ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the effect of uncemented total hip arthroplasty(THA) on treatment of traumatic arthritis caused by intramedullary nailing interfixation of intertrochanteric fractures.@*METHODS@#Total of 22 patients treated with THA due to traumatic arthritis caused by intramedullary nailing interfixation of intertrochanteric fractures from January 2012 to January 2017 were studied retrospectively, including 10 males and 12 females with a mean age of (72.5±9.8) years old ranging from 61 to 84 years old. Initial internal fixation method:14 patients were treated with Gamma nails and 8 patients were treated wit PFNA.The time from internal fixation surgery to THA was 10 to 68 months with an average of (32.2±21.3) months.Harris scores of the hip joint before and after surgery were compared, and the position of the prosthesis through postoperative imaging at 3, 6, 12 months and the last follow-up were evaluated.@*RESULTS@#One patient was died due to heart failure 1 year after operation. Two patients was died to advanced tumor 2 years after operation. The other 19 patients were followed up for 36 to 64 months with an average of (48.5±11.9) months. At final follow up, 14 patients regained the ability to walk independently, 4 patients needed support of a cane, 1 patient needed assistance of a walker. No serious complications such as joint dislocation, periprosthetic fracture and deep venous thrombosis occurred during follow-up. There were no signs of loosening and subsidence of the prosthesis at the final follow-up. Mean Harris hip score increased from (29.2±12.9) points preoperatively to (74.2±11.2) points at the final follow up(P<0.05);the score was excellent in 9 patients, good in 7 and fair in 3.@*CONCLUSION@#Uncemented total hip arthroplasty for traumatic arthritis after intramedullary nail fixation of femoral intertrochanteric fracture can significantly improve hip function and effectively avoid bone cement implantation syndrome. The medium-term effect is satisfactory.

ABSTRACT

Methods@#In this study, 267 matched pairs of AIS and controls were recruited. The participants underwent EMG measurements at their first presentation and did not receive any treatment for 6 months at which point they underwent EMG and radiographs. Early curve progression was defined as >5° in Cobb angle at 6 months. The root mean square of the EMG (rms-EMG) signal was recorded with the participants in sitting and back extension. The rms-EMG ratio at the upper end vertebrae, apical vertebrae (AV), and lower end vertebrae (LEV) of the major curve was calculated. @*Results@#The rms-EMG ratio in the scoliosis cohort was high compared with that in the controls (sitting: 1.2±0.3 vs. 1.0±0.1, p<0.01; back extension: 1.1±0.2 vs. 1.0±0.1, p<0.01). An AV rms-EMG ratio in back extension, with a cutoff threshold of ≥1.5 in the major thoracic curve and ≥1.3 in the major lumbar curve, was a risk factor for early curve progression after 6 months without treatment (odds ratio, 4.1; 95% confidence interval, 2.8–5.9; p<0.01). Increases in side deviation (SD) (distance between the AV and the central sacral line) were related to a higher rms-EMG ratio in LEV of the major thoracic curve (baseline: rs=0.2, p=0.03; 6 months: rs=0.3, p<0.01). @*Conclusions@#An EMG discrepancy was detected in the scoliosis cohort, which was related to increases in SD in the major thoracic curve. The AV rms-EMG ratio in back extension was correlated with curve progression after 6 months of no treatment.

