ABSTRACT

The hyperlipidemia is a life style disorder and has affected mankind since antiquity. Detailed work has been carried out to reduce the burden of this disease and many drugs have been proposed in different systems of medicine to overcome the situation and to minimize complications. Unani system of medicine also has significant contribution in this regard and a number of studies are going on for the same. Here, it is aimed to explore the possible concept of hyperlipidemia in Unani system of medicine. A disease Siman-i-mufrat is discussed in ancient Unani literature, which has many similarities with hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is a major health problem in entire world and responsible for the development of atherosclerosis and hence in coronary artery disease and many fatal conditions. The Unani system can provide a valuable contribution towards reduction of the disease development and help to decrease its complications. In Unani system of medicine, the concept of fat or oily substance in blood is present and was narrated as Dasoomat-fid-dam

ABSTRACT

It was believed that in classical Unani text that there was no concept of eosinophilia in the ancient time. On the contrary, while going through the Unani literature, it was revealed that renowned Unani scholars have described certain diseases like Zeequn Nafas [Asthma], Deedan-e-Ama [Intestinal Worms], Daulfeel [Elephantiasis], Nar-e-farsi [Eczema] and Jarb [Scabies] in their treatises, which are well known causes of eosinophilia. Moreover, there are some conditions namely Sual [cough], Attas [Sneezing], Hikka [Pruritus], Hikkaul unf [Nasal itching] and Shara [Urticaria], which reflect the concept of allergen in their etiology and management

The invention of microscope played the vital role in the discovery of eosinophils. Thus, diseases which have been described since antiquity mimic with the eosinophilia, and a stepwise progression in knowledge has led to the present era as a well known clinical entity viz. Eosinophilia

ABSTRACT

In the month of November, 2013, there came a male patient with the complaints of frequent vomiting and body ache. His age was 35 years. When the patient was exposed for clinical examination, there were prominent skin folds on either side of the neck. It was our first experience to see a male person with webbing of neck. On examination, his height was 5 feet and 4 inches and was of normal intelligence. The pulse rate was 76 per minute, and blood pressure was 184/82 mm Hg. On examination of chest, no significant abnormality or deformity was observed. However, there was prominent grade III systolic murmur in the 2nd aortic area. Respiratory system was normal and on abdominal examination, no organomegally was found. The patient was asked as usual to undress for genital examination, the size of testes were smaller and firm, not compatible to his age. Right testis was higher as compared to left and hernial orifices were normal. Despite of one of his presenting complaints, no musculoskeletal deformity was observed and also no abnormal pigmentation of skin was seen

The clinical findings prompted us to diagnose the patient as a case of Noonan syndrome which is a counter part of Turner's syndrome in females. We asked the patient to get admitted so that the detailed clinical examination and necessary investigation including karyotyping be carried out. However, the patient left against medical advice and did not report to OPD for further discussion and councelling

ABSTRACT

Asthma is a dangerous disease of lungs, which was known to mankind from the time of Hippocrates, but its peculiar features identified it. Hippocrates was the first to name this disease as 'panting' which means breathlessness1. Later on many Unani scholars keenly studied about Asthma and mentioned it in their books. The Unani scholars successfully treated this disease by Unani medicines, which even the present scholars, are following. The modern medical science invented bronchodilators and corticosteroids thus made the treatment much easier. Apart from all these advancements, the complete treatment of asthma is yet to be achieved. The drugs, which have been selected for the purpose of this research work, have been in practice since ancient times. The main objective of this study was to scientifically evaluate the efficacy of our drugs in commonly encountered clinical entity, asthma. The study was open single group uncontrolled randomised clinical trial. In the present study thirty cases of 15 to 55 years of age who were clinically diagnosed were enrolled in the study for 60 days from indoor and outdoor of the Department of Moalejat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College and Hospital, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh during the period extending from 2006-2008. The patients were treated with Irasa [Iris ensata Thunb.], Zanjabeel [Zingiber officinalis Rosc.], Qaranfal [Eugenia caryophylla Thunb.] and Maghz-e-Amaltas [Cassia fistula Linn.] 6 grams, 3 grams, 3 grams and 4 grams respectively in the form of powder 12 hourly for 60 days. Significant improvement in symptoms and signs and laboratory findings of the disease was observed

ABSTRACT

Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia [TPE] is a syndrome of wheezing, fever and eosintphilia seen predominantly in the Indian subcontinent and other tropical areas. The Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia is not defined as such in Unani text but when we go through its etiology and clinical manifestation then we encounter some clinical entities cited in the classical text simulating the features of Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia. The Unani scholars successfully treated such conditions by Unani medicines, which even the present scholars, are following. The main objective of this study was to scientifically evaluate the efficacy of our drugs in Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia. The study was open single group uncontrolled randomised clinical trial. In the present study twelve cases of 15 to 55 years of age who were diagnosed on the basis of subjective and objective parameters were enrolled in the study for 60 days. Significant improvement in symptoms and signs and laboratory findings of the disease was observed

ABSTRACT

Oedema is defined as clinically apparent increase in the interstitial fluid volume which may expand by several liters before it becomes clinically apparent. Depending upon its cause and mechanism, oedema may be localized or generalized. In generalized form it is recognized by puffiness of face and by persistence of an indentation of the skin following pressure, which is known as pitting oedema. The patients may complain of fitting of ring on a finger snugly or difficulty on putting of shoes particularly towards evening. It has been our observation in the recent past that there is an appreciable increase in number of patients suffering from generalized swelling without any known cause. This prompted us to find out the cause of such a sudden rise in its incidence. The present study is a demographic study of 126 patients suffering from oedema due to different causes. In idiopathic type oedema, we have tried to discuss its possible causes

ABSTRACT

Urticaria refers to an area of focal dermal oedema secondary to a transient increase in capillary permeability. Although persons in any age group may experience acute or chronic urticaria, these lesions increase in frequency after adolescence, with the highest incidence occurring in the third decade of life. In Unani texts, Urticaria has been mentioned as Shara or pitti uchalna as one of the clinical entities while in modern medicine it is considered as the sign, which is found in various diseases. Unani Scholars while describing its aetiology have emphasised mainly on the humoral basis and named certain foods and drugs which may be responsible for precipitating the clinical manifestation of Urticaria. The main objective of this study was to scientifically evaluate the anti-allergic activity of our drugs in this commonly encountered clinical entity, referred as Urticaria. The study was open single group uncontrolled randomised clinical trial. In the present study thirty cases of 20 to 60 years of age who were clinically diagnosed were enrolled in the study for 45 days from the Department of Moalejat OPD, Aligarh Unani and Ayurvedic Medical College, Aligarh. The patients were treated with Irasa [Iris ensata Thunb.], Zanjabeel [Zingiber officinalis Rosc.], Qaranfal [Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb.] and Maghz-e-Amaltas [Cassia fistula Linn.] 6 grams, 3 grams, 3 grams and 4 grams, respectively, in the form of decoction 12 hourly for 45 days. All the patients were assessed for subjective parameters. Significant improvement in clinical presentation of the disease was observed. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the formulation was found effective in Shara [Urticaria]
