ABSTRACT

Twelve cases with non-united fracture of the carpal scaphoid bone were treated by a combination technique using bone grafting with radial styloidectomy and osteosyn-thesis with a cortical screw 2.0 mm in diameter. Union was achieved in ten cases, with a percentage of 84%, within an average period of 17.6 weeks

ABSTRACT

Twenty-four women with pregnancy induced hypertension [PIH] presenting to Al-Azhar University Hospital in the last trimester of pregnancy were divided into three equal groups. Each group received therapeutic doses of a hypotensive drug [labetalol, pindolol with clopamide and alpha methyldopa]. The effect of these drugs was studied during the intrapartumperiodandthe results were compared with eight normosensitive patients during labor [control group]. No significant change in fetal heart rate [FHR] could be attributed to the drug administrated in case of labetalol alpha methyldopa. As regards pindolol with clopamide, a significant change in long term variability was observed in patients suffering from sever PIH. The pHof fetal blood samples taken from the umbilical cord [UC] did not correlate with maternal pH in patients who received pindolol with clopamide

ABSTRACT

The effect of acute muscular exercise on 2, 3-diphosphoglycerate concentration in erythrocytes was studied in 18 young athletes, 17-22 years old. The subjects were divided into 3 groups : A, B and C each composed of 6 athletes. Blood samples were taken at rest and 5 mm. after the end of a standardized muscular exercise of 12 mm. duration. The maximum performance for each subject of the groups [A], [B] and [C] was 180W, 210W and 240W respectively, [W = watt]. The VO[2] Max was determined by indirect method for each subject during the experiment. The average V02 Max for the subjects in groups [A], [B] and [C] was 50,42-58,65 and 66,37 ml/kg/min. respectively. The blood samples were analysed for 2, 3-DPG concentration in erthrocytes, hematocrit, PH and blood glucose level. The body temperature was also measured at rest and 5 mm. after the end of muscular exercise. It was found that in group [A], there was a significant increase in 2, 3-DPG level as a result of muscular exercise while there was no significant change in it in the other 2 groups. There was no significant change in hematocrit, PH or body temperature in the three groups as a result of the effort performed. However as regards blood glucose level there was no significant change in it in group Aa, while there was a significant decrease in it in groups [B] and [C] as a result of exercise. The significance of these findings are discussed
