statistically significant correlation was found between rumen capacity and both carcass length and weight.

RESUMO

Mediu-se a capacidade do rúmen em 15 bovinos anelorados, fêmeas, adultas (acima dos 49,9 meses de idade), encontrando- se como media 100,62 ± 3,91 L. Os coeficientes de correlação entre capacidade do rúmen e comprimento da carcaça e entre capacidade do rúmen e o peso da carcaça mostraram-se estatisticamente significantes.
