ABSTRACT
Background: The gallbladder, a critical component of the biliary system, plays a vital role in bile storage and digestion. Dysfunction in the gallbladder often results in gallstone formation, leading to significant healthcare burdens worldwide. Gallstone disease and gallbladder carcinoma are major health concerns, particularly in regions like India, where prevalence is high and poorly understood. Methods: This study aims to establish the normal baseline volume of the gallbladder using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) and compare it with measurements obtained via ultrasound (USG). The cross-sectional study conducted at Era's Lucknow medical college and hospital involved 265 individuals aged 18-80 years with non-gallbladder-related abdominal conditions. Results: Final results showed the mean gallbladder volume to be 29.3370 cm3 by DECT and 27.4058 cm3 by USG, with DECT measurements being on average 1.93 cm3 higher. A significant association was found between gallbladder volume and obesity, but not gender. Conclusions: The findings suggest DECT provides slightly higher and potentially more accurate measurements of gallbladder volume compared to USG. These insights contribute to a better understanding of gallbladder physiology and the implications of its volume in various pathologies, emphasizing the need for further studies with larger sample sizes to validate these observations.

Patients who were known cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 18 years and above who underwent at least 6 sessions of the CDC program were included in this study. Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus were excluded from the study. Follow-up was conducted after 90 days. Baseline data was compared with follow-up data. Results: A total of 69 patients were assessed in this study. Of the patients, testing was performed on 95.8% patients, of which. 92.8% patients were found to have negative glucose tolerance and 7.3% were found to have impaired glucose tolerance. Conclusions: The CDC program can be useful to restore euglycemia in know type 2 diabetic patients by reducing insulin resistance caused by central obesity.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Birds are among the best bio-indicators, which can guide us to recognize some of the main conservation concerns in ecosystems. Anthropogenic impacts such as deforestation, habitat degradation, modification of landscapes, and decreased quality of habitats are major threats to bird diversity. The present study was designed to detect anthropogenic causative agents that act on waterbird diversity in Tarbella Dam, Indus River, Pakistan. Waterbird censuses were carried out from March 2019 to February 2020 in multiple areas around the dam. A total of 2990 waterbirds representing 63 species were recorded. We detected the highest waterbird richness and diversity at Pehure whereas the highest density was recorded at Kabbal. Human activity impacts seemed to be the main factor determining the waterbird communities as waterbirds were negatively correlated with the greatest anthropogenic impacts. Waterbirds seem to respond rapidly to human disturbance.

ABSTRACT
Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM), an endocrine syndrome characterized by high blood glucose levels due to abrogated insulin activity. The existing treatments for DM have side effects and varying degrees of efficacy. Therefore, it is paramount that novel approaches be developed to enhance the management of DM. Therapeutic plants have been accredited as having comparatively high efficacy with fewer adverse effects. The current study aims to elucidate the phytochemical profile, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-diabetic effects of methanolic extract D. salicifolia (leaves) in Alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Alloxan was injected intraperitoneally (150 mg kg-1, b.w), to induced diabetes in mice. The mice were divided into three groups (n=10). Group 1 (normal control) received normal food and purified water, Group II (diabetic control) received regular feed and clean water and group III (diabetic treated) received a methanolic extract of the plant (300 mg kg-1) for 28 days with a typical diet and clean water throughout the experiment. Blood samples were collected to checked serum glucose and concentration of LDL, TC, TG. The extract demonstrated significant antihyperglycemic activity (P 0.05), whereas improvements in mice's body weight and lipid profiles were observed after treatment with the extract. This study establishes that the extract has high efficacy with comparatively less toxicity that can be used for DM management.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Increased anxiety and depressive symptoms have reported to be its association with long term illness. Because of having unwanted effects of newly available drugs, patients administering anxiolytic drugs usually discontinue the treatment before they are completely recovered. Therefore, there is a serious need to develop new anxiolytic drugs. The anxiolytic effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of Agaricus blazei in animal models was assessed. 24 male mice (Mus musculus genus) were included in the study. Four groups were prepared and each group contained six animals. The groups were vehicle control, positive control (diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p.) as well as two treatment groups receiving Agaricus blazei hydro-alcoholic extract at a dose of 136.50 mg/kg and 273.0 mg/kg orally. The Marble burying test, Nestlet shredding test and Light and Dark box test used to assess anxiolytic activity. Mice administered with diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p. while hydro-alcoholic extract of AbM (136.50 and 273.0 mg/kg, respectively) was administered via oral route which exhibited marked reduction in number of marbles-burying as compared to vehicle control group. Mice administered with diazepam 1.0 mg/kg, i.p. and Oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract of AbM (136.50 and 273.0 mg/kg, respectively) exhibited significant decrease in nestlet shredding in comparison to vehicle control group. The oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract at a dose of 136.5mg/kg and 273mg/kg showed elevation in time spent in light box and was comparable to standard treated group while time spent by mice following oral administration of hydro-alcoholic extract of Agaricus blazei at a dose of 273.0 mg/kg also showed elevation and was found to be more near to standard treated group (diazepam 1 mg/kg, i.p.).
