ABSTRACT

Theeffectsoflabetalol [trandate], pindolol with clopamide [viskaldex] and methyldopa [aldomet] on maternal blood pressure in cases of pregnancy induced hypertension [PIH] were studied in 24 patients in late trimester of pregnancy. The patients were divided into three equal groups [eight patients each]. The first group [group I] received Trandate, the second group [group II] received viskaldex and the third group [group III] received aldomet. The effect of treatment on blood pressure and laboratory findings were followed until delivery. It was found that trandate was effective in lowering blood pressure in all cases with mild and severe PIH after three, seven days and during the following period. viskaldex was effective in treating all cases suffering from mild PIH. However, it was less effective in the management of cases with severe PIH. As regards aldomet, it was effective in lowering the blood pressure in all cases with mild PIH.In patients with severe PIH, blood pressure was lowered after seven days of therapy. In the duration thereafter, the mean arterial blood pressure returned to the pretreatment level in spite of the continuation of drug administration

ABSTRACT

Twenty-four women with pregnancy induced hypertension [PIH] presenting to Al-Azhar University Hospital in the last trimester of pregnancy were divided into three equal groups. Each group received therapeutic doses of a hypotensive drug [labetalol, pindolol with clopamide and alpha methyldopa]. The effect of these drugs was studied during the intrapartumperiodandthe results were compared with eight normosensitive patients during labor [control group]. No significant change in fetal heart rate [FHR] could be attributed to the drug administrated in case of labetalol alpha methyldopa. As regards pindolol with clopamide, a significant change in long term variability was observed in patients suffering from sever PIH. The pHof fetal blood samples taken from the umbilical cord [UC] did not correlate with maternal pH in patients who received pindolol with clopamide
