ABSTRACT

To determine the relationships between age, sex, and the presence of gallstones with the anatomic distribution and frequency of epithelial pathologic changes. A clinicopathological study of non-selected, consecutively received cholecystectomy specimens. The study was conducted at AL-Zahrawi Teaching Hospital in the Department of Pathology, College of Medicine, University of Mosul, during the period from November 1, 2000 to September 30, 2001. 130 cholecystectomy specimens were examined for the presence or absence of epithelial pathological changes consisting of hyperplasia, metaplasia, and dysplasia. The histological sections in which metaplasia was found were stained with periodic acid - schiff -alcian blue at pH of 2.5. Sections in which dysplasia was found were immunohistochemically stained for carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA]. 85% of patients were females and 15% were males, a male: female ratio of 1:5.5. The peak distribution of age was in the 5[th] decade for both males and females. Epithelial lesions were found in 55.3% of cases. Gastric metaplasia was found in 34.6%, intestinal metaplasia in 30%, hyperplasia in 26.2%, and dysplasia in 3%. The epithelial lesions increased in frequency with age, and more frequently found in females than males and occurred predominantly in the fundus. A significant association [P< 0.05] was found between intestinal metaplasia and epithelial dysplasia and between the presence of gall stones and epithelial lesions. These findings suggest that cholelithiasis and cholecystitis produce a series of epithelial pathological changes occurring primarily in the fundus that increase in frequency with advancing age

ABSTRACT

Adult male rats were exposed to cigarette smoke [2x/day/6 wks] in locally prepared chamber with an objective to study the effect of daily smoke exposure on body weight gain and possible epithelial changes encountered in the respiratory air-ways in conjunction with oral intake of 300 IU [2x/wK/6wK] of retinol palmitate. The exposure to cigarette smoke caused a significant [P<0.01] decrease in body weight gain relative to sham exposed animals, while the oral retionl intake had improved the gain over sham-treated. Analysis of serum retinol levels revealed a significant [P<0.001] decrease in the smoke-exposed rats relative to sham exposed rats. The epithelial changes of the larynx were the most prominent changes of the respiratory airways which varied from pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelia to squamous metaplasia in the smoke-exposed rats while in those supplemented with the retinol, the laryngeal epithelia was nearly that of the sham-exposed and there was no sign of squamous metaplasia. Apparently, the retinol supplementation during cigarette smoke exposure might had a prophylactic role in human against unwanted cellular changes of the respiratory airways

ABSTRACT

A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma [Plasma cell neoplasam] of the submandibular lymph node in a 54 years old male is presented. There was no lesion in the oral cavity and in the upper respiratory tract. Combined chemotherapy and radiation resulted in a remission, which lasted seven months. However, at the end of the seven months the patient presented again, in a state of semicoma with a clinical picture consistent with widespread involvement of the Central Nervous System and the patient succumbed two days after admission to hospital

ABSTRACT

A case of toxoplasmic lymphadenopathy is described in which the diagnosis was unsuspected clinically and it has been suggested histopathologically and confirmed serologically. The clinical and pathological aspects of toxoplasmic lymphadenitis are briefly reviewed

ABSTRACT

Human hydatid disease is endemic in Mosul, and it forms a. major health problem. In this paper I have evaluated the human hydatid diseases in a retrospective study particularly covering age and sex distribution with organ involvement. The epidemiology and measures for prevention and control of the disease have been described
