ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to develop and test a structural model on smoking cessation intention in technical high school men. The conceptual model was based on the theory of reasoned action and health promotion model. METHODS: From May 29 to April 13, 2015, 413 technical high school students who smoked completed a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed to calculate the direct and indirect effects of factors affecting smoking cessation intention. The SPSS WIN 20.0 and AMOS 21.0 programs were used. RESULTS: The hypothetical model was a good fit for the data. The model fit indices were χ²/df=2.36, GFI=.95, AGFI=.92, NFI=0.97, and RMSEA=.05. Self-esteem had direct and indirect effects on smoking cessation intention. Attitude, subjective norm, and self-efficacy had direct effects on smoking cessation intention. Smoking knowledge and environmental factor had indirect effects on smoking cessation intention. This model explained 87.0% of the variance in smoking cessation intention. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that technical high school students' intention to stop smoking can be improved through an increase in self-esteem, negative environmental factors, attitude toward smoking cessation, subjective norm about smoking cessation, and self-efficacy for smoking cessation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify factors based on the theory of planned behavior that predict smoking cessation in elderly smokers following a stroke. METHOD: Between March and May 2013, data related to intention, attitude toward the behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, were collected through questionnaire from 223 elders who smoked and who had a stroke. Data analysis was performed using PASW (SPSS) 18.0 program, and included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise liner regression analysis. RESULTS: Results showed a positive correlation between intention and attitude toward the behavior (r=.494, p<.001), subjective norm (r=.390, p<.001), and perceived behavioral control (r=.189, p=.005). These variables such as perceived behavior control, subjective norm, number of cigarettes per day, and usefulness of quitting smoking explained 50% of intention to quit smoking. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that there is a need to develop smoking cessation nursing strategies for elderly smokers following a stroke in order to provide effective counseling on subjective norm and perceived behavioral control.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to explore clinical competence and factors related to competence in nursing students. METHODS: Data were collected using structured questionnaires from 210 students in three different schools located in D, B and P metropolitan cities, Korea. Data were using PASW (SPSS) 18.0 program, and included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlations coefficients, and multiple regression analyses. RESULTS: There were positive correlations between clinical competence and ego-resilience (r=.40. p<.001), critical thinking dispositions (r=.58, p<.001), and self-leadership (r=.14, p=.043). Variables such as critical thinking dispositions, ego-resilience, satisfaction with clinical practice education, health status and academic performance explained 48% of variance in clinical competence. CONCLUSION: According to the above results, a specific education program for clinical competence of student nurses is needed to increase critical thinking dispositions, ego-resilience, satisfaction with clinical practice education, health status and academic performance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to examine sexual autonomy of college students. METHOD: Between October 2012 and November 2012, data related to self-efficacy, health knowledge, attitude to sex, and sexual autonomy orientation, were collected by questionnaire from 232 students. The data analysis was performed using PASW (SPSS) 18.0 program, and included t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise liner regression analysis. RESULTS: The results showed a positive correlation between self-efficacy and sexual autonomy (r=.56, p<.001), sexual health knowledge (r=.50, p<.001), and attitude to sex (r=.29, p=.001). These 4 variables accounted for 48.7% of the variance in sexual autonomy among college students. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that there is a need to develop mental health nursing strategies for college students in order to provide effective counseling on sexuality and sexual health matters.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the factors influencing customer orientation of nurses. METHOD: The participants were 505 nurses who were working in 13 hospitals. Data were collected with structured questionnaires in Feb., 2012, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one way- ANOVA, Scheffe test, correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression with PASW (SPSS) 18.0 program. RESULT: The average score for internal marketing was 3.07 points, for job satisfaction, 3.06 points, for organizational commitment, 3.25 points, and for customer orientation, 3.53 points. Customer orientation was positively correlated with internal marketing, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The significant predictors of customer orientation were professionalism, interaction with job satisfaction, affective commitment, continuous commitment to organizational commitment and length of career. These variables had an explanatory power of 45.2%. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest that internal marketing, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment should be reinforced to improve the customer orientation of nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare internal marketing, job satisfaction and customer orientation between nurses in small-medium hospitals and nurses in general hospitals. METHOD: The participants were 470 nurses were working in 8 small-medium hospitals and 5 general hospitals. Data were collected with structured questionnaires in July, 2010, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi2-test, MANCOVA, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test with PASW (SPSS) 18.0 program. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between small-medium hospital nurses and general hospital nurses in internal marketing and customer orientation. But nurses in small-medium hospitals had higher levels of job satisfaction than general hospital nurses. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate the necessity of developing programs that will help to improve job satisfaction in nurses.
