ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEThe study aims to investigate the correlation between total input for a period of 24 h and the daily physiological requirements to develop practical guidelines for postoperative infusion management of cleft patients.

METHODSSixty-three cleft lip and palate patients under three years old who underwent surgery were included in the study. The amount of liquid taken orally as well as intravenous input were recorded for a period of 24 h and compared with the daily physiological requirements. Based on the comparison results, the amount of intravenous infusion was adjusted to match the physiological requirements. Eighty-one patients under one year old were also included to evaluate the effectiveness of the adjustment. The amount of liquid taken orally and intravenous inputs were also recorded and the correlation between total input and urine output analyzed.

RESULTSThe total input of the first group of patients significantly exceeded the physiological requirements. After adjustment, the liquid intake remained at the same level, but the total intake moved closer to the physiological requirements. Statistically significant correlations were observed between liquid taken orally and intravenous intakes, and between total intake and urine formation.

CONCLUSIONSMore precise management of postoperative infusion is necessary for cleft patients. For patients less than six months old, the amount of intravenous infusion should be around 60% of the physiological requirements, whereas that for patients between six months and one year should be around 75%.

ABSTRACT

@#ObjectiveTo describe 64 cases of cerebrovascular accidents temporally associated with cervical vertebra manipulation therapy in terms of patients' characteristics, potential risk factors, nature of complication, and neurologic sequelae.MethodsThree researchers using a uniform data abstraction instrument performed an independent review of 64 previously medicine records describing cerebrovascular ischemia after cervical vertebra manipulation. Descriptive statistics were calculated for characteristics of the patients and the complications. Means and standard deviations were computed for continuous variables. Frequencies were computed for continuous variables. Frequencies and proportions were calculated for categorical variables.ResultsProposed risk factors include age, gender, migraine headaches, hypertension, diabetes, birth control pills, cervical spondylosis, and smoking. It was unable to identify factors from the clinical history and physical examination of the patient that would assist a physician attempting to isolate the patient at risk of cerebral ischemia after cervical manipulation.ConclusionsCerebrovascular accident after manipulation appear to be unpredictable and should be considered an inherent, idiosyncratic, and rare complication of this treatment approach.

ABSTRACT

Objective Estimate the paternity exclusion probability for 15 short tandem repeats (CODIS set plus Penta D and Penta E) in duo paternity tests. Methods 644 random individuals were paired to con-struct 207046 fictitious duo families. Cases of non-exclusion or with only one exclusionarylocus were count-ed. Results 27 cases could not be excluded by the 15 STR loci. The combined probability of exclusion was 0.999869. Number of cases showing only one exclusionary locus was 384 (0.185%). Conclusion To con-firm relationship in duo cases with only 15 STRs should be careful. Extensive genetic markers is needed to discriminate one locus exclusion or mutation.

ABSTRACT

Objective To identify routine forensic samples by genotyping method for HLA - A locus. Method A two - step PCR - SSP method was established. The first step is amplification with a pair of primers specific for all HLA - A alleles, the second step is amplification with primers specific for HLA - A30, A31, A33 respectively, using the first step amplification product as template. Secondly amplified PCR products were genotyped by electro-phoresis. Results 100 blood stains with a serological typing result of HLA - A30, A31 and A33 were tested with this method. The discrepancy rate between serological and genetic typing was 29%. Seminal stains, salivary stains reserved for 2 years and blood stains reserved for 18 years in room temperature gave satisfactory results. Conclusions It is better to replace serological typing by genetic typing. A two - step PCR - SSP genotyping method can be applied to forensic samples.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the validation of fluorescent multiplex microsatellite amplification technique for use in the caseworks of umbilical blood cell transplantation monitor. Methods Six post-transplant recipients of umbilical cord blood cell transplantation were monitored by analyzing microsatellite DNA loci. DNA samples were amplified using a fluorescent labeling primers multiplex amplification system of 15 microsatellites markers, followed by typing on a DNA automated sequencer. Recipients' or donors' microsatellites DNA profiles were compared before and after transplantation. Results All recipients and donors exhibited different DNA profiles. Without reference samples of pre-transplant or donors, the changes of the 15 microsetellites genotypes of the post-transplant recipients still could be analyzed. The recipient type turned to donor type was observed over time. Conclusion Under the condition of using multiplex amplification of the 15 microsatellites to monitor the umbilical blood cell transplantation, reference sample of pre-transplant or donor did not need to be detected simultaneously.
