ABSTRACT

The high maternal mortality rate caused by late detection of risk factors for pregnant women is a major health problem in Banjarnegara District. One of the efforts made to overcome this problem is the implementation of assistance for one pregnant woman by one cadre (OPOC). The application of OPOC consists of four mentoring activities, namely reminders about antenatal care schedule, detecting risk factors, monitoring fetal movements, and carrying out delivery planning and handling complications. Therefore, this study aims to describe the implementation of OPOC as well as to evaluate cadres' performance in Banjarnegara District. A quantitative cross-sectional design was used, where a total of 200 cadres were selected as respondents using a representative purposive sampling method. The results showed that reminding mothers about their antenatal care schedule, detecting risk factors, monitoring of fetal health through movements, and making commitments for birth planning and complications prevention were carried out by 199 (99.49%), 129 (64.84%), 138 (69.05%), and 159 (79.42%) respondents, respectively. More than 92% of them know their duties and responsibilities as companions for pregnant women, but only 28% have knowledge about the benefits of assisting. Furthermore, 93% often carry out OPOC assistance. The knowledge of cadres about OPOC assistance was good, but some of them are not knowledgeable about its benefits. These findings show that they need guidance, training, and motivation from public health centers. (Afr J Reprod Health 2022; 26[7]: 83-89).

ABSTRACT

At the time of the Covid-19 pandemic one of the most vulnerable groups is that composed of migrant workers. Far from their home countries, many of them do not receive medical assistance while continuing to work as they do essential jobs. In addition, they are separated from their families due to entry restrictions at international borders. In this paper, we want to present the principles of the Catholic Church's integral ecology as a way to address the most urgent needs of migrant workers in this time of pandemic. We will first address the situation of migrant workers based on some recent studies. Then we will explain the principles of integral ecology according to the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. Finally, based on those principles, we will propose recommendations for policy makers regarding the care of immigrant workers in the context of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Although the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) has increased in the past years, they could experience secondary illness such as peripheral neuropathy (PN). Therefore, they need to adapt to chronic disablement which could affect their quality of life (QoL). The research that informed this article aimed at determining the prevalence of PN among adults living with HIV/AIDS and attending the outpatients' clinic at Rutongo Hospital in the Rulindo district of Rwanda. Another aim was to determine these patients' QoL. A cross-sectional descriptive quantitative research design was used. A time-constrained method was used to sample 185 adults living with HIV/AIDS and attending the outpatients' clinic at Rutongo Hospital. The subjective PN screen and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Brief Version were used to collect the data. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Student's t-test and one-way analysis of variance were performed to determine if significant differences existed between QoL scores in participants with and without PN symptoms. The results indicated that 40.5% of respondents experienced PN. QoL in participants with PN showed significantly lower scores in the physical (p ¼ 0.013) and psychological (p ¼ 0.020) domains when compared with those who did not have PN. These results indicate a high prevalence of neuropathy among PLWH attending the outpatients' clinic at Rutongo Hospital. In addition, patients with neuropathy had lower QoL scores in the physical and psychological domains than those without neuropathy symptoms. The management of PLWH should therefore include interventions to optimise QoL as well as screening for neuropathy symptoms so that sufferers can liaise with their medical providers to find medical and supportive therapies that could assist them

ABSTRACT

Conclusion.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiological data have rarely been generated during United Nations (UN) missions to Third World countries, even in situations where there is hardly any combat involvement. Continuous surveillance was therefore carried out during the 12-month stay of UN personnel in Namibia in 1989-90. In this population of 7114 persons, mostly young men, the mortality rate was 255 per 100,000; death was mainly due to traffic accidents. Hospitalization was chiefly because of fever of unknown origin or trauma. Repatriation to the country of origin was necessary in 46 patients, frequently for psychiatric reasons including alcoholism. Over this one-year period there were, on average, 2.7 new consultations per person for treatment (mostly for dental problems), and 0.8 per person for prophylactic measures. The extremely high mortality due to traffic accidents indicates a need for prevention. In the selection process for future missions, more emphasis should be given to the psychological and dental health of volunteers. All military contingents and civilian groups should learn about effective preventive measures prior to their arrival, and adhere to them
