RESUMEN

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo en 330 niños de 0-6 años de edad en 26 consultorios del médico de la familia en el municipio especial Isla de la Juventud, durante el año 1999. Los niños objeto de estudio se distribuyeron de forma equitativa por los 26 consultorios del médico de la familia, teniendo en cuenta las tasas de prevalencia de niños de 0 a 6 años. Para la recogida de la información se aplicó una encuesta a las madres de los niños seleccionados, la información recogida se procesó en una. base de datos confeccionada al efecto en el programa EPI 6; los resultados fueron El comportamiento del modo de alimentación por biberón en general (usan y han usado) en el grupo de estudio es de 84,5 por ciento y para los que usan actualmente de un 42 por ciento; según edades se constata que los porcentajes se mantienen altos y sin diferencias significativas a la prueba Chi cuadrado con valores que oscilan desde el 74,5 por ciento en menores de 1 año hasta 90,2 por ciento y 94,7 por ciento en las edades de 5 y 6 años respectivamente; en cuanto al uso actual se observa gran fluctuación que va desde un 70.2 por ciento en menores de un año hasta el 21.2 por ciento en los de 4 años; el 41.9% de los niños lo usan en el período de 4 meses.
