ABSTRACT

To assess the association between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular diseases in dental patients in Cameroon, a prospective observational study was carried out in 3 hospitals in Cameroon from January 2013 to December 2015. Data on general condition, age, gender and lifestyle were collected during medical history taking. The Dutch Periodontal Screening Index assessed periodontal health during oral examination. The Wilcoxon test, the Fisher test and logistic regression analysis were performed. 558 patients (53.9% women) were included in the study. The mean age was 44±13 years (30 to 85). In terms of overall health, 161 (28.9%) had cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and 73 (13.1%) had diabetes. Hypertension accounted for 87.6% of CVD. In terms of periodontal diseases (PD), 431 (77.2%) patients had PD, the break-down by PD was 347 (62.2%) gingivitis and 84 (15%) periodontitis. Statistical associations were found between CVD and gingivitis [OR=4.30 (1.85-10.00), P=0.001], and CVD and periodontitis [OR=2.87 (1.04-7.93); P=0.04]

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper was to assess the oral health knowledge and attitude of public health nurse students at Muhimbili Public Health Nurse School. The questionnaire was used to assess both knowledge and attitude. A total of 43 students participated in this study. The results show that the group had high knowledge on etiology and prevention of tooth decay (81.4 per cent); but very low knowledge on the etiology and prevention of gingivitis (21 and 44 per cent respectively). A high proportion of the participants showed positive attitude towards oral health. Since tooth decay is the leading cause of tooth loss in Tanzania; it can be concluded that the oral health knowledge and attitude of the public health nurses students 1989/90 was adequate for them as future oral health educators in Tanzania

ABSTRACT

A prospective study was undertaken at the children's clinic of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital; Ile-Ife; to determine the pattern of tooth loss among 623 suburban Nigerian children. The range of the children was between one and a half to 15 years with a mean and standard deviation of 9.9 and 3.7 years respectively. Most of the teeth were lost in the permanent dentition and mixed dentition stages with 43.2 and 42.7 per cent respectively. There was no statistical significant difference in both sexes of various age group. Dental caries and necrotising ulcerative gingivitis were the most common causes of tooth mortality

ABSTRACT

The present study is on oral health conditions of 319 Tanzanian secondary school scholars; aged 14-17 years. The prevalence of caries was 51 per cent. The mean DT; MT and FT-score was 1.10; 0.22 and 0.03; respectively. Girls had significantly higher caries levels than boys (p = 0.005). Missing teeth were observed in 14 per cent of the scholars examined. Occlusal surfaces were the surfaces most affected and the molars the most affected tooth type. The prevalence of heavy plaque (score = 2); calculus and gingival bleeding was 42 per cent; 82 per cent and 44 per cent respectively. Boys had higher percentages of all sites covered with plaque; calculus and gingival bleeding than girls. The present survey amongst 14-17 years olds revealed a much higher caries experience and a higher prevalence of missing teeth due to caries than reported amongst 12-yr-old Tanzanian children. Since Tanzania has a population-based preventive strategy targeted at 0-15-yr olds; it is suggested monitoring changes in oral health conditions at the age of 15 instead of 12 years
