ABSTRACT

This study was performed to estimate the prevalence of abortions and to evaluate its association with the socio-demographic factors in an urban slum. The data was collected based on recall obstetric history fromi86 females through systematic r and om sampling from 01.04.2001 to 30.06.2001. It was found that the abortion rate was 419.35/1000 women of reproductive age group. Abortion ratio was 109.39/1000 live births. There was strong association of induced abortion with non-Muslim family, working of female and illiteracy of husb and. On the other h and gravidity 5 or above [increasing gravidity] was statistically associated with total abortions. It was concluded that there is an unmet need for controlling unwanted pregnancies and promoting birth spacing among Pakistani women. Some important social and demographic factors determine the abortion behavior in Pakistan

ABSTRACT

To find out number of cases with endometriosis. its relationship with age, parity and socioeconomic condition and to document its different stages. Design: An observational study. Place and Duration: Study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi, over four years period from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2003. Subject And Methods Three hundred diagnostic laparoscopies were performed in patients with various clinical presentations such as chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, infertility and menstrual irregularities 'to find out those due to endometriosis. Forty cases of endometriosis were diagnosed at laparoscopy. Majority [75%] of the patients with endometriosis were between 20-30 years of age. Endometriosis was more common in infertile as compared to fertile ladies. As JPMC is a tertiary care public sector hospital providing services to relatively poor class of patients, all the cases of endometriosis were found in lower socio economic class. Ten cases [25%] of endometriosis were in stage-I, fifteen cases [37.5%] in stage-II while there were 5 and 10 cases in stage III and IV respectively. Endometriosis is not an uncommon gynecological problem and is commonly found in young and reproductive age group, of patients. Laparoscopy being a minimally invasive procedure requiring minimum time of hospitalization and minor post-operative discomfort is invaluable in diagnosis of endometriosis

ABSTRACT

to determine the correlation of symptoms of vaginitus with candidiasis and to see the prevalence of candida albicans in pregnant women at term and at preterm delivery. Study design: Total of 262 pregnant women were enrolled with completion of questionnaire and genital specimens taken for culture. Result: Out of 262 enrolled pregnant women, 74 cases 28.2% were positive for candida albicans with 24% at preterm and 30.8% at term delivery. In this study we are unable to find any correlation among symptoms of vaginitis and candidiasis. These results suggest that candida colonization is not associated with preterm delivery

ABSTRACT

Glove perforation during surgery places the surgeon at risk of acquiring infectious diseases from contamination of serum of the patient. This prospective study was conducted to determine the incidence of perforations, to know their topographical distribution and to identify factors associated with increased likelihood of perforations. Initial leak rate was 17.5% and 32.5% for new and recycled gloves respectively. Out of 200 pairs of gloves tested, perforation rate was 38.95% for new and 54.29% for recycled gloves. A significantly low rate of perforation [28.57%] was present in vaginal obstetrical procedures [episiotomies] compared to 62.07% for those performed by abdominal route [LSCS]. Status of the operating surgeon was not related to number of glove perforations. Needle pricks were responsible for 53.19% perforations. In 62.77% cases perforation involved left hand glove. Most of the perforations were seen on index finger [34.78%], middle ringer [27.54%] and thumb [22.46%]. The perforation rate was increased with increase in operating time. A case is made for promotion of no touch surgical techniques during surgery and close monitoring of the quality of gloves by the government
