RESUMEN

Introducción: las afecciones en la articulación temporomandibular son de etiología compleja y multifactorial, ocasionando daño a los músculos masticatorios, las estructuras asociadas o ambas. En Cuba, varios trabajos realizados orientan a la alta prevalencia entre 40 y 65 por ciento en los adultos de 40 a 50 años de edad. Objetivo: caracterizar la disfunción temporomandibular en pacientes mayores de 20 años atendidos en la Clínica estomatológica del Policlínico Ángel Ortiz Vázquez. Material y Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal. La muestra estuvo constituida por 155 pacientes mayores de 20 años, de ambos sexos, con disfunción temporomandibular, procedentes de la consulta de prótesis en la clínica estomatológica del Policlínico Ángel Ortiz Vázquez" del municipio de Manzanillo. Las variables estudiadas fueron sexo, edad, hábitos deformantes, tipo de desdentamiento y signos y síntomas presentes. Las fuentes de información fueron las encuestas e historias clínicas individuales de los pacientes. Resultados: en la investigación se evidenció que en los pacientes con disfunción temporomandibular el desdentamiento parcial predominó en 71 por ciento y el sexo femenino en 71,6 por ciento, con predominio de la masticación unilateral en 53,54 por ciento. Conclusiones: en los pacientes estudiados predomina el grupo de edad de 50 a 59 años, el sexo femenino, el desdentamiento parcial y la masticación unilateral como hábito deformante. Además hay predominio del chasquido y la crepitación, mientras el dolor es el síntoma menos frecuente(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: complaint in the temporomandibular joint have a complex and multifactorial etiology causing damage to the mastication muscles, associated structures or both. Several researches that have been carried out in Cuba show a high prevalence between 40 percent and 65 percent in adults aged 40 to 50 years old. Objective: to characterize the temporomandibular dysfunction in patients over 20 years old assisted in the Dental Clinic at Ángel Ortiz Vázquez, Polyclinic. Material and methods: a descriptive cross-section study was carried out. The sample was constituted by 155 patients over 20-years old both male and female, suffering from temporomandibular dysfunction, from the prosthesis outpatient consult in the dental clinic belonging to polyclinic Ángel Ortiz Vázquez in the Municipality of Manzanillo. The studied variables were sex, age, deforming habits, type of teeth loss, and signs and symptoms present. The sources of information were the survey and the individual clinical records of the patients.Results: the research showed that in the patients suffering from temporomandibular dysfunction the partial teeth loss prevailed in a 71,6 percent and the female sex predominated in a 71.6 percent, with predominance of unilateral mastication in a 53,54 percent.Conclusions: in the studied patients affected with temporomandibular dysfunction predominates the group of age from 50 to 59 years old, the female sex, unilateral mastication as deforming habit and partial teeth loss. There is also predominance of crackling, while pain is the less frequent symptom(AU)
