ABSTRACT

Twenty patients subjected to urinary surgery under fluothane oxygen were studied. Four blood samples were taken preoperatively, and immediate, 24 hrs and 48 hrs postoperatively [a, b, c, d]. ICD, LDH, ALP, GOT, and GPT showed a fair increase in b and a percentage increase of 155% for ICD, 142% for GPT, 112% for GOT, 43% for LDH and 6% for ALP. They returned back to normal level in d, i.e. a transient increase response pattern. Glucose was significantly increased while sodium and osmolality were significantly decreased in b, and they returned to normal in d. Urea, creatinine, K, Cl, HCO[3] and anion gap revealed a within normal change in all the samples. Therefore, we could conclude that 2% fluothane and surgery have a transient effect on liver enzymes as well as kidney function and or blood chemistry

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on 136 cases of heat stroke during Mecca pilgrimage of 1981. Clinical, radiological, ECG and laboratory studies including blood gases, acid base, electrolytes, enzymes, hepatic and renal functions and some hematological studies were done. Respiratory involvement was evidenced by the presence of disturbed rate or rhythm of breathing in all cases and the common finding of cyanosis [62%] X-ray chest for 82 cases revealed the presence of lobar or broncho-pneumonia in 31.4% and atelectasis of right upper lobe in two cases. Pulmonary edema was found in six cases. Hypoxemia was present in all measurements. Hypocapnia was present in the majority of cases [87.7%], while hypercapnia was found in three emphysematous and an obese patients. Serum electrolytes showed that sodium level was normal in 68.3%, low in 21.5% and high in 10.2%, while potassium level was low in 58%, none in 41.3% and high in only a case of acute renal failure [0.7%]. The multisystem involvement was evident. A relatively low mortality of 20% reflects the value of prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment

ABSTRACT

A quantitative correlation between the duration of muscular relaxation by alcuronium and the different serum protein fractions as well as age and sex was displayed in twenty patients of different nationalities who underwent surgical procedure under nitrous oxide and oxygen anaesthesia. A strong positive linear correlation was also found with total serum proteins, albumin and alpha 1 globulin and alcuronium duration of action in hoth males and females. A negative linear correlation could be established in males between the duration of action of alcuronium and serum globulins concentration namely alpha 2 [r=-0.324], beta [r=-0.209] and gamma [r=-0.391]

ABSTRACT

Succinyl Choline [SCh], decamethonium C-10, and alcuronium were clinically assessed and compared in C.S. anaestheia. SCh. group had the best Apgar and Scanlon scoring, and the least cardiovascular effect. In alcuronium group the Apgar and Scanlon scoring and blood pressure were insignificantly changed from SCh. group, i.e. alcuronium could have a place in C.S. anaesthesia. C-10 group showed a significant reduction in Apgar, Scanlon scoring, and blood pressure, therefore, it could probably pass the placental barrier

ABSTRACT

Clinical and pulmonary function studies including blood gas measurements were done on 20 volunteers: 10 controls and 10 asthmatics for evaluation of the respiratory effects of ketamine. During anaesthesia two asthmatic patients got apnea, 2 got cough while in controls one got apnea and another got cough. No dysrrhythmia developed in both groups. Pulmonary function and blood gas studies showed that ketamine does not significantly alter lung function in asthmatic patients. It can be concluded that ketamine can be safely given to asthmatic patients

ABSTRACT

The effect of thiopentone, althesin, ketamine and diazepam on the IOP were studied in 60 patients with cataract and/or glucoma. Thiopentone, althesin and diazepam reduce the IOP significantly to the same extent whereas ketamine increases the IOP significantly

ABSTRACT

Twenty patients with post traumatic coma admitted to I.C.U. were studied for liver functions. Fat free TPN therapy was given and some of the liver function tests were performed on five occasions. SAP, SGPT, SGOT and LDH showed a significant increase after 7, 14, and 21 days. Total serum proteins showed a significant decrease after 7, 14, and 21 days, while albumin also decreased significantly after 14 and 21 days. Balanced parenteral nutrition regimen consisting of dextrose vamin and intralipid supplemented by minerals, electrolytes, vitamins, co-factors and micronutrients is recommended for critically ill patients. Liver functions evaluation is essential in cases undergoing TPN therapy

ABSTRACT

The effect of phenobarbitone pretreatment was studied on bilharzial patients operated on for splenectomy. The pretreatment with phenobarbitone did not adversely affect bilharzial surgical patients receiving ether anaesthesia. The depressing effect of ether anaesthesia on some enzymes could even be overcome, particularly those sharing in carbohydrate metabolism. The enzymes involved in phosphate transfer and lipid catabolism were inhibited
