ABSTRACT

Thirty-two middle cholesteatomas in 30 patients [19 males and 11 females with age ranged from 8 to 48 years] complaining of offensive ear discharge and manifestations of middle ear disease have been fully investigated clinically, audiologically and radiologically and operated upon. The high resolution CT with 1.5-2 mm thickness cuts in axial and coronal planes were sufficient to detect the soft tissue mass of cholesteatoma, bone erosions, ossicular destruction and extent of the lesion. Brain CT was done for cases with intracranial complications. Complications were either extension in the temporal bone and or intracranially. Ossicular necrosis was detected in 23 cases, brain abscess in 5, meningitis in 2 and recurrence in 3 cases. Operative interference was done either urgently or as a planned operation by either closed or opened techniques for the cholesteatomas and their complications

ABSTRACT

Thirty nine patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome [RHS] were seen. The spontaneous course of this syndrome was studied by analyzing its signs and symptoms. There was a nonsignificant male preponderance and a nonsignificant high peak between the age of 40 and 60 years. A satisfactory recovery was found in 56.4%, with a mean duration of recovery of 10.5 wees and 43.6% had unsatisfactory recovery with various degrees of sequelae, with a mean duration of 53.6 weeks. There was a strong correlation between the severity of the paralysis in the first two weeks and early remission and the final facial recovery function. The prognostic correlation between other clinical findings and some tests of current use and the final facial function was studied

ABSTRACT

Forty three cases of head and neck haemangiomas were treated at otorhinolaryngology and General Surgery Departments in Mansoura University Hospital during the period of 1988 to 1991. They were 23 cases of cutaneous haemangiomas, 14 cases lip haemangiomas and 6 cases oropharyngeal haemangiomas. The adopted modalities of treatment were discussed including surgery, injection sclero therapy using ethanolamine, and intra-lesional steroid injection. Ethanolamine and intra-lesional steroid injection are capable of producing a satisfactory therapeutic effect and should be tried as the first line of treatment in head and neck haemangiomas

ABSTRACT

Various surgical techniques of inferior turbinectomy: submucous resection > partial longitudinal turbinectomy and anterior turbinectomy have been used for treatment of enlarged inferior turbinates. All procedures proved to be effective to relieve nasal obstruction due to enlarged inferior turbinates. However, anterior turbinectomy is technically easier and has low chances of post-operative bleeding and with minimal complications. Submucous resection is technically difficult. Partial longitudinal turbinectomy has the higher post-operative bleeding and is not suitable in localities with low humidity otherwise atrophic rhinitis may develop

ABSTRACT

The expression of keratin, carcino embryonic antigen [C.E.A] and epithelial membrane antigen [E.M.A] were studied in the epithelial linings of 9 cases of inverted papilloma of the nose and para-nasal sinuses, using an indirect immunoperoxidase method on formaline fixed paraffin embedded sections 8 cases were positive with polyclonal antibodies of keratin specificity. The pattern of expression of C.E.A. and E.M.A. differed it was suprabasal in 7 cases with C.E.A. and basal in 5 cases with [E.M.A.] although these differences may not be of diagnostic significance, the constant expression of keratin may provide a useful marker of inverted papilloma
