ABSTRACT

Glibenclamide [Daonil R] is one of the sulphonylureas used for lowering the blood glucose level of the non-insulin dependent diabetics. In this study Glibenclamide was tried in both mice and 'healthy' underweight patients to increase weight. There was a statistically significant weight gain in the experimental animals together with an increase in weight of eight out of nine patients treated, and the gain in weight in five patients [treated for 8 weeks] was highly significant. With the exception of one patient, there were no serious side effects recorded. This effect of Glibenclamide is thought to be due to its insulinogenic effect and augmentation of the cellular insulin binding. These results are considered encouraging and need further studies and investigations

ABSTRACT

Thirty patient with Cushing's syndrome were studied, clinically they resembled patients reported elsewhere except in the type of obesity, all our patients had trunccal obesity, non had generalized obesity. They ranged in age from 10-45 years with a female preponderance of 2.75/1. Polycythemia were not encountered, but hypernatremia was prominent. A.C.T.H. and cortisol radio immuno-assay were more helpful than the 8mg dexamethasone suppression test in differentiating bilateral adrenal hyperplasia from adenoma

ABSTRACT

Thirty-one patients presented with hirsutism have been studied; three patients were found to have specific endocrine disease and were treated accordingly. Nine patients found to have polycystic ovaries were treated by Clopiphene Citrate and nineteen patients found to have normal ovaries and endocrine functions were treated by Dexamethasone and Ethinyl estradiolum for 6-10 monts. From our results we conclude that; Clomiphene Citrate did not show any effect on hirsutism in patients with polycystic ovaries, and that the combined adrenal and ovarian suppression is useful for patients with moderate hirsutism and regular menstrual cycle