ABSTRACT

At present, the prevention and control of new coronavirus has entered a critical period. However, the use of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assays for the detection of viral nucleic acid, as a crucial diagnostic approach, has been doubted in clinical practice. Herein, we have reviewed the current status of epidemic prevention and control, latest development of detection technologies, disease characteristics, clinical sampling and transport. We have also discussed the factors that may affect the performance of viral nucleic acid detection, and suggested some effective methods to improve the detection performance of the assays.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hemiarthroplasty is widely recommended for the treatment of femoral neck fractures in elderly patients, but it is controversial in choosing cemented or cementless fixation types. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of cemented hemiarthroplasty with cementless hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of femoral neck fractures in elderly and to provide a scientific basis for the selection of clinical prosthesis. METHODS: 167 elderly patients with femoral neck fractures undergoing hemiarthroplasty in the Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from March 2013 to March 2015 were enrolled in this study. According to the type of prosthesis, patients were divided into cementless group (n=81) and cemented group (n=86). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, hemoglobin levels 1 day after surgery, reoperation rate, mortality and complications at 1 year after surgery were compared. After surgery, clinical function of hip joint was assessed by Harris scoring system. The pain was evaluated by Visual Analogue Scale. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) All patients were followed up for ≥ 12 months. (2) The operation time in the cementless group was significantly shorter than that in the cemented group (P < 0.01). (3) There was no significant difference in the intraoperative blood loss and hemoglobin levels at postoperative 1 day (P > 0.05). (4) There were no significant differences in Harris hip scores and Visual Analogue Scale score at various time points between both groups (P > 0.05). (5) The incidence of thigh pain in cementless group was slightly higher than that in cemented group at 1 week, 1 and 6 months after operation, but the differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Two patients died from myocardial infarct in the cementless group, and one patient died from pulmonary infection in the cemented group. The mortality was not significantly different at postoperative 1 year between the two groups (P > 0.05). No complications, such as prosthesis loosening and sinking, periprosthetic fracture, and periprosthetic infection, which needed to be refurbished, occurred in both groups. (6) Our findings suggest that both cemented and cementless hemiarthroplasties can obtain satisfactory effect in the treatment of femoral neck fractures in the elderly patients. Cementless hemiarthroplasty can significantly shorten operation time.

ABSTRACT

As more and more studies suggest that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is closely related to male hypogonadism, people begin to pay more attention to the role of testosterone in the development of T2DM and the effect and safety of testosterone supplementary therapy. There is some controversy in randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses about the effects of testosterone supplementation on the blood glucose level, androgen deficiency symptoms, and cardiovascular diseases. This review focuses on the diagnosis of hypogonadism in T2DM males, differences in the therapeutic effects and safety of testosterone replacement among different studies, and rational use of testosterone supplementation for T2DM patients.