ABSTRACT
Abstract Local and exotic germplasm of tomato remains a major source for genetic improvement. Assessment of such lines for biotic stresses particularly viral diseases are the most important criteria for selection in Pakistan, where Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) and Tomato Mosaic Virus (ToMV) are the major diseases/viruses. A set of 40 accessions (including indigenous Pakistani lines and exotic germplasm from Europe, the United States, and Asia) were evaluated for their resistance/infection response to ToMV with artificial inoculation under greenhouse conditions. Infection response was quantified through disease scoring and DAS-ELISA test (for ToMV). A subset of 24 lines, was further screened for TYLCV using disease scoring and TAS-ELISA. The tested lines showed significant variability for resistance to ToMV. Only one accession (Acc-17878) was resistant to the ToMV whereas seven accessions i.e. Acc-17890, AVR-261, CLN-312, AVR-321, EUR-333, CLN-352, and CLN-362 expressed resistance to TYLCV. Correlation between phenotypic evaluation was confirmed by the ELISA results in both diseases, although both tools complemented to assess the viral infection status. In future, tomato breeding programs must consider breeding for ToMV and TYLCV resistance (using identified germplasm in our study) so as to deliver virus resistant tomato varieties.

Background: Proper household waste management is crucial for environmental sustainability and public health. This study aimed to assess the awareness, knowledge, and practices of household waste management among 400 students and explore the associations with socio-demographic variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire covered aspects of awareness, knowledge, and practices related to household waste management. Socio-demographic information was also collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to determine associations. Results: Among students, 67.8% were aware of household waste management, 84.3% knew waste separation, but only 26.3% and 35% were aware of waste minimization and e-waste. While 92.8% recognized the local government's role, almost half remained unconvinced. 65.3% knew about household waste, and 71% knew disposal methods. However, only 79.3% knew solid waste reuse, and 94.8% knew 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.' Practices varied: 92.5% segregated waste, 57.5% composted kitchen waste, and 70.8% disposed outside. A minority (15.3%) disposed of outdoors. Diverse waste collection methods included 29.8% using bins, 28.2% using tin cans, and 15.3% using plastic bags. ABSTRACT
This research focuses on the functional characterization of 19 rhizobia strains isolated from Southern Rajasthan's Udaipur and Dungarpur districts, with an emphasis on their multiple Plant Growth Promoting (PGP) activities. Through a series of tests encompassing Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) production, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, ammonia production, and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production, this study elucidates the diverse PGP potential of these rhizobia strains. The results showcase variations in IAA production, highlighting their ability to enhance root development and overall plant growth, while also revealing strains capable of siderophore production, indicating potential iron uptake facilitation. Furthermore, some strains exhibit phosphate solubilization, ammonia production, and HCN production capabilities, signifying their potential to improve nutrient availability and protect plants from pathogens. These findings underscore the promise of harnessing the PGP activities of these rhizobia strains for sustainable agricultural practices in Southern Rajasthan and similar agroecological regions, with implications for enhanced crop yields and soil health.
ABSTRACT
The current investigation on the repercussions of drought stress on the growth parameters of the Moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia) has been carried out in a semi-field condition. Two sets of local moth bean cultivars (RMO-40: fifteen in each) were prepared, and one was subjected to terminal drought stress. The rest was maintained with proper watering as a control set. The treated plants were thoroughly evaluated based on leaf length, root length, and relative leaf water content in comparison with the control ones. The findings of this study reveal a significant impact of drought stress on moth bean's growth and physiological performance. Under drought conditions, treated plants exhibited considerable reductions in leaf length and root length compared to their well-watered counterparts. Additionally, the relative leaf water content declined under drought stress, indicating decreased water uptake and retention within the plants under stress. These outcomes underscore the vulnerability of moth bean to drought stress, emphasizing the urgency of developing efficient water management strategies and drought-resistant varieties to safeguard food security in regions where this legume serves as a staple crop. This research highlights the importance of understanding the adverse effects of drought stress on moth bean's growth parameters for sustainable agriculture and food production.
