ABSTRACT

Introduction : les valeurs de référence peuvent être obtenues à partir des bases de données. Nous nous proposons de produire ces valeurs à partir d'une base de données hématologiques et de souligner les contraintes inhérentes à cette méthodologie. Matériel et méthodes: Il s'agit d'une étude rétrospective, réalisée du 1er janvier 2015 au 30 mars 2017, au Centre National de Transfusion Sanguine de Libreville. Les dossiers des donneurs, dont les sérologies (HIV, AgHBs, Ac HVC, VDRL et TPHA) étaient négatives ont été retenus. Les paramètres de l'hémogramme ont été notés pour chaque dossier. L'identification des valeurs aberrantes a été réalisée à l'aide de la méthode de Cook, la nature de la distribution a été étudiée grâce au test de normalité de Shapiro-Wilk. Les limites de référence à 95% et leurs intervalles de confiance à 90% ont été calculés. La recherche des partitions a été effectuée à l'aide du z-test. Les différences étaient considérées comme statistiquement significatives, pour une valeur de p inférieure à 0,05. Résultats: ce protocole a concerné 27022 dossiers, dont 2013 (7,4%) ont été exploités. L'intervalle de référence à 95% des leucocytes allait de 2,8.103 à 6,1.103/mm3, alors que celui des hématies allait de 4,3.106 à 5,3.106/mm3et celui des plaquettes de 129,7.103 à 258,0.103/mm3. De plus, les hématies allaient de 4,4.106 à 5,3.106/mm3chez les hommes contre 4,4.106 à 5,1.106/mm3pour les femmes de même tranche d'âge.Conclusion: la réalisation d'une telle étude nécessite une collaboration interdisciplinaire, une bonne tenue des bases de données et nous rappelle la primauté d'une différence biologique, par rapport à une différence statistique

ABSTRACT

Background: Haematological values derived from local populations are useful in laboratories to improve diagnoses for local patients. In Cameroon, these data are not yet available. Moreover, there is great variation in baseline parameters pertaining to full blood cell count among medical laboratories.Objectives: This study aimed to determine values for the complete blood cell count of a healthy adult Cameroonian population for use in locally derived ranges in our medical laboratories.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among blood donors attending three blood banks in Yaoundé from November 2015 to September 2016. We expected to obtain at least 120 venous blood samples from both men and women. Tests were performed for (1) HIV, (2) complete blood cell count, (3) hepatitis B virus, (4) malaria, (5) syphilis, (6) C-reactive protein and (7) hepatitis C virus.Results: We enrolled 294 healthy participants (161 men, 133 women) aged 18 to 55 years. The median haemoglobin concentration was 135 g/L in men and 114 g/L in women (p < 0.001). The median reticulocyte count was 60 × 109/L in men and 40 × 109/L in women (p < 0.001).Significant variation by sex was observed for the platelet count. The median white blood cell count was 4.1 × 109/L in men and 4.6 × 109/L in women (p = 0.008). Conclusion: This study provides locally derived ranges for complete blood cell and reticulocyte counts for a healthy adult population in Yaoundé, Cameroon. These results can be used pending larger studies

ABSTRACT

Introduction: les valeurs spirométriques de référence ne sont pas extrapolables entre populations, étant tributaires de nombreuses variables humaines et environnementales, d'où l'intérêt des études locales dans ce domaine. L'objectif est de déterminer des valeurs de référence chez des adultes sains de Kinshasa. Méthodes: une étude transversale incluant 7443 sujets (3208 femmes, 43%). Le VEMS, la CVF et le DEP ont été corrélés aux données anthropométriques. Cinq groupes d'âge ont été constitués et les comparaisons effectuées en fonction du sexe, de l'âge, de l'IMC et de la pratique d'une activité sportive.Résultats: les différences sont évidentes entre sexes, pour le VEMS (3,00 vs 2,21 L), la CVF (3,19 vs 2,38 L), et le DEP (6,8 vs 5,70 L/s); de même que pour les tranches d'âge extrêmes. Elles sont comprises entre: 2,33 et 4,54 vs 1,93-3,3 L dans le groupe de 20-29 ans et 1,76-3,39 vs 1,60 vs 2,53 L chez les 60-70 ans; pour La CVF entre 2,44-4,89 vs 1,96-3,56 L et 1,79-3,78 vs 1,66-2,74 L; pour le DEP entre 4,34-12,2 vs 3,62-8,58 L/s et 2,99-6,76 vs 2,99-7,34L/s chez les 60-70 ans. Conclusion: les différences liées au genre, à l'âge, aux données anthropométriques ainsi qu'à la pratique d'une activité sportive sont évidentes. Ces résultats justifient des enquêtes plus étendues et montrent la pertinence des valeurs basées sur les percentiles dans la déterminantion d'un référentiel spirométrique dans une population donnée