ABSTRACT

We report a rare case of a multiple sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum with postoperative lung and brain metastases. The patient underwent jejunum segmental resection for intussusception and gastrointestinal bleeding. Multiple metastasis ofbrain and lung occurred 4 months after the operation, and the patient died for multiple organ failure 8 months after the surgery. Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma was difficult to diagnose at an early stage, and the diagnosis relies on optical microscopic and immunohistochemical observations. Currently no guidelinesare established for treatment for sarcomatoid carcinoma of the jejunum, and surgical resection remains the optimal therapeutic approach. Previous reports documented a poor prognosis of the patients with a median survival time of 5.5 months (0.36-36months), and the primary causes of death were tumor recurrence and metastasis. Ki-67 as a potential prognostic marker and the value of PD-L1-targeted immunotherapy for the treatment await further investigation.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>Objective</b>To compare the level of testosterone between type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and healthy controls and to investigate the status of hypogonadism and the influence of hypopgonadism on the quality of life.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>We collected serum total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and other clinical data from 166 T2DM patients aged over 30 years and 186 age-matched healthy controls. We investigated the quality of life (QoL) of the two groups of subjects using the questionnaires of Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males (ADAM), Aging Male Symptoms (AMS), 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and Special Quality of Life for Diabetes Mellitus (DSQL).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The level of calculated FT (cFT) was remarkably lower in the T2DM patients than in the healthy controls (P<0.05), but no statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in the levels of TT, bio-available testosterone (Bio-T), and SHBG. The T2DM males with hypogonadism showed significant differences from those without in age, height, systolic blood pressure, and creatinine (P<0.05). Based on the criteria of cFT <0.3 nmol/L and AMS score ≥27, the incidence rate of hypogonadism was 51.81% in the T2DM patients, 31.58% in the 30-39 yr group, 32.50% in the 40-49 yr group, 50% in the 50-59 yr group, 69.23% in the 60-69 yr group, and 77.27% in the ≥70 yr group, elevated by 77.4% with the increase of 10 years of age (OR = 1.774, P<0.001). The AMS score was significantly correlated with the scores of DSQL (r = 0.557, P<0.001) and SF-36 (r = -0.739, P<0.001) in the T2DM patients.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>T2DM patients have lower levels of cFT than healthy men, accompanied with a higher incidence of hypogonadism. Age is a main risk factor of hypogonadism. Severer testosterone deficiency symptoms are associated with lower scores of QoL in T2DM males.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore clinical outcomes of percutaneous short segment pedical screw fixation with bone cement augmentation in treating single level thoracolumbar osteoporotic fracture.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From January 2009 to January 2013, 48 single level thoracolumbar osteoporotic fracture patients without neurological symptoms were treated with percutaneous short segment pedicle screw fixation with bone cement augmentation. Among them, including 22 males and 26 females aged from 55 to 72 years old with an average of 62.2 years old. The time from injury to operation varied from 8 h to 9 d(mean 4.5 d). According to Denis fracture classification, 35 cases were compression fractures and 13 cases were burst fractures. Nine vertebrae located on T₁₁, 15 vertebrae on T₁₂, 14 vertebrae on L₁, 7 vertebrae on L₂, and ₃ vertebrae on L₃. Anterior vertebral body height, sagittal Cobb angle, sagittal index(SI), failure of internal fixation and recurrence of kyphosis were observed before and after operation.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All patients were followed up from 24 to 48 months with an average of 32.5 months. Operative time ranged from 60 to 140 min with an average of 85 min;blood loss ranged from 50 to 100 ml with an average of 75 ml. Before operation, at 3 d and 1 year after operation, anterior vertebral body height respectively was (56.4±2.6)%, (91.2±1.6)% and (86.9±3.2)%; sagittal Cobb angle respectively was(26.6±3.2)°, (6.2±1.0)° and (6.8±1.5)°; SI respectively was(51.6±4.2)%, (90.2±5.9)% and (88.7±4.2)%; VAS respectively was(7.6±1.2), (2.8±1.9), (1.1±0.4) points. There were significant differences above items between before operation and at 3 d after operation, while no significance between 1 year and 3 d after operation. No neurologic damage, internal fixation failure and recurrence of kyphosis occurred.