ABSTRACT
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is most common endocrine disorder all over the world. Metformin has been used as a first line drug, however, it has several gastrointestinal side effects. This study aims to determine the frequency of metformin induced gastrointestinal side effects among type 2 diabetic patients and role of prebiotics and probiotics in the prevention of the metformin-induced GI side effects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in a tertiary care hospital, Rawalpindi, among 130 for one year from January 2021 to December 2022. Data was collected by applying a self-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used for the data analysis. Data analysis was performed via statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 25.0. Results: The means for study variables like age, dose, and duration of therapy were 54.09 years, 1000 mg and 3.6 years respectively. Female patients had more GI side effects than male patients. Similarly, GI side effects frequency was also higher among the patients who were on metformin alone than the patients who were using metformin and combination of prebiotics and probiotics. Patients with higher dose of metformin and shorter duration of metformin therapy had higher frequency of GI symptoms. The most common GI symptom was constipation followed by diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, vomiting/nausea, dyspepsia, loss of appetite and flatulence. Conclusions: Metformin induced GI symptoms were common among study population. Use of prebiotics and probiotics combination with metformin, low dose of metformin, and longer duration of metformin use were found protective against the metformin-induced GI side effects.
ABSTRACT
Atypical serious respiratory illnesses were reported in December 2019 from Wuhan, a city of China, which later spread to other places rapidly and became a global pandemic. Soon it was discovered to be caused by a novel corona virus, named as the severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the disease caused by it as corona virus disease-19 (COVID-19). Since COVID-19 is a new viral disease, world is still struggling to find out a permanent remedy to overcome this serious health problem. Developing safe and effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 has become the only way forward to tackle it. Various vaccines have been developed and are approved for mass vaccination on emergency basis. Both classical and next generation vaccine platforms are being used to develop COVID-19 vaccine. It seems interesting to have a look on the various types of vaccines and get an insight into them so that we can get familiarize with the COVID-19 vaccination.
ABSTRACT
Background: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder of children that affects almost all aspects of the life. The role of diet in the management of the ADHD is understudied in Pakistan. This study aimed to assess the impact of different types of diet on the symptoms of ADHD among the children with ADHD. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 58 children with ADHD in Rawalpindi. Ethical approval and informed consent were obtained. Patients’ recruitment was done via developed criteria and Convenient sampling technique. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA were used to determine the difference of ADHD severity among various frequencies of different included foods via Conner Parent rating scale-revised short form. Data analysis was performed by SPSS version 25.0. Results: The difference in hyperactivity index, impulsivity, and learning problems score on CPR-RS among various frequencies of carbohydrate, protein rich and fat foods, was statistically significant and with the increase intake of carbohydrate and protein rich foods, the score on CPR-RS of hyperactivity index, impulsivity, and learning problems also goes up. Whereas, with the increase intake of fat rich foods, the score of hyperactivity index, impulsivity, and learning problems goes down. Conclusions: In short, the high intake of carbohydrate and protein rich foods, increase the severity of the symptoms of ADHD, while, high intake of fat rich foods decreases the severity of the symptoms of ADHD among children.
ABSTRACT
Background: Breastfeeding impacts the children physical and mental growth and development. The impact of breastfeeding on intelligence quotient (IQ) of children is under-researched in Pakistan. This study aimed to determine the impact of breastfeeding on the intelligence quotient among children of Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The association between the type of milk and intelligence quotient (p=0.003) and association between duration of breastfeeding and intelligence quotient (p=0.04) was statistically significant. Conclusions: Children who had been on breastfeeding had better IQ. Furthermore, children who were breastfed for longer duration had even better IQ than children who were on breastfeeding for shorter duration.
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome (MRS) is a rare neuro-mucocutaneous condition. It mainly includes three triads as orofacial swelling, facial palsy and fissured tongue. All of the classical triad may not be seen at the same time, as symptoms may appear in different interval of time and has a recurrence. MRS is diagnosed based on oligosymptomatic when two or more clinical features are present or monosymptomatic cases when there evidence of a non-necrotising, granulomatous cheilitis in patients with isolated facial or lip edema can be noted in biopsy. Case Presentation: In this case report a 18 year old male patient all the three classic clinical characteristic features as granulomatous cheilitis, unilateral facial muscle palsy and a fissured tongue are seen. The clinical features of this rare condition along with treatment procedure are presented. Conclusion: Oral corticosteroids are the mainstay in the treatment of MRS. Intralesional triamcinolone acetonide used in oro-facial edema. In recurrent cases of MRS need second-line immunosuppressants like methotrexate and thalidomide. In refractory recurrent facial nerve palsies Surgical decompression of the facial nerve may be considered.
