ABSTRACT

Acid-sensing ion channels are a class of extracellular H+ activated cation channels, belonging to the amiloride-sensitive epithelial Na+ channel/degenerin (ENaC/DEG) superfamily. During extracellular acidification, the channels are activated and produce corresponding action potential. Acid-sensing ion channels are extensively expressed in the peripheral and central nervous system. It plays an important in synaptic plasticity, mechanical sensation, injury sensation related to acidosis of local tissues, acid reception and retinal regulation. This article reviews the expression, biological characteristics and functions of acid-sensing ion channels in cochlea, vestibular tissue and auditory center, so as to improve the understanding of physiology and pathophysiology of auditory system.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the value of bedside lung ultrasound B-line score in the diagnosis of acute heart failure (AHF). Methods A retrospectively analysis was conducted. The adult patients presenting with acute dyspnea in intensive care unit (ICU) of Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2016 to June 2017 were enrolled. An 8-zone lung ultrasound was performed and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level was tested in all patients. AHF was determined as the final diagnosis by two experienced ICU doctors according to the diagnostic criteria of AHF. Patients were divided into two groups: AHF group and non-AHF group. The levels of BNP and B-line score were compared between the two groups, and the diagnostic value of BNP and B-line score in AHF was evaluated. Results Fifty-six patients were included in this study, with 32 of men and 24 of women, and with an average age of 77.3±8.8. Thirty-six patients were diagnosed as AHF. The level of BNP and lung ultrasound B-line score in AHF group were higher than those in non-AHF group [BNP (ng/L): 1 640.4±1 078.4 vs. 236.9±124.9,B line score: 12.8±5.3 vs. 5.4±1.8, both 1 < 0.01]. There was a strong correlation between elevated BNP levels and an increased B-lines score (R2 = 0.712, 1 = 0.000). The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) showed that when the cut-off of lung ultrasound B-line score was 8.5, AHF could be discriminated from dyspnea caused by other diseases (sensitivity was 77.8%, specificity was 95%, positive likelihood ratio was 15.56, negative likelihood ratio was 0.23).The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of lung ultrasound B-line score was 0.917 [95% confidence interval (95%CI) =0.847-0.987, 1 = 0.000], slightly lower than that of plasma BNP [0.979 (95%CI = 0.951-1.008)]. Conclusion Lung ultrasound B-line score was highly specific, but moderately sensitive for identifying patients with AHF.

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish an auditory evoked potential (AEP) detection system in zerbafish. Methods The AEP detection tank was designed and made, and then verified for its quality and reliability via four experiments: anesthesia experiment, swim bladder deflation, noise exposure and goldfish AEP test. Finally, zebrafish (total length form 10 mm to 46 mm) were determined using this system for AEP.Zebrafish randomly were divided into five groups according to total length (TL=12~15 mm, n=6;TL=17~20 mm,n=4;TL=22~26 mm, n=4;TL=32~37 mm, n=9;and TL=42~46 mm,n=12).Goldfish, as control group, were purchased for local petshop (TL=38~54 mm,n=8).Results The results of these four verifying experiments confirmed the biological, rather than artefactual, nature of the responses represented by the recorded waveforms. The AEPs were detected up to a much higher frequency limit (12 kHz) than previously reported. In this study, all fish demonstrated a range of hearing frequency from 100 Hz to 12 kHz without frequency expansion during development. The best hearing was observed at 600 Hz~1 kHz.The mean values of the frequency-averaged thresholds (mean SEM) were 141.7±1.32, 124.8±1.31, 121.8±1.49, 117.8 ±1.09 and 124.4±1.87 dB w, respectively, for the 5 TL groups. The AEP thresholds demonstrated both developmental improvement and age-related loss of hearing sensitivity. Conclusion An auditory evoked potential detection system of zerbafish has been established with stable performance and can be used for AEP detection of zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To describe tne regional different factors which impact on early cochlear implantation in prelingual deaf children between eastern and western regions of China.