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Percutaneous short segment pedicle screw fixation with bone cement augmentation in treating single level thoracolumbar osteoporotic fracture has advantages of less trauma, and could effectively restore normal physiological load transmission of spinal, avoid failure of internal fixation and recurrence of kyphosis.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of Yiqi Huoxue Tongyang Xiezhuo Recipe (YHTXR, capable of supplementing qi, activating blood, warming yang, and discharge turbidity) in treating coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAHD). and chronic heart failure (CHF) with carotid plaque patients, and to explore new ways of Chinese medicine (CM).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Totally 69 CAHD-CHF patients of qi deficiency phlegm stasis syndrome (QDPSS) with carotid plaque were recruited in this study using parallel cohort method. They were assigned to the treatment group (35 cases) and the control group (34 cases). Patients in the control group received routine treatment of Western medicine, while those in the treatment group were additionally treated with YHTXR (twice daily). The therapeutic course for all was three months. Cardiac function levels, echocardiography, carotid plaque, blood lipids and safety indicators were observed before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After treatment the improvement of cardiac function levels was better in the treatment group than in the control group (P < 0.05). Decreased LDL-C levels were higher in the treatment group than in the control group (P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), LDL-C, TC, TG in the treatment group between before and after treatment (P < 0.05). LDL-C and TG also decreased in the control group after treatment (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the left ventricular ejection fraction, carotid IMT, or TC in the control group between before and after treatment (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in stroke volume, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, the area of carotid artery plaque, or HDL-C in the two groups between before and after treatment (P > 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>YHTXR could effectively improve cardiac functions of CAHD-CHF patients of QDPSS with carotid plaque, reduce blood lipids and IMT. It had no significant adverse reactions for elderly patients in short term.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the consciousness of health emergency and the abilities on self- and mutual medical aids among the public at the community level, as well as the community responses on health-related emergencies and other factors.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Random equidistant sampling method was used to extract 617 households before choosing a family member sampled by Kish Grid method. All the members were investigated face to face on a questionnaire-"Health emergency and related ability regarding self and mutual medical aids of the residents". Data were entered into computer database by using software Epi Data 3.1 and were analyzed by SPSS 21.0.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Among the 617 households under survey, 47.84% of the public had general awareness on health-related emergencies. Regarding the following items as:prevention and isolation strategies of infectious disease, on safely procedures of earthquake and fires, on prevention of food poisoning, on prevention and first aid of emerging infectious diseases etc., the rates of awareness were 65.04%, 62.92%, 43.62% and 18.79% respectively. Proportions of households which had the first aid supplies were:first aid medicine box as 56.08%; fire extinguisher as 43.60%; spare water and food as 39.40%; having facilities as ropes, whistles and smoke masks for escape were all less than 15%. Rates of awareness on the following items as: correct use of gas switch as 81.52%, knowing the location of the circuit with gear and the fire hydrant as 74.39% and 35.98% , respectively. The correct disposal rates of the residents on the following items were:electric shock and falls (89.63%), patients of infectious diseases (83.31%), gas poisoning (82.98%), suspected symptoms on infectious diseases(82.66%), explosion and burns (66.78%), scald (62.72%)and sprain (57.05%). Scores on the related abilities were as follows: emergency(7.65, out of 10 points), escape(3.55, out of 5 points), self- and mutual medical aids (10.71, out of 16 points). Proportions of having learned and applied of first aid techniques among residents on the following items were:artificial breathing, chest compressions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation were all less than 10%. Level of knowing the first aid techniques was correlated with age and culture of the residents (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Both consciousness on health emergency and the abilities on self- and mutual medical aids were low among the community public, suggesting that both the government and pubic should pay more attention to the role of the abilities on self- and mutual medical aids.</p>

