ABSTRACT

Objective@#To analyze the specific effects of different education methods on AIDS in colleges of ethnic minority areas, and explore effective ways to carry out AIDS education in colleges of ethnic minority areas.@*Methods@#A baseline survey was conducted among 3 000 ethnic freshmen in a university in Guangxi. Different AIDS education methods (traditional education group, peer education group, situational role-playing group) were implemented according to the different distribution of the campus(traditional education group, peer education group and situational role-playing group). The awareness rates of basic AIDS knowledge, AIDS prevention knowledge and the positive selection rate of AIDS-related attitude of the three groups of students before and after intervention were statistically analyzed.@*Results@#Before intervention, there was no significant difference in the awareness rate of basic AIDS knowledge, AIDS prevention knowledge and positive selection rate of AIDS-related attitudes among traditional education group, peer education group and situational role-playing group(χ2=0.19,1.59,0.80,P>0.05). After intervention, the awareness rate of basic AIDS knowledge, AIDS prevention knowledge and positive selection rate of AIDS-related attitudes among the three groups were not significant(P<0.05). The awareness rate of basic AIDS knowledge, AIDS prevention knowledge and positive selection rate of AIDS-related attitudes in peer education group and situational role-playing group were significantly higher than those in traditional education group(χ2=47.51,22.26,90.83,P<0.05), the awareness rate of basic AIDS knowledge and the positive selection rate of AIDS-related attitudes in situational role-playing group was significantly higher than that in peer education group.@*Conclusion@#The awareness rate of AIDS knowledge among ethnic minority students in college in Guangxi is still at a low level. Traditional education, peer education and situational role-playing education can effectively improve the awareness of AIDS among ethnic minority students, and situational role-playing education is more effective.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to clarify the smoking cessation motivations, challenges and coping strategies among pregnant couples.A qualitative design using a grounded theory approach was applied.Data were collected by individual semi-structured interviews with 39 married individuals (21 non-smoking pregnant women and 18 smoking or ever-smoking men with a pregnant wife) and 3 imams in an ethnically diverse region of far westem China. The most common theme for smoking cessation motivation was "embryo quality" (i.e.,a healthier baby),followed by family's health. Most interviewees reported that husband's withdrawal symptoms were the greatest challenge to smoking cessation, followed by the Chinese tobacco culture.Coping strategies given by the pregnant women typically involved combining emotional, behavioral and social interventions.Social interventions showed advantages in helping to quit smoking.Pregnancy appears to be a positive stimulus for pregnant couples' smoking cessation. Our results suggest that pregnancy,a highly important life event, may help to reduce barriers to smoking cessation at the social level (e.g.,limiting access to cigarettes, avoiding temptation to smoke),but does little to help with the withdrawal symptoms.Professional guidance for smoking cessation is still necessary.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the protective effects of olvanil on sulfur mustard (SM)-induced cutaneous injury. Methods: To establish mouse ear model of SM-induced cutaneous injury, KM mice right ears were exposed to 5 μl of 32 g/L or 128 g/LSM, respectively. Then we evaluated the protective effect of olvanil against SM-induced cutaneous injury with these two concentrations. For mice exposed to 32 g/L SM, olvanil (0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 mg/ear, topically) or indometacin (indomethacin, 10 mg/kg, po) were administrated 20 min or 30 min before SM exposure, respectively. After 24 h SM exposure, ear tissue was harvested and weighted, and the histopathological analysis was conducted. Similarly, for mice exposed to 128 g/L SM, olvanil (0.25 mg/ear, topically) or indomethacin (10 mg/kg, po) were administrated, and ear tissue was harvested and weighted. Results: Olvanil significantly inhibited 32 g/L SM-induced ear edema, cutaneous inflammation and necrosis, while no influence were observed on 128 g/L SM-induced cutaneous injury. Conclusion: Olvanil shows remarkable protective effect on cutaneous injury induced by SM of low concentration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the effect of the oxidored nitro domain containing protein 1 (NOR1) gene knockdown on the biological behavior of HeLa cells in cervical carcinoma.@*METHODS@#The recombinant plasmids pSUPER-shNOR1-1, pSUPER-shNOR1-2 and pSUPERscramble, which targeted to NOR1 gene, were constructed by pSUPER.neo+GFP vector, transfected into HeLa cells respectively using Lipofectamine 2000 reagent, and followed by G418 selection. The expression level of NOR1 mRNA and protein were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay was performed to determine the growth curve of cell viability. The stable transfectants were treated with H₂O₂ and cell apoptosis was determined by Hoechst 33258 staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferasemediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. The expression levels of Bcl-2, cleaved caspase 9 and poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) were measured by Western blot.@*RESULTS@#NOR1- knockdown HeLa cells were successfully constructed by transfection of pSUPER-shNOR1-1 or pSUPER-shNOR1-2 plasmids into HeLa cells. MTT assay showed that the silence of endogenous NOR1 in HeLa cells could lead to the increase in cell viability and proliferation, and the inhibition of H₂O₂-induced apoptosis compared with the negative control. Western blot showed that the expression level of active caspase 9 and cleaved PARP was inhibited in NOR1-knockdown cells when they were treated with H₂O₂ while the expression level of Bcl-2 protein increased.@*CONCLUSION@#Silence of endogenous NOR1 facilitates the cell viability and growth of HeLa cells, and attenuates HeLa cells apoptosis induced by H₂O₂, which might be mediated by up-regulation of Bcl-2 level and down-regulation of the cleaved caspase 9 cascade.
