ABSTRACT

A new compound, 3β-acetoxylanosta-7,9(11),24-triene-26-al (3), and seven known compounds (1 – 2 and 4 – 8) were isolated from Ganoderma tropicum (Jung.) Bres. collected in Tay Nguyen, Vietnam. The structures of these compounds were determined by one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and high-resolution ESI-MS, and by comparison with literature data. All of the isolated compounds were tested for nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction activity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae-stimulated RAW 246.7 cells. Among them, compounds 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 enhanced the NBT reduction in a dose-dependent manner.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Novel biomarkers for screening, diagnosis and monitoring the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), one of the most common cancers in Vietnam, are urgently required. Increasing evidence suggests that microRNA-141 (miR-141) is associated with NPC, owing to its ability to affect the expression of genes that modulate tumorigenesis. Unfortunately, research on miR-141 expression in Vietnamese patients is limited. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate miR-141 expression and assess whether miR-141 might be a potential biomarker for diagnosis of NPC in Vietnamese patients. Total RNA isolated from 40 NPC biopsy samples and 37 non-cancerous samples was analyzed by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. The miR-141 expression levels were compared between NPC biopsy and non-cancerous samples. The frequency of miR-141 detection was 37.50% and 10.80% in the NPC and non-cancerous samples, respectively (p = 0.0143). The miR-141 expression was 5.27 times higher in tumor samples than non-cancerous samples. Additionally, the RR (Relative risk) and OR (Odds ratio) were 1.83 (95%CI = 1.2576-2.6675, p = 0.0016) and 4.95 (95%CI = 1.4625-16.7541, p = 0.01), respectively. In conclusion, miR-141 was up-regulated in the biopsy samples and thus may be a potential biomarker for NPC in the Vietnamese population.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The overall goal is to reduce the prevalence of vitamin and mineral deficiencies including vitamin A, iron and zinc deficiencies. The project will continue its efforts to prevent the population from falling back into deficiency. Over the project, 4 type of fortified food are produced: soya sauce, fish sauce, vegetable oil and flavoring powders for >55 million people (50% of the total population) throug >20 manufacturers Methods: Micronutrient deficiency is public health problem in Vietnam. Iron status has improved but a large part of the population continues to be deficient for zinc and vitamin A or has a marginal status for all the bio-indicators tested. With the support of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Vietnam began to fortify fish sauce in 2005, following studies showed the positive impact of fish sauce fortification. The second phase of the four year projects subsidizes fortificant for the producers over one year in Vietnam; provides technical support in the area of production and standards to get mandatory fortification in place. Results: 16 food producers signed a commitment to join in the project. Vitamin A-fortified oil, vitamin A-fortified granules, iron fortified fish sauce, iron-fortified soya sauce are introduced to Vietnam consumers. Fortification legislation is developed and revised by the government. The food law contains an article on fortification which stipulates that micronutrient fortification is mandatory if it can be shown the corresponding deficiency constitute a public health problem. Conclusions: The project begun in 9/2011 and be concluded in 10/2015.

ABSTRACT

Neurolymphomatosis is a rare manifestation of non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by infiltration of peripheral nerves, nerve roots, plexus and cranial nerves by malignant lymphocytes. This report presents positron emission tomography/computed tomography [PET/CT]imaging with 2-deoxy-2-18F-fluoro-D-glucose [18F-FDG] in 3 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with nerve infiltration, including one newly diagnosed lymphoma, one recurrent lymphoma in previous nerve lesions and one newly recurrent lymphoma. PET/CT could reveal the affected neural structures including cranial nerves, spinal nerve roots, brachial plexus, cervicothoracic ganglion, intercostal nerves, branches of the vagus nerve, lumbosacral plexus and sciatic nerves. There was relative concordance between PET/CT and MRI in detection of affected cranial nerves. PET/CT seemed to be better than MRI in detection of affected peripheral nerves. 18F-FDG PET/CT was a whole-body imaging technique with the ability to reveal the affected cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots and plexus in non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A thorough understanding of disease and use of advanced imaging modalities will increasingly detect neurolymphomatosis

ABSTRACT

Health status of 1288 employees working at 9 paint, rubber, paper and and processing wood factories where chemicals were used in production in Ha Noi, Hai Phong and Da Nang was investigated. 93.9% of these workers exposure to chemicals. 72.2% to poison gas. 50% of factories had chemical level higher than allowed standards. 83.3% workers had chemical poison signs in 2 months previous. 54.8% had diseases related to using chemical. Rate of workers had been ill in year 2000 in these factories was 34.4%. Among them, 97.3% exposure directly with chemicals. Chemical-related disease prevalence was 89.6%. 44.4% factories did not hold health examination for employees

ABSTRACT

A 51 year old female with left breast carcinoma underwnet mastectomy, radiotherapy and has had chemotherapy for two years. Chest X-ray (CXR) film showed the linear pattern in the peripheri of both lungs. High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images defined reticulo-nodullar opacities in lower zone of the lung bilaterally consistant with pulmonary lymphangitic carcinomatosis. In summary, HRCT of the lung is a modality can define and characterize difuse lung lesions, in particularly, pulmonary lymphangitic carcinomatosis.
