ABSTRACT
The evaluation of the seismic behavior of existing buildings designed without adequate seismic provisions and the study of techniques to retrofit such structures represent two important topics regarding economical, social and technical aspects. In Europe, New Zealand, Japan and US there are a number of research groups active on these subjects and some interesting papers are now available.On this subject reference should be made to the CEB documents [CEB 1991,1993] which cover most of the studies developed during the last years. Furthermore, some recent studies of the authors will be considered.(AU)