ABSTRACT

Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an antiangiogenic factor which is effective in tumour inhibition in a variety of tumours and has not yet been studied in bladder tumour before.In this study the expression of PEDF,interleukin-1 α (IL-1α) and -8 (IL-8) in bladder tumours was investigated.Immunohistochemistry was performed on 64 bladder tumour and 23 normal uroepithelium samples.Expression change of the factors was compared with clinicopathological parameters.Correlations between PEDF,IL-1α and IL-8 were analyzed.None of the factors was in relation to gender,tumour occurrence,and size or onset pattem.PEDF (P=0.014) and IL-1α (P=0.049) expression was down-regulated with grade progression.PEDF expression was lower in normal uroepithelium than in papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP) (P=0.000) and carcinoma (P=0.009) whilst IL-1α (P=0.000 and P=0.000 respectively) and IL-8 (P=0.000 and P=0.023 respectively) expression was higher in the same grouping.PEDF expression had a negative correlation with IL-8 in PUNLMP (P=0.049,r=-0.578) as well as in tumour grouping (P=0.033,r=-0.276).Deranged expressional change of PEDF,IL-1 α and IL-8 could be in relation to loss of differentiation from normal uroepithelium to papillary lesion and eventually to carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the efficacy of hBMP-4 gene modified tissue engineered bone graft in the enhancement of rabbit spinal fusion and find an ideal kind of substitute for the autograft bone.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Rabbit BMSCs were cultured and transfected with AAV-hBMP-4 using different MOI value. The optimal MOI value were determined by observing cell's morphology change. BMSCs were then transfected with AAV-hBMP4 and AAV-EGFP respectively, following which the transfected cells were evenly suspended in a collagen sponge I, and implanted to either side of the L5,6 intertransverse spaces posterolateral in the New Zealand rabbits to induce spinal fusion. Fourteen rabbits were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1: AAV-hBMP-4 transfected BMSCs in the right side (hBMP-4 side) and autograft bone in the left side. Group 2: AAV-hBMP-4 transfected BMSCs in the right side (hBMP-4 side) and AAV-EGFP transfected BMSCs in the left side (EGFP side). Radiographs and three-dimensional CT of the spine, manual palpation, gross and histological examination of the fusion masses for all the animals were performed subsequent to animals having been sacrificed at 12 weeks after surgery.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Evaluation has been taken in 12 New Zealand rabbits delivered into 2 groups which meet the criterion after operation. Eleven in 12 implemented sides involved hBMP-4 achieved bony fusion, to which 5 in 6 autografted sides was similar. But only 2 in 6 sides in EGFP-group achieved bony fusion meanwhile. Three-dimensional CT scan and palpation also evidenced the results. Bone formation was observed obviously on specimen both in hBMP4 sides and autografted ones. EGFP-group also got bony integration, but the quantity was small.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Tissue-engineered bone graft constructed from application of hBMP4 is a fine substitute for autograft. Effective enhancement of bony integration in spinal fusion surgery has been evidenced in vivo.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) using balloon expander has been proved to be effective in the treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures. Recently, Sky-bone expander, an alternative bone expander for PKP has been developed. The purpose of this study was to show our preliminary clinical outcomes of PKP with Sky-bone expander.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>PKP with Sky-bone expander was performed in 25 patients (30 vertebrae). The operation time, bleeding volume, cement volume injected were recorded. The pain and functional activities of the patients before and after the operation were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The cement distribution in the vertebrae, vertebral height restoration, and kyphosis correction after the procedure were evaluated by radiography. The pre- and post-operative absolute values of the vertebral height and kyphotic angle were compared by paired-sample t test. All the patients were followed up by telephone or clinic consulting after being discharged from our hospital.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The procedure was performed successfully in all the patients. Bipedicular injection was used in 2 of the patients, and unipedicular injection was made in the others. The operation time ranged from 25 to 120 minutes (45 minutes per vertebra on average). The average bleeding volume was about 20 ml. Polymethylmethacrylate 1.5-5.0 ml (mean, (3.15+/-0.78) ml) was injected through each pedicle into all the patients except one, who received calcium sulphate 3.5 ml instead. The patients were followed up for 12-15 months (13.5 months on average). The mean visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Oswestry Disability Index, anterior, midline, and posterior vertebral height, and kyphotic angle of the patients were improved significantly at the end of the follow-up compared with those before the operation. (2.5+/-1.3, 35.1%, (20.94+/-6.15) mm, (20.26+/-4.59) mm, (26.72+/-3.49) mm, and 8.2 degrees vs. 8.5+/-1.9, 61.2%, (19.11+/-6.72) mm, (15.88+/-5.73) mm, (25.78+/-3.67) mm, and 17.3 degrees; all P<0.05). The cement distribution with unipedicular injection was mostly limited within the injection site in the vertebral body. Cement extravasation was seen at ten levels (33.3%).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>PKP with Sky-bone expander is an effective and relatively safe alternative to the PKP using balloon expander. It can relieve pain, improve physical function, and restore the height of the collapsed vertebrae, but the cement extravasation is unsolved.</p>

