ABSTRACT

Introduction: malnutrition is an underlying cause of mortality in about half of the cases that occur among children less than five years in developing countries. In Africa including Kenya, this problem may be exacerbated by socio-demographic and socio-economic factors. This study aimed at determining nutritional status and association of demographic characteristics with malnutrition among children aged 1 day to 24 months in Kwale County, Kenya.Methods: a cross-sectional study was done in Mwaluphamba Location, Kwale County, Kenya. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire and administered to 380 randomly selected mothers who had children under the age of two years. Nutrition status was determined using anthropometric measurements. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and associations were determined by univariate logistic regression.Results: malnutrition prevalence for children in Kwale was high with 29.2% of the children being stunted and 13.4% being severely stunted. Underweight prevalence was at 20.8% of whom 9.5% were severely underweight. The global acute malnutrition rate was 18.9%. Stunting differed significantly between sex (males 35.1% compared to females 21.7%; p = 0.005). Significant differences were also observed in stunting and underweight due to age (p < 0.005).Conclusion: the prevalence of stunting, underweight and global acute malnutrition rates was high among the children. Male children were associated with a significantly higher prevalence of stunting than the females. The prevalence of underweight and stunting significantly increased with increasing age

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY The use of a “direct PCR” DNA polymerase enables PCR amplification without any prior DNA purification from blood samples due to the enzyme's resistance to inhibitors present in blood components. Such DNA polymerases are now commercially available. We compared the PCR performance of six direct PCR-type DNA polymerases (KOD FX, Mighty Amp, Hemo KlenTaq, Phusion Blood II, KAPA Blood, and BIOTAQ) in dried blood eluted from a filter paper with TE buffer. GoTaq Flexi was used as a standard DNA polymerase. PCR performance was evaluated by a nested PCR technique for detecting Plasmodium falciparum genomic DNA in the presence of the blood components. Although all six DNA polymerases showed resistance to blood components compared to the standard Taq polymerase, the KOD FX and BIOTAQ DNA polymerases were resistant to inhibitory blood components at concentrations of 40%, and their PCR performance was superior to that of other DNA polymerases. When the reaction mixture contained a mild detergent, only KOD FX DNA polymerase retained the original amount of amplified product. These results indicate that KOD FX DNA polymerase is the most resistant to inhibitory blood components and/or detergents. Thus, KOD FX DNA polymerase could be useful in serological studies to simultaneously detect antibodies and DNA in eluents for antibodies. KOD FX DNA polymerase is thus not limited to use in detecting malaria parasites, but could also be employed to detect other blood-borne pathogens. .


RESUMO O propósito deste estudo foi avaliar 6 polimerases de DNA disponíveis comercialmente que são resistentes aos inibidores do PCR para uma amplificação potencial de DNA de amostras de sangue total. O DNA genômico do parasita humano da malária, Plasmodium falciparum, foi analisado sob condições que incluíram os componentes inibidores do sangue extraído de sangue ressacado em papel de filtro. Nossos resultados sugerem que a polimerase KOD FX DNA é superior a outras polimerases. .

ABSTRACT

In Japan, The Japanese Association of Clinical Cancer Centers (JACCCs) was established in 1965 by systematizing cancer-treatment-oriented hospitals. The core center of JACCCs is the National Cancer Center in Tokyo. In 1984, JACCCs created The "Improvement for Clinical Cancer Centers in Japan" Study Group (The Study Group) which has subsequently routinely evaluated the effectiveness of the therapy that is provided. In general, the 5-year (relative) survival rate is employed as an indicator of the treatment efficacy. The present survey used the PC software program KAP developed by Chiba Cancer Center in Japan, to calculate 5-year observed survival rates and the 5-year relative survival rates using Ederer II methods. The overall 5-year relative survival rates in patients with stomach (15,353 patients), colon (5,054), rectum (3,695), lung (10,153), breast (11,302) and cervix of the uterus (6,336) were 68.7%, 72.2%, 69.4%, 28.1%, 86.1% and 81.1%, respectively. The survival rates discussed so far are principally observed survival rates. The 5-year relative survival rate for those institutions that specialize in cancer treatment should become an index for Japanese cancer treatment.
