ABSTRACT

Schistosomal bladder being the commonest solid malignant tumour in Egypt and being different from the transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder stimulated the present study to establish any association which may be present between it and HLA types. HLA typing was performed in 40 patients using the two stage lymphocytotoxicity method. Antisera supplied were used to define any of the 23 antigens at the HLA, A and B loci. Two control groups were included in our study the first was normal free controls and the second control group was schistosomal patients without any evidences of bladder cancer. The results of the present study showed absence of any association between schistosomal bladder cancer and any of the different 23 HLA antigens used

ABSTRACT

Isolation of influenza viruses was done from 50 cases of acute respiratory tract infection at El-Shatby Pediatric hospital from 15 th. September 1983 to January 1984.Influenza viruses were isolated by inoculation into embryonated chicken eggs from 7 cases and by inoculation on vero cell lines from 8 cases but this difference in isolation rates was statistically insignificant. The isolated strains were typed by direct immunofluorescent technique and all were belong to type A influenza virus. Vero cell line [Heteroploid African green Monkey Kidney] was used because its availability [from El-Agousa Research Center] easy to handle and its sensitivity to many types of viruses. Vero cell line proved to be a good host system for isolation of influenza viruses with a rapid hemadsorption and cytopathic effect within 72 hours after inoculation

ABSTRACT

Therapeutic trial of Minocycline hydrochloride [Minocin] in 13 male patients with uncomplicated acute gonorrhoea attending the special treatment clinic of A.B.U. teaching hospital, Zaria, was carried out, using a total dose of 900 mg [200 mg at the start followed by 100 mg 12 hourly for 4 days]. It is the first reported trial with this drug in Nigeria. Two of the patients got reinfected and were dropped from the trial. One failed, and ten representing 91%, were cured. It is suggested that a repeat trial in a larger population should be carried out, preferably with the 300 mg single dose, which with no doubt will be the most convenient regimen for both the patient and the doctor in our present local setting
