ABSTRACT

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by a dimorphic fungus from Sporothrix schenckii complex, which affects various species, especially feline, able to cause local, disseminated or systemic impairment. We aimed to report the occurrence of an outbreak of feline sporotrichosis in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. Swabs of skin ulcers in cats treated in the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco and in particular veterinary establishments were collected. Diagnosis was made by cytological examination and fungal culture. From 115 suspicious cases, 59 cases were confirmed, unprecedented results in the state of Pernambuco. These registered cases of feline sporotrichosis have demonstrated clinical and epidemiological characteristics similar to those occurring in other regions of the country, characterized as a quick-spreading disease, of difficult treatment, which affects predominantly semi-domiciled young males in reproductive age.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Salmonella detection is a key point in food safety testing, because of the frequent association of this pathogen with food poisoning in humans. The standard bacteriological tests currently used for Salmonella-detection are time-consuming; therefore, there is a need to develop alternative methods to accelerate the detection. In order to accelerate Salmonella diagnosis, we used the immunomagnetic separation assay associated with bacteriophage P22 for the rapid detection of the following Salmonella serovars in chicken rinses of drumsticks, artificially contaminated with 5, 10, and 100 CFU/25mL of bacteria: Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Heidelberg (S. Heidelberg), Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The efficiency of the technique, represented by the time required for detection of positive and negative samples, was compared with that of the standard diagnostic tests used for this pathogen, the bacteriological assay and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based test. This study confirmed the ability of the bacteriophage-associated immunomagnetic separation assay to identify 99.6% of Salmonella-positive samples of the three serovars tested. In contrast, the bacteriological assay and PCR-based test detected 95.1% and 98.5% of the Salmonella-positive samples respectively.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to perform a systematic literature review to determine if there is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that interferes less within tooth movement. This research was performed according to the PRISMA statement. Articles were searched in eight electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS, SciELO, Google Scholar, and Open Grey). Only experimental studies on male Wistar rats were selected, which included experiments related to the influence of NSAIDs on orthodontic movement. Studies in animals with pathological conditions, literature review articles, letters to the editor and/or editorials, case reports, abstracts, books, and book chapters were excluded. Each of the steps of this systematic literature review was performed by two examiners independently. Results: the total sample consisted of 505 articles, from which 6 studies were eligible after a qualitative analysis. From the drugs assessed, paracetamol was unanimous for not interfering within orthodontic movement when compared to the control group. However, drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, sodium diclofenac, and selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors caused a reduction in tooth movement when compared to the control group. Conclusion: paracetamol could be considered the drug of choice for pain relief because it interferes less within tooth movement.

ABSTRACT

Enterochromaffin cells are components of the intestinal mucosa to release serotonin lumen, promoting cell growth and secretory activity of various tissues, including intestinal villi. This study evaluated the influence of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) and m-hidroxibenzilhidrazine (NSD1015) associated with Lactobacillus spp. on body weight and development of intestinal villi in the proximal duodenum of broilers challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis. It was found that the presence of Lactobacillus spp. and Salmonella Enteritidis influenced immunostaining of serotonin in the duodenum. The study was divided into two experiments with and without challenge by S. Enteritidis. In Experiment 1, birds without challenge, body weights did not differ significantly (p>0.05), and in Experiment 2, the treatments with precursor and precursor associated with Lactobacillus spp. determined higher body weight of the birds. In both experiments the birds treated with 5HTP showed increased density and villus height in the duodenum, suggesting the presence of 5HTP as a trophic agent. The use of Lactobacillus spp. also determined greater duodenal villus height. The immunostaining of serotonin, birds treated with Lactobacillus spp. in Experiment 1, and the birds treated with Lactobacillus spp. and challenged with S. Enteritidis in Eperiment 2 showed higher values, suggesting that the presence of these bacteria promotes greater release of serotonin into the duodenum. The exact mechanism of how this process occurs needs to be further elucidated...

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of HIV-1-HTLV-1 coinfected patients, in Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: Retrospective, comparative study. RESULTS: Among a total of 123 consecutive HIV infected patients, 20 men (20.6 percent) and 6 women (23.1 percent) had detectable antibodies against HTLV-I/II. The major risk factor associated with coinfection by HTLV was intravenous drug use (57.7 percent of coinfected patient versus 9.2 percent of HTLV seronegative patients, p < 0.0001). Coinfected patients had higher absolute lymphocyte counts (1,921 + 762 versus 1,587 + 951, p = 0.03). Both groups of patients had similar means of CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts. However, among patients with AIDS CD4+ cell counts were significantly higher among those coinfected with HTLV-I/II (292 ± 92 cells/mm³, versus 140 ± 177cells/mm³, p = 0.36). The frequency and type of opportunistic infections were similar for both groups, but strongyloidiasis and encephalopathy were more frequently diagnosed in coinfected patients (p < 0.05). On the other hand, patients coinfected with HTLV-I/II received significantly less antiretroviral therapy than singly infected by HIV-1. CONCLUSION: Coinfection by HTLV-I/II is associated with an increased risk of strongyloidiasis for HIV patients. Higher CD4 count may lead to underestimation of immunodeficiency, and delay to initiate antiretroviral therapy.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the chemical investigation of the leaves and stems of Ouratea castaneifolia (DC.) Engl.. There are no chemical or pharmacological studies with this species. Classic phytochemical investigation of the organic extracts together with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedures lead to the identification of seventeen metabolites: seven triterpenes (friedelin, 3β-friedelinol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, lupeol, germanicol and taraxerol), four steroids (sitosterol, stigmasterol and the glycosides sitosteryl 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and stigmasteryl 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside), one isoflavone (5,7,4'-trimethoxyisoflavone), one flavone (5,4'-dihydroxy-7,3',5'-trimethoxyflavone) and four biflavones (amenthoflavone, 7,7"-O-dimethylamenthoflavone, heveaflavone and tetramethylamenthoflavone). The structures of the compounds were established by the analysis of ¹H, 13C NMR spectra including bidimensional techniques. The classes of the identified metabolites are in agreement with previous studies of the Ouratea genus.

ABSTRACT

Forty-nine AIDS patients, most of who were antiretroviral therapy (ARV) naïve, with active tuberculosis, were treated with Rifampin 600mg, Isoniazid 400mg and Pirazinamide 2g daily. They also received ARV, consisting of Efavirenz (600mg/day) plus 2 NRTIs. All patients were prospectively followed for at least 24 months. Baselines were: male/female ratio 2:1, mean age 34.7 ± 9.4 yrs; weight 51 ± 9.0 kg, viral load 5.6 ± 0.6 logs, CD4 cell count 101 ± 128 cells/ mm . Follow up mean values of data logs of VL and CD4+ cell /mm counts were: VL 1.7 and CD4+ 265; VL 1.3 and CD4+ 251; VL 1.4 and CD4+ 326 at 6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. Weight gain changes were: 5 ± 9.9 ± 12 and 21 ± 16 kg respectively at 6, 12 and 24 months. A non-concomitant ARV regimen was introduced at least three weeks after TB treatment initiation. Severe adverse reactions included rash (two), toxic hepatitis (six), Immune Reconstitution Syndrome (seven), and four deaths. We conclude that Efavirenz at a daily dose of 600 mg is sufficient and safe to treat HIV/TB patients using a Rifampin containing regimen.
