ABSTRACT

Evidence suggests that women are infected by the HIV virus at any earlier age than men. Increased risks for younger women and girls of contracting HIV are also associated with sexual abuse and rising levels of prostitution. Despite the intensive National AIDS Awareness Campaign which has been spearheaded by the Ministry of Health since 1987; women still have limited knowledge about HIV/AIDS; its transmission and symptoms. It is as a result of continued evidence on these issues identified by the Women and AIDS Support Network (WASN) that the Network wishes now to embark on an appropriate; problem-solving research programme. The research project proposed here seeks firstly to investigate cultural norms; in relationship to both sex education and women's control over their sexuality; their relevance and meaning. Secondly; it is proposed to work with groups and communities of women to develop strategies; techniques and alternative mechanism through which women may inform themselves and other girls and women about HIV/AIDS; and utilise to safeguard themselves against sexual practices which increase their risk of HIV infection. The third aim is to explore and develop the potential for community-based self-help and support groups of women. Information arising from the reseach programme will be of considerable assistance in strengthing the advocacy role of the Women and AIDS support Network; the only agency in Zimbabwe focusing specifically on he needs of women in relation to HIV/AIDS
