ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental disorder causing severe social and occupational dysfunction leading to high risk of suicidal ideas and behaviours. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of suicidality and its relationship to psychological (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and sociodemographic factors among individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Jordan. Methods: this is a descriptive correlational study. Data was collected using self-reported questionnaire from 90 individuals diagnosed with OCD from outpatient departments receiving care at public and private health institutions in Jordan. Data were collected regarding suicidality, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Results: Suicidal risk was detected in 34.4% % (N= 31) of the individuals with OCD, 90% had mild to severe depressive symptoms, 70% had mild to severe anxiety symptoms. Significant positive correlation found between suicidality, anxiety and depressive symptoms (p<.05). Individuals with OCD and suicidality had significantly lower educational level, contamination, trichotillomania, and sexual obsessions. Depressive symptoms and type of OCD were significant predictors for suicidality among individuals known to have OCD. Conclusion: Individuals with OCD have high risk for suicidality and should be carefully monitored. Health care professionals in the outpatients’ clinics are recommended to actively investigate suicidality risk as part of OCD comprehensive assessment per visit.

ABSTRACT

A field study was carried out on the population dynamics of the Mediterranean fruit fly [MFF] Cemtitis capitata Wied. males in Assuit governorates [upper Egypt] during 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 seasons in mixed orchards by using Jakson trap. The obtained data revealed that the occurrence of MFF was relatively ail over the two seasons with some exceptions, The abundance of the pest was higher in the second season than that in the first one. The higher appearance of the pest was recorded on September-November in both first and second seasons. Temperature had significant negative correlation [r=0.105] in the first season and insignificant negative correlation [r=0.076] in the first and second seasons, respectively. However, R.H.% had high significant positive [r=0.451] and insignificant positive [r=0.203] in the first and second seasons, respectively. Results obtained could be exploited in management of this insect pest especially, in the control programs

ABSTRACT

To examine the role of calpain-10 SNP-44, -43, -63 and del/ins-19 in genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM] and associations with triglycerides and total cholesterol in a group of subjects residing in the Gaza Strip. Ninety-six individuals were examined: 48 T2DM patients and 48 controls. The groups were genotyped for calpain-10 SNP-44, -43, -63, and del/ins-19. Mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction was used to examine SNP-44; del/ins-19 was examined by electrophoresis of the PCR product on agarose gel, while the restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used for SNP-43 and -63. There was evidence that the C allele at SNP-44 played a possible role in susceptibility to T2DM [p = 0.01]. T2DM patients with G/A genotype were found to have higher levels of total cholesterol in comparison to those homozygous for allele 1 [G/G] in SNP-43. Total cholesterol levels increased in T2DM patients who are homozygous for del/ins-19 allele 2, in T2DM patients with the 121/221 haplotype combination, and in control subjects with the haplotype combination 111/121. SNP-44 polymorphism of the calpain-10 gene has a significant association with T2DM patients in the Gaza strip. Certain polymorphisms of calpain-10 also have associations with the levels of total cholesterol in both T2DM patients and controls

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the presence of supragingival bacterial plaque and Porphyromona gingivalis before and after the implementation of an educational program for oral hygiene. Methods: 30 scholars were enrolled for 3 months, in order to strenghten their oral hygiene technique and obtain a gingival sulcus bacterial plaque sample monthly. Results: Porphyromona gingivalis was present in 100 percent of cases. After 30 days of intervention, oral hygiene reduction in O'Leary rate was 21.15 percent) and bacteria colony forming units in 21.51 percent. After 60 days, O'Leary Índex declined in 29.45 percent> and bacteria colony forming units in 16.12 percent. Conclusions: The implementation of an oral hygiene program has a direct impact in the composition of the gingival sulcus bacterial plaque and the decrease of Porphyromona gingivalis colony forming units, mainly at 30 days intervention.

ABSTRACT

To detect rotavirus antigen in infants and young children with acute diarrhea and gastroenteritis. Rotavirus is a major cause of gastroenteritis and diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Fecal samples from 150 children with ages ranging from 1 month to 5 years, living in Gaza, who presented with acute diarrhea episodes, were analyzed for rotavirus antigen. The analysis was carried out using an immunochromatography-based diagnostic kit [The Rota Stick One-Step test, Novamed Ltd, Jerusalem]. The study was conducted during the peak diarrheal season [May-August] of the year 2005. Rotavirus was detected in 28% [42/150] of the fecal specimens examined, and the majority of patients 90% [38/42], who were positive for the virus were 1 to 24 months old, and the infection rate decreased with increasing age. The highest rate of rotavirus antigen detection was observed among the 12 to 24 months age group 41.9%. Children infected with rotavirus were more likely to have watery stool [95.2%], vomiting [92.9%], moderate dehydration [14.3%] and fever has low frequency [73.8%]. The findings of this study demonstrate that rotavirus is one of the most frequently detected, yet a routinely neglected pathogen during stool examinations in Gaza strip health laboratories. Timely diagnosis of rotavirus infection in patients with acute diarrhea helps to determine appropriate treatment, prevents the unnecessary use of antibiotics and minimizes the spread of the disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report on occurrence of rotavirus infection among children of Gaza since 1994

ABSTRACT

Most physicians in Gaza prescribe medicaments for patient's suffering from Entamoeba histolytica/dispar without parasitologic diagnosis. Additionally, stool analysis performed by the routine methods usually reports the species as E. histolytica without confirmation. In this study, 92 stool specimens were collected and analyzed by wet mount, iron haematoxylin staining, antigen detection of E. histolytica and polymerase chain reaction [PCR]. The total number of E. histolytica identified by PCR was 64 that of E. dispar was 21. Mixed infection with both E. histolytica and E. dispar was evident in 7 specimens. In the light of these results, approximately 30% of suspected clinical amoebiasis cases were negative for E. histolytica. It is recommended to use PCR for diagnosis of stool specimens from patients with E. histolytica/dispar and that treatment should be prescribed for only patients positive for E. histolytica

ABSTRACT

The association accute of the intestinal occlusion and pregnancy is rare. 3 cases were reported in this study. The diagnosis was reported for 2 patients during the pregnancy respectiuely in the third and the first trionester of the pregnancy for the third patient the diagnosis was not evoered for the clinical signs discretion. The clinical boasd of the occlusion is complete. The obstetrical nest is difficult because of the abdominal defence the executed urgent laparotony in 2 cases confirme the diagnosis. The maternal pronostic depends on the reanimation and treatment precocity. we deplor a late post partum death. The festal pronostic is bad [2 fetal losses]. A review of literature confirms ours results