Objective To determine the prevalence and characteristics of the del(GJB6-D13S1830) in Connexin30(Cx30) gene in children with prelingual deafness.Methods Forty-six prelingual deaf children and 30 children with normal comprehension were obtained,and the del(GJB6-D13S1830)in the Cx30 gene were screened by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) in 2 groups.Results Three cases of 46 deaf children were found to have heterozygous del(GJB6-D13S1830) in Cx30 gene.The rest deaf children and the normal controls did not harbor this deletion.Conclusion The heterozygous del(GJB6-D13S1830) in Cx30 gene is one of causes of prelingual deafness.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the clinical results of balloon percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) and "Sky-bone expander" PKP.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From October 2004 to February 2006, 25 cases (57 vertebrae) balloon PKP and 24 cases (29 vertebrae) "Sky-bone expander" PKP procedures were performed. The operation time, bleeding volume, cement injected volume were recorded during operation. The patients' pain relief and functional activities recovery were evaluated after operation. The distribution of the cement and the restoration of vertebral height were also observed post-operation. All these patients were followed-up by telephone or clinic consults after discharged.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All cases were successfully experienced procedures. There are no significant differences in operative time, bleeding volume and cost of every vertebrae in these two group (P > 0.05). The balloon group had larger cement injected volume per pedicle than Sky group (4.27 +/- 1.08) ml vs. (3.15 +/- 0.78) ml (P < 0.05). The VAS and ODI scoring of these two groups were both decreased significantly after operation. The vertebral height were restored in both two groups with anterior height and midline height restored significantly in balloon group and midline height restored significantly in Sky group. The cement distribution of "Sky-bone expander" PKP with unipediclar injection mostly limited in the injective side of the vertebral body, but most of the balloon PKP vertebrae with unipediclar injection can be seen a cross-midline cement distribution in the anterior-posterior position X ray film.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Both balloon PKP and "Sky-bone expander" PKP are efficacious and safety in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures. "Sky-bone expander" PKP is more suitable for single level compressive fracture while balloon PKP is especially suitable for multiple level compressive fractures.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effects of adeno-associated virus-enhanced green fluorescent protein (AAV-EGFP)on the biologic behavior of rabbit's bone marrow stromal cells(BMSCs)by means of a simple method of culturing and osteogenic induction in vitro so as to find an ideal viral vector and cell tracing mark for tissue en- gineering.Methods Total bone marrow culture was conducted to obtain rabbit BMSCs which were then induced in the osteogenic direction.The morphology of the cells was observed continuously,and their surface antigen and ossification were detected by alkali phosphatase stain and Von Kossa stain.On the basis of the above results, AAV-EGFP was transfected into the induced cells.The morphologic changes of the cells,the expression time and intensity of fluorescent light were observed.The transfection efficiency was detected to find the best multiplicity of infection(MOI)value.The cell growth curves were drawn to evaluate the biologic effects of AAV-EGFP on the cyto-activity.Results The morphology and purity of the rabbit BMSCs obtained were good.The ossification of the cells was significant after osteogenic induction.The best MOI value was found to be 1?10~5.The expression intensity of fluorescent light was strong with the expression time more than eight weeks so that the fluorescent light could be observed after cell generations.The transfection efficiency of AAV was high without significant biologic effects on the cyto-activity.Conclusions The total bone marrow culture and in vitro cell induction can satisfy the requirements for seeding cells in tissue engineering.AAV is an ideal viral vector for tissue engineering.Transfection of AAV-EGFP to cells could be an ideal method for cell tracing mark.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To determine the distribution of HLA-B alleles in the Chinese Yi ethnic group and its association with HIV infection.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred and six unrelated healthy HIV negative and 73 HIV positive Chinese Yi ethnic individuals were typed by PCR-SSP.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The frequency of alleles B*07, Bx 35, and B*46 were increased in HIV-1-positive subjects, whereas the alleles B*55, B*44 and B*78 were absent in the HIV-infected persons studied. The B*46 allele was present in a significantly higher gene frequency among HIV-1-positive individuals (P=0.02, OR=3.32, 95% CI=1.13-9.78) compared with control subjects.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>HLA-B*46 may be associated with its susceptibility to HIV-1 infections.</p>

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the effect of fructose-1, 6-diphosphate (FDP) on adriamycin (ADM) induced myocardial tyrosine nitration in rats. METHODS: Rats were treated with ADM by intraperitoneal injection (2.50 mg·kg-1 body weight at six times every other day), and then the ADM treated rats were intervened by FDP on different dosages by intraperitoneal injection (at twenty-one times every other day). TBA method, nitrate reductase method and pyrogallol autoxidation method were used to determine the content of lipid peroxide (LPO) and nitric oxide (NO), the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) of myocardium, respectively. The nitrotyrosine (NT) and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA of myocardium was detected by immunohistochemical method and in situ hybridization. The expression level of iNOS mRNA and level of NT in myocardium was semi-quantitatively analyzed. RESULTS: FDP (300, 600, 1 200 mg·kg-1) significantly reduced the content of LPO and NO in myocardium, the expression level of iNOS mRNA and level of NT in myocardium, and significantly increased the activity of SOD in myocardium, when ADM treated rats were intervened by FDP (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: FDP can inhibit myocardial tyrosine nitration induced by ADM, and thereby reduce injury of cardiotoxicity induced by ADM. The mechanism may be relate to FDP inhibit expression of iNOS mRNA in myocardium induced by ADM, reduce to produce NO in myocardium, and it protect the activity of SOD in myocardium, enhance capability of scavenge superoxide anion in myocardiurn, thereby reducing to produce peroxynitrite in myocardium.