@*METHOD@#The charts of 113 children who received the cochlear implantation after 24 months old were reviewed and analyzed. Forty-five of them came from the eastern region (Jiangsu, Zhejiang or Shanghai) while 68 of them came from the western region (Ningxia or Guizhou). Parental interviews were conducted to collect information regarding the factors that impact on early cochlear implantation. Result:Based on the univariate logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio (OR) value of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) was 5. 481, which indicated the correlation of UNHS with early cochlear implantation is significant. There was statistical difference between the 2 groups (P0. 05). The multivariate analysis indicated that the UNHS and financial burden are statistically different between the eastern and western regions (P=0. 00 and 0. 040 respectively).@*CONCLUSION@#The UNHS and financial burden are statistically different between the eastern reinforced in the western region. In addition, the government and society should provide powerful policy and more financial support in the western region of China. The innovation of management system is also helpful to the early cochlear implantation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To compare the results of skin prick test with allergens of Allergopharma company or ALK company in Shanghai area.@*METHOD@#The study included 9 233 patients diagnosed as allergic rhinitis. The patients were divided in to two groups (Allergopharma group and Alutard-SQ group) SPT was given from June, 2005 to Feb, 2013. The results of the positive rate using two reagents were analyzed and compared.@*RESULT@#There were no significant differences between the two groups in age and gender (P > 0.05). The total positive rate in Allergopharma group was 62.90%, and 59.68% in Alutard-SQ group. The positive rate in Allergopharma group was significantly higher than that in Alutard-SQ group (P < 0.01). Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) were identified as the mostly responsible allergens. The positive rate of Der f in Allergopharma group and Alutard-SQ group was 55.23% and 45.57% respectively. The same rate were 54.83% and 47.89% of Der p. There were significant differences of the positive rate of two allergens in both groups (P < 0.01).@*CONCLUSION@#The total positive rate was different using different allergens for SPT among the patients diagnosed as allergic rhinitis of the same area. Dust mites were identified as main allergens. The positive rate was different when using different reagents, which needed more attention to make the decision of specific immune therapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To compare the levels of the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and blood fat of the patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) before and after surgery, meanwhile to analyze the influence on blood glucose and blood fat after the changes of body mass index (BMI), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and lowest oxygen saturation (LSpO2).@*METHOD@#Thirty-one patients with severe OSAHS were performed Z-palatoplasty (ZPP) or ZPP combined with genioglossus advancement with hyoid suspension (GAHM). Cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and FBG were detected before and after surgery.@*RESULT@#Preoperative HDL was negatively related to BMI and AHI, but not LSpO2. After surgery the BMI, AHI, LSpO2, HDL and FBG were all improved. The change of HDL had correlation with the changes of BMI and AHI, and there was linear correlation with HDL and BMI (r= -0.36).@*CONCLUSION@#The surgery of ZPP and ZPP combined with GAHM can improve the AHI, LSpO2, BMI, the FBG and blood fat of the patients with OSAHS. Lose weight and rectifying sleep disordered breathing were important to improve glycolipid metabolism disorder of the patients with OSAHS.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the protective effects of the ethanol extract and fractions from Polygonatum odoratum on renal lesion in diabetic rats. Methods An experimental diabetic rat model was successfully induced by one ip injection of streptozotocin (STZ) at a dose of 60 mg/kg. Diabetic rats were ig administrated the ethanol extract or fractions for 80 d. Serum levels of creatinine (Cr), urea (Ur), glycosylation hemoglobin (GHb), renal advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and urinary albumin (UAL) excretion rate were determined by biochemical methods. Glomerular volume and renal pathological changes were observed by optic microscope. Results Treatments with the ethanol extract and chloroform fraction decreased the levels of GHb and UAL excretion rate, and inhibited renal AGEs formation and renal pathological changes in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Conclusion The ethanol extract and chloroform fraction have protective effects on renal lesion in diabetic rats, which might be related to inhibiting AGEs formation.