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is important for the evaluation of patients with kidney disease. Some studies suggest that GFR estimated from serum cystatin C (Cys C) is more accurate than that from serum creatinine (SCr). For Cys C to be used for this purpose; normal values need to be determined for various populations. This study determined the serum Cys C levels and reference intervals (RIs) of a Nigerian population.Materials and Methods: Three hundred and four healthy adult subjects were analysed. Serum Cys C and SCr were determined by particle enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay and modified Jaffe kinetic method respectively. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17.0 (SPSS for Windows Inc.; Chicago; IL; USA). Estimation of RIs was done as per the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry guidelines.Results: The RIs for Cys C were 0.65-1.12 mg/L (median 0.86) for males; 0.62-1.12 mg/L (median 0.85) for females and 0.64-1.12 mg/L (median 0.86) for all the subjects. The RIs for SCr were 73-110 ?mol/L (median 89) for males; 65-102 ?mol/L (median 82) for females and 66-106 ?mol/L (median 86) for all the subjects. There was no significant gender difference in the RIs for serum Cys C; (P 0.05). The SCr levels and RI were significantly lower in females than in males (P 0.001).Conclusion: This study has determined the serum Cys C levels and RI of an indigenous healthy adult black population in Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Objective: Historically; changes in normal thyroid uptake values for iodine have been reported in different geographical areas. These changes have been linked to geographical and chronological fluctuations in dietary iodine intake in different populations. Namibia is a country with mixed ethnicity; with access to dietary iodine in table salt. Despite historical reports on deviating normal thyroid uptake values (emphasising the importance of establishing local normal reference values); the relevant Namibian authorities have never revised these reference values; nor have local reference values been established. The aim of this study was to establish the normal reference values for thyroid uptake of technetium-99m pertechnetate in the Namibian population.Design: Participants who were considered to be euthyroid completed a questionnaire designed to exclude individuals with thyroid pathologies; as well as those with renal or heart disease.Settings and subjects: The study cohort consisted of 76 participants (58 women and 18 men); ranging in age from 39-81 years. The participants were of mixed ethnicity; consisting of Hereros; Ovambos; Damaras; Namas; Coloureds; Caucasians and other (non-Namibian immigrants); and were from Windhoek; Namibia. Studies were performed at the Windhoek Central Hospital.Outcome measures: Blood was drawn for thyroid hormone assessment. Participants were then given 100 MBq of technetium-99m pertechnetate intravenously; and their percentage thyroid uptake recorded after 20 minutes. Results: In this study; thyroid-stimulating hormone; triiodothyronine; and thyroxine levels were found to be 1.7 ?IU/ml; 4.9 pmol/ml and 10.3 pmol/ml; respectively. Analysis of the empirical data showed that the normal reference uptake value for technetium-99m pertechnetate in the studied population ranged between 0.04 .The fifth and 95th percentiles for pertechnetate uptake were 0.15; respectively.Conclusion: These results provide new evidence which supports the importance of periodical evaluation of normal thyroid uptake reference values for technetium-99m pertechnetate

ABSTRACT

Purpose:To establish quantitative reference ranges for fasting profiles and oral glucose tolerance test for healthy adults in metropolitan region of Nairobi. Methods: A prospective study carried out on 871 healthy subjects from the metropolitan region of Kenya. Results: The fasting profile parameters investigated were fasting blood glucose (FBG); total cholesterol (TC) triglycerides (TG); high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC); low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) and TC/HDLC ratio. In addition; oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was also investigated. Eight hundred and seventy one (871) healthy study subjects were involved in the study. Established reference ranges were as follows: FBG (venous whole blood) (2.1 - 5.7) mmol/L; TC (2.9 - 6.4) mmol/L; TG (0.44- 2.44); HDL C (1.1 - 2.1) mmol/L; LDLC (1.1 - 4.3) mmol/L; TC/HDLC ratio (1.1 - 5.4). Established reference ranges for oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were as follows: baseline/fasting blood glucose capillary whole blood (3.2-5.4) mmol/L; half hour (4.7-8.9) mmol/L; one hour (4.4-9.8) mmol/L; one hour and half (4-8.1) mmol/L and two hours (3.4-7.2) mmol/L. Results for gender differences for the studied parameters were as follows: FBG (p=0.124); TC (p=0.205); TG (p=0.705) HDLC (p= 0.52); LDLC (p=0.417) and TC/HDLC ratio (p=0.359). On the other hand; the gender results for timed OGTT were as follows: 0 hour (p=0.123); half hour (p=0.479); one hour (p=0.412); one hour and half (p=0.596)) and two hours (p=0.630). Hence there were no gender disparities for the parameters in the studied adult Kenyan population. Conclusion: Since the established reference ranges are a reflection of the Kenyan adult population our clinical chemistry laboratory reports interpretations will henceforth be independent of what has been quoted in literature. Likewise effective diagnosis and management of glucose and lipids pathological disorders will be achieved by the use of established adult Kenyan reference ranges

ABSTRACT

Objectives : To estimate the reference intervals for commonly used blood haematology and biochemical parameters in an adult (18-55yrs) population of residents of Mampong Akuapem. Design: This was a population based cross sectional study of a randomly selected sample of the adult population of Mampong. The sample was selected from an updated census list of the Mampong area. Results: Median values (95 range) for measured parameters were established as follows: Haemoglobin; (males) 14.2 g/dl (females) 12.0 g/dl Alanine aminotransferase (ALT); (female) 19.6 U/L (males) 26.1 U/L and Creatinine; (males) 108 mmol/L (females) 93 mmol/L. Conclusion: In comparison to reference values that are commonly used in Ghana; the haemoglobulin levels from this study were lower; and liver function parameters higher. This could be a result of genetic or environmental differences and calls for the need to establish site specific reference values applicable to our population

ABSTRACT

Les objectifs ont ete de proposer une methode standardisee de l'examen microscopique de l'urine et de determiner les valeurs de reference. Cent dix-neuf echantillons recoltes lors de la premiere et/ou de la seconde miction matinale provenant de 100 sujets sains. Les urines etaient d'aspect limpide chez tous les sujets et de coloration jaune clair (58;80 pour cent); jaune fonce (27;7 pour cent) (jaune paille (13;4 pour cent). L'urine de la premiere et de la seconde miction constitue l'echantillon ideal pour l'examen microscopique urinaire. Les valeurs de reference obtenues sont comparables a celles rapportees dans la litterature. Ces resultats suscitent l'interet de la vulgarisation de la methode standardisee
