ABSTRACT

Oxidative Modification of Blood Serum Proteins due to free radical stress has been studies in 65 patients Diabetes Mellitus [DM] and Myocardial Infarction [MI]. It has been shown that both DM and MI patients have increased level of Oxidatively Modified Human Serum Proteins [OMHSP] as compared to healthy persons. Diabetic patients had a significantly higher level and slower dynamic of OMHSP that non-diabetic patients did during 14 days after the onset of Acute MI. The data suggest that oxidative modification of proteins may be a possible factor contributing to the poorer outcome of MI in diabetic patients. The study was conducted in Cardiology and Medical units of Allama Iqbal Medical College /Jinnah Hospital Lahore during 2001-2002

ABSTRACT

We describe two cases of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting as scalp tumour. In the first case the scalp mass was painful and tender while the second case presented with painless scalp mass. Both cases showed evidence of cranial vault destruction with involvement of dura. Histology showed features of typical B-cell, large cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma without any systemic involvement. We are reporting these cases because of its rare occurrence and a review of pertinent literature follows

ABSTRACT

Thyroglossal cyst rarely presents with carcinoma formation in the remnants of the thyroid gland. We report a 40 year old male with papillary thyroid carcinoma formation in a thyroglossal cyst. The patient underwent surgical intervention for the cyst. His pathology was positive for thyroid carcinoma and he underwent complete thyroidectomy with postoperative radioactive iodine treatment. His follow up revealed no evidence of recurrence

ABSTRACT

Oxidative Modification of Blood Proteins [OMBP] has been studied in 65 patients with Diabetes. Mellitus [DM] and Myocardial Infarction [MI]. It has been shown that both DM and MI patients have increased levels of OMBP as compared to healthy persons. Diabetic patients had significantly higher levels and slower dynamics of OMBP than non-diabetic patients did during 14 days after onset of Acute MI. These data suggest that Oxidative Modification of proteins is a possible factor contributing to the poorer outcome of MI in diabetic patients

ABSTRACT

The disturbance in the Geomagnetic Pole [GMP] may play a signal of change in Bioadaptive Mechanism leading to Ischemic Heart Disease [IHD]. The data of GMP from The Institute of Geophysics, Gottingen, Germany of 1097 days [1989-1992] were analysed and compared to the hospital admissions, 2635 patients with acute Myocardial Infarction [MI] in this period, in the Crimea Medical Institute, Cardiac Gentre, Simferopol-333006, Ukraine: a] The Geomagnetic Pole Disturbed Day [GMPDD] were 243 [22.2%] during which 568 patients [21.6% of the total patients with MI] were admitted. B] The unfavourable days [UFD, disturbed day, a day before and a day after the disturbed day] were 541 [49.3%] by the method of overlapping period, during which 1318 patients [50% of the total patients with MI] were admitted. It is the highest% age of admission as compared to the rest of the days. Hence, it is very wise to think that disturbance in GMP, may have been expressed as the aggravation of IHD. c] The number Sudden Geomagnetic Strom Days [SGSD] were 102 [9.3%] during which 257 patients [9.8%] were admitted

ABSTRACT

From January 1986 to December 1995, 20 cases of adrenal tumours were seen at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation. They included cases of adrenal carcinoma [2], bilateral adenoma [4], unilateral adrenal adenoma [6], unilateral phaeochromocytoma [7] and bilateral phaeochromoctyoma [1]. Four cases presented with Cushing's syndrome, two with Conn's syndrome and one with adrenocortical syndrome. There were 11 female and 9 males in this series. Majority [16] of cases were seen between 11 to 30 years of age. Adrenal tumours are mostly symptomatic and functioning, incidental tumours are increasing due to widespread use of ultrasound and CT scan. Adrenalectomy provides a satis factory cure

ABSTRACT

The analysis of 138 myocardial infarction [MI] cases has been carried out for the period of 366 days. The results were compared with prognostic and truly disturbed days when the geomagnetic pole was elevated [the data of Institute of Geophysics in Gottingen, Federal Republic of Germany were used]. Hemodynamic parameters and psychological status of the patients with MI were determined according to MMPI test. It was noted that greater number of persons fell ill when prognostic and truly disturbed days coincided. No considerable increase in MI morbidity was found only in disturbed days. Certain specific psychological profile prevailed in patients who fell ill in coincided days, disturbed days and prognostic days known and unknown to the patients. It is proposed that the human organism becomes more sensitive to the geomagnetic factors when psychological and physical deadaptation occurs. This is also reflected by the destabilization of regulatory system of the organism

ABSTRACT

The effect of mixed use of coenzymes, antihypoxic preparations and cytochrome C was studied in 20 patients with dilated cariomyopathy [DCMP]. Positive effect of relieving cardilogic syndrome [arrhythmia and cardiac failure] was observed with the administration of cobamide [vit. B12], pyridoxal phosphate [vit. B6] and ATP in combination with exogenic cytochrome C. Cytochemical data of oxidation-reduction process in blood lymphocytes before and after treatment differed with positive dynamics. This showed the high metabolic effect of these coenzymes from B-vitamins and antihypoxic substances in the DCMP patients

ABSTRACT

The association of aetiological agents incriminated for bladder cancer are well recognized. They are divided into two groups, occupational and non-occupational. The commonest occupational agents are 2-naphlthylamine, benzidine, aminobiphenyl, dichlorobenzidine, orthodianisidine and orthotolidine. Recognized non-occupational agents include tobacco, recurrent chronic bladder infection/infestation, coffee and drugs. This study was conduced to evaluate these factors in patients with bladder cancer in our population. Of 250 cases studied, 203 were males and 47 females with a male to female ratio of 4.3:1. In 13.6% cases occupational factors were established with an average duration of exposure of 12 years. Majority [68%] of patients had smoking as the predominant non-occupational factor. In this group average cigarettes smoked per day was 23 with a range of 15 to 90. The duration of smoking ranged between 5 to 55 years with an average of 26 years. Sixty patients [24%] were neither smokers nor had any associated high risk occupation

ABSTRACT

Cytochemical analysis and bioenergetics of blood lymphocytes have been studied in 68 patients of Infectious Allergical Myocarditis [IAM] and 44 patients of Myocardiosclerosis [MC]. Regarding cellular metabolism, the activity of Glucose-6-PO4 Dehydrogenase [G-6-PD] [E.C. I.I.I.49] was found to be high according to the Nitrobluetetrazolium Reduction Test [I] due to the disturbance of NAD and NADP diaphorase [E.C.I.6.4.3]. The activity of L-glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase [E.C.I.1.1.8, 1.1.99.5] and cytochrome C content of the cells was found to be reduced. Thus, study of energy metabolism of blood lymphocytes provides an additional differential characteristics of inflammatory injuries of myocardium
