ABSTRACT

Adrenomedullin [ADM] is a novel and potent vasodilator peptide with a partial structural homology to calcitonin gene related peptide [CGRP]. This study was carried out on 18 albino rats divided into three equal groups [n=6]. Group I: sham operated normal rats; group II subtotally nephrectomized [SN X] rats sacrificed four' weeks postoperatively Group III SNX rats sacrificed eight weeks postoperatively. All these groups were studied for the following parameters, blood urea, plasma nitrite, plasma and tissue adrenomedullin concentrations. This study revealed a significant elevation in plasma urea level in groups II and III compared to group I also groups II and III showed a significant rise in both plasma and kidney tissue adrenomedullin levels while plasma and urinary levels of nitrites showed significant decrease as compared to controls

ABSTRACT

Thirty patients with age range from 25 to 50 years participated in this study and were divided into two groups. The study group included 15 hypertensive patients receiving nifedipine and physical training program. The control group included 15 hypertensive patients receiving nifedipine only. At the beginning of the study, the following parameters were measured before any intervention for both groups: Heart rate, systolic, diastolic blood pressure [by sphygmomanometer] and end systolic, end diastolic dimensions, volumes, interventricular septal thickness,% fractional shortening and early filling/atrial contractility ratio [by echocardiography]. Each patient of the study group performed ergometric exercise program for eight weeks three times per week. At the end of 8th week, another measurement of the previous parameters was done. The analysis of data revealed that physical training intervention caused a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, insignificant decrease in heart rate, insignificant difference in E/A ratio, insignificant difference in end systolic dimension and volume, insignificant difference in end diastolic dimension and a significant difference in interventricular septum,% fractional shortening and end diastolic volume in the study group; while the patients of the control group showed a decrease in the level of elevated blood pressure only

ABSTRACT

This study comprised 25 elder male subjects with ages ranged from 50 to 70 years. None of the subjects had a history of bone disease, renal, liver or endocranial disorders, cardiac affection or intake of any drugs that might effect bone metabolism. The subjects were divided randomly into two groups: Group I [study group] comprised 15 subjects participated in back exercise program, three sessions per week during eight months and group II served as a control group comprising ten subjects who were asked to maintain their current life style. An osteo CT was used for the quantitative assessment of bone mass in the vertebral bodies of the lumbar spines. The results showed that there is a significant increase in the standard value of bone mass after eight months of training exercise in group I, while in group II there was no significant decrease. So, it was concluded that a training program for eight months might be therapeutically effective in the prevention of bone loss in the lumbar spine in old age

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effect of physical training either breathing exercise or treadmill exercise on the cardiac axis in elders. Sixty elder subjects participated in this study and were divided into two groups: Group I for performance of breathing exercise program and group II for performance of treadmill exercise program. Their ages ranged between 65 and 75 years. Thorough medical and physical examinations were done for each participant before starting the training and a written informed consent was obtained from each subject. The results showed that breathing exercise program lead to a significant deviation of the cardiac axis to right, while the treadmill exercise lead to insignificant deviation of the axis to the left

ABSTRACT

The effect of both arm and leg cycling on the level of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide in males was studied. This study included ten normal subjects with age ranged 19-35 years. The results showed significant rise of atrial natriuretic peptide after both arm and leg cycling. This rise was significantly higher with arm cycling than with leg cycling. The study concluded that arm and leg cycling increased the atrial natriuretic peptide level that might be beneficial in acute and chronic diseases that need natriuresis

ABSTRACT

Twenty two infants with direct- reacting hyperbilirubinemia [DRHB] were investigated to verify the cause of jaundice with prime interest of identifying those with biliary atresia [BA]. Duodenal aspirate was subjected to thin layer chromatography [TLC]. The results were compared to other means of investigations viz. ultrasonography, aspiration needle liver biopsy and laparoscopy
