ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of intratympanic steroid injection in treatment of induced sensorineural hearing loss in guinea pigs using scanning electron microscope. This work was conducted on 25 healthy guinea pigs with normal eardrum, preserved pinna reflex. The animals were divided into five groups: Control group, steroid group to evaluate the effect of intratympanic methylprednisolone acetate [MPA] injection by scanning electron microscope [SEM], noise group to demonstrate the scanning electron microscopic pictures immediately after the acoustic trauma, noise plus time group to evaluate effect of induced sensorineural hearing loss using micromotor drill against the body of incus by SEM and noise plus MPA group to evaluate the effect of MPA after 12 days from induced sensorineural hearing loss by SEM. The results showed that MPA had no damaging effect on inner ear structure, noise plus time group showed significant improvement but scar formation was noticed, while noise plus steroid group showed significant improvement with near normal pictures. It was concluded that MPA is a definite treatment of induced sensorineural hearing loss

ABSTRACT

The incidence of dysphagia was reported in up to 35% of goiter patients with mild to moderate severity. Pharyngo-esophageal manometry is a diagnostic test that provides both quantitative and qualitative assessment of pressure, coordination and motility for both the pharynx and esophagus

ABSTRACT

In the present study, spinous process-lamina graft for posterior lumbar interbody fusion was used in 30 patients having first and second degree spondylolisthesis. The incidence of solid bone fusion was 90%, as assessed by CT scanning and densitometry at six months postoperatively. The advantage of using spinous process-lamina graft is that it shortened the operative time, spared a second painful wound. The use of spinous process-lamina graft in posterior lumbar interbody fusion was recommended

ABSTRACT

A defined part of the dark adapted fundus is bleached by a short flash of light. The fundus of four normal and four abnormal persons [bilateral macular degeneration] were photographed. The values of optical density at several points across several lines passing through the central fovea were obtained. Large difference for normal and abnormal persons appeared

ABSTRACT

Posterior chamber intra-ocular lens has become an important tool for visual rehabilitation after cataract surgery. We have studied the incidence of the post-operative complications in our department. We have selected 35 eyes to receive posterior chamber lens after extracapsular surgery and 35 eyes with no implant, that underwent the same procedure, were taken so control, Fluorescein angiography was done for every case at 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively or if there is an unexplained change in visual acuity. We have found a low incidence of both anterior and posterior segment complications also the incidence of cystoid macular oedema was low compaired to the control group

ABSTRACT

Most eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy are high risk cases for neovascular glaucoma [N.V.G.] and usually become blind especially in the presence of active retinal neovascularization. Endophotocoagulation offers a procedure to coagulate the slightly elevated retina and those fibrovascular pre-retinal membranes. Endophotocoagulation is also useful in reconstruction of the pupil, coagulation of retinal tears and in aphakic glaucoma. Endophotocoagulation was carried out on eleven eyes: Endophotocoreoplasty in two eyes, coagulation of retinal tears with vitreous haemorrhage in two eyes, endophotocyclocoagulation in one aphakic eye, removal of I.C.F.B. preceeded by endolaser in one eye,and endophotocoagulation in five eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy after vitrectomy. Results are discussed and advantages over bipolar bimanual diathermy are mentioned

ABSTRACT

The blue field entopic phenomenon [BFE], which allows the observation of one's own leucocytes flowing in the macular retinal capillaries was used to predict postoperative macular function in 90 consecutive patients undergoing cataract surgery. Ten eyes were excluded because of in cooperation or complications occurred during and after surgery. The test was found positive in 97% of patients had good macular function postoperatively and 83% negative who had poor macular function. The test is noninvasive, inexpensive, easy to perform and provides information on the perifoveal retinal circulation and on macular function. It can also be used to clarify the prognostic value of cataract extraction preoperatively

ABSTRACT

80 patients were treated by various methods to construct a new pupil. Anatomical results were 100%, and the overall good visual results were 93%. photocoreplasty with laser, pars plana coreoplasty with vitrectomy instrument, and Sato knife surgical iridotomy were the methods which have been used during this study

ABSTRACT

100 patients with various macular and parafoveal diseases, were treated with Krypton laser photocoagulation. Multiple techniques were utilized after complete ocular investigative procedures including pre-operative and postoperative Fluorescein angiorgraphy. Recording of results were done by a home computer [Texas Instrument]. The overall visual improvement were 28%, and stationary visual results were 7O%. Good anatomical results were obtained in 100% of the cases treated

ABSTRACT

Krypton laser iridectomy was performed on 20 eyes of 14 patients. In eight eyes with closed angle glaucoma the intraocular pressure [IOP] was controlled within normal limits. Eleven eyes with narrow angles maintained a normal intraocular pressure after preventive laser iridectomy. Only in one eye with chronic closed-angle glaucoma the IOP was not controlled after laser iridectomy and the iridocorneal angle remained practically the same as before the procedure. The mean pressure was 28 mm.Hg. applanation before and 18 after the procedure. The iridectomies were performed with the use of Krypton laser power of 200 to 400 mw, exposure time of 0.1 to 0.2 S, and spot size of 50 to 200 u. Blue irides were slightly more resistant to treatment than brown irides. Krypton laser iridectomy by this technique is highly recommended as the procedure of choice for eyes with acute angle-closure glaucoma and for preventive iridectomy in the fellow eyes

ABSTRACT

Ten intra-ocular implants of the iris Clip Binkhorst four loop lenses were implanted in ten eyes after intra-capsular cataract extraction. The surgical procedure was discussed and results were encouraging. The lens was fixed by transiridectomy suture. Ultrasonography was done to determine the power of I.O.L

ABSTRACT

The presence of one malignant growth of the colon does not exclude the presence of a second one in the same organ. Preoperative sigmoidoscopic and radiologic examination should be done in all cases to exclude the presence of double lesions. A careful 6-monthly follow-up should be made in all cases with colorectal cancer
