ABSTRACT

News media play a critical role in tobacco control. To strengthen this role in Jordan, four newspapers were searched and 1 145 articles between 2011 and 2015 were coded for mention of MPOWER topics and for tone of coverage [neutral, pro-, or anti-tobacco control]. Monthly counts, mention of tobacco control topics and the tones were examined. The monthly count of tobacco control-related news items showed an upward trend with an average monthly growth of 16%. Peaks in coverage were observed in synchrony with national tobacco control developments. 'Warn' was the topic most frequently mentioned [46%]. 'Protect' was the only topic that showed a statistically significant upward trend over time. A pro-tobacco control tone was more prevalent than an anti-tobacco control or neutral tone. Thus, efforts are needed to enhance the newsworthiness of certain topics, boost influence on decision-makers and pre-empt industry interference

ABSTRACT

Isomyia paurogonita Fang & Fan, 1986 (Diptera: Calliphoridae), a rare species of the subfamily Rhiniinae (tribe Cosminini) was recorded for the first time in Malaysia. We collected one male and two females during a field trip conducted at Genting Highland, Pahang, peninsular Malaysia in May 2011. A 3-day old cow liver was offered as attractant and dipterans collected were transferred to the laboratory for specimens processing and identification. The adults of I. paurogonita were attracted to the odour and then captured by using a sweep net. Isomyia paurogonita was also recorded from two other localities in Peninsular and Malaysian Borneo, namely Gombak Utara, Selangor and Sibu, Sarawak.

ABSTRACT

Harter's Self-Perception Profile for children [SPPC] is a self-reporting inventory for ascertaining children's perception of themselves in various specific domains of their life, as well as their sense of global selfworth. A few studies have examined the psychometric properties of this instrument in the Western setting, but none have investigated this in an Arabic culture. Patients and Method: Psychometric properties of the SPPC were examined, using a sample of 100 schoolchildren aged 8 to 16 years in the United Arab Emirates. The internal consistency reliability was found to be excellent with Chronbach's alpha, ranging from 0.86 to 0.92. Significant age and gender differences were found with the internal consistency reliability scores, being higher in children aged 13 to 16 years [0.88 to 0.93] when compared to younger children, especially boys aged 8 to 12 years [0.54 to 0.66], suggesting a need to exercise caution while using this scale in young boys in this culture. Behavioral conduct subscale was found to have the highest reliability score and the strongest correlation to global self-worth [r=0.54] for both younger and older children in our sample. This is in contrast to findings from similar studies carried out on American and Dutch samples, where this subscale was found to have the lowest reliability score and the weakest correlation with one's global self-worth. The findings indicate that the SPPC is a reliable and internally valid instrument for use in the Arab culture
