ABSTRACT

Objective To detect the microvessel density(MVD) marked by MIF protein in esophagus squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC), and to see if a relationship exists between microvessel density(MVD) and clinicopathologic features. Methods The expression of MIF in vascular endothelial cell in forty ESCC specimens was examined by immunohistocbemistry staining, calculated the mean of MVD and analysed the relationship with clinicopathologic features. Results The positive rate of MIF protein was 95.00 %(38/40) in ESCC vascular endothelial cell. Compared with the normal esophageal squamous tissue[32.50 %(13/40)], there was significant difference in statistics, the mean of MVD was 26.5±8.5. MVD was positively correlated with the tumor TNM stages and lymph node motastasis. Conclusion MIF can be used in tagging vascular endothelial cell, MVD of ESCC was positively correlated with the tumor TNM stages and lymph node metastasis. It might be an major prognostic factor in ESCC.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) and in normal tissues around the esophageal cancer and determine whether there exists a relationship between MIF expression and clinicopathologic features. Methods The expression levels of MMIF in 80 ESCC specimens and 80 normal tissues around esophageal cancer by immunohistochemical staining. Results MIF was overexpressed in ESCC specimens and closely correlated with tumor differentiation and TNM staging. In normal esophageal tissues we found a small amount increment of MIF in the malpighian layer of mucous membrane. Conclusion MIF participates in the accommodation of cell growth cycle, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of ESCC and correlates with TNM staging.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize the experience of surgical treatment of ascending aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections. Methods From February 2001 to October 2005, 31 patients including 26 male, 5 female, aged 41.3 years old (range 14-72) received surgical management. Twenty cases were diagnosed as ascending aortic aneurysm and aortic root aneurysm, 8 as Standford A dissection, 3 as Stanford B dissection. Twenty-one patients underwent classic Bentall procedure in which VSD repair was carried out in 1 case, mitral valvoplasty in 2 and mitral valve replacement in 2; Four patients underwent modified Bentall procedure (coronary button technique); Three patients underwent Wheat procedure; The remaining 3 patients with Stanford B dissection underwent graft replacement of descending aorta. Results There was no death during hospital stay that lasted 13-46 d with an average of 16.4 d after operation. The mean clinical follow-up was (21?18.5) months (range 1-63 months). One patient died without describable cause two years later. One patient had ascending aorta-pulmonary artery fistula at color Doppler examination half a year later. One patient was detected rupture of distal anastomoses half a year after operation and underwent stent-graft, SG. Conclusion The surgical treatment of aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections could be carried out safely based on the accurate diagnosis, specific surgical strategy and fine technique.

ABSTRACT

Objective To summarize and report the experiences of surgical treatment of infective endocarditis. Methods From March 1995 to March 2004, surgical operations were performed in 25 patients with infective endocarditis, 9 of who received emergency surgery and 16 received selective operation. Replacement of mitral valve was performed in 3, aortic valve replacement in 13, mitral and aortic valve replacement in 8, Bentall procedure in 1.Associated cardiac lesions included patent ductus arterioles in 1, ventricular septal defect in 2, rupture of Valsalvaps sinus in 1. Results There was one postoperative death, which gave an overall hospital mortality of 4%. Twenty-four patients were cured and improved. Conclusion Surgical operation should be the preferred mode of surgical correction for infective endocarditis. The timing of surgery and proper perioperative management are key factors for the successful treatment of infective endocarditis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To present the experience of surgical treatment of 12 patients with advanced carcinoma of esophagus involving aorta. Methods Resection of esophageal carcinoma and cervical esophago-gastrostomy or supraaortic esophago-gastrostomy were done in 12 patients. In all 12 patients, the resection of limited aortic adventitia was performed in 2 patients, excision of aorta and simple suture in 2 patients and aortoplasty with Gore-Tex patch in 7 patients, the resected segment was replaced with artificial vessel in 1 patient. Results Complete recovery was achieved in 2 weeks in 12 patients, without severe complications such as aortic fistula. Conclusion Surgical treatment expands the operative indications for patients suffering from esophageal carcinoma involving aorta and improves their life quality.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the changes of the microvascular permeability after blunt chest trauma (BCT), endotoxemia and their combined injury in rats. Methods After the establishment of the rat models of BCT, endotoxemia and their combined injury in the right lungs, the fluorescein sodium (FINa) content was measured with flurospectrophotometer in lungs 0.5, 1, 4 and 8 h after injury. Results There was an early obvious increase of the microvascular permeability in the impact lateral (peak at half an hour after injury), and a delayed increase in the contralateral lung (peak at the 8th h) in the BCT group. The FINa content was higher in endotoxemia group than in the BCT group(P<0.05), and lower than that in the combined injury group(P<0.05) in the contralateral lung. Conclusion Results indicate that there were different pathophysiologic processes among the 3 kinds of injury and the FINa content is a useful index to manifest the changes of microvascular permeability in tissues.

ABSTRACT

To explore the protective effect of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) on acute lung injury induced by blunt chest trauma combined LPS challenge in rats. The combined injury model was reproduced by blunt impact on the right lateral superior chest of rats with 350 kPa drive pressure inflicted with a small multi function bio impact apparatus, folloned by an injection of LPS (5mg/kg) into the fail vein. PDTC (120mg/kg) was injected intravenously fore injury in animals of the PDTC pretreatment group. The 48 hour mortality rate was recorded, myeloperoxidase (MPO), NF ?B activity, and TNF?, IL 8 mRNA expression and their proteins of lung tissue were examined. The results showed that PDTC obviously reduced the 48h mortality the activity of MPO and NF ?B, and the gene expression and protein crotein contents of TNF?and IL 8,suggesting that PDTC has a protective effect on the combined injury. This effect might be associated with its inhibitory effecton NF ?B activation and expression as well as the release of proinflammatory cytokines.
