ABSTRACT
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a problem of major concern in the Caribbean, where it threatens to overburden the already hard-pressed health infrastructure. The disease is advancing rapidly in the region and is exhibiting a changing pattern of transmission that makes it harder to control. This report describes the extent of the problem in the English-speaking Caribbean and Suriname, and outlines the steps being taken in a joint effort being coordinated subregionally to limit the further spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
