ABSTRACT

Adjustable sutures increased the rate of success with a single procedure, but sometimes fails because of changes in the angle of deviation which develops a few days after surgery. Therefore, the delayed adjustment was attempted;however, the postoperative adhesion following strabismus surgery make delayed adjustment impossible. We studied 45 eyes of 25 rabbits; adjustable strabismus surgery underwent a hang-back technique in the superior rectus muscle. In experimental group, a sponge was soaked in 5-Fluorouracil, and the sponge was placed between the conjunctiva and the sclera for 5 minutes during the operation. We studied the possible time of delayed adjustment and estimated the minimal forces required for the adjustment. The experimental group A (5-Fluorouracil, 50mg/ml) allowed for a 6 day delayed adjustment after surgery, control group allowed for a 2 day delayed adjustment after surgery. These results suggest that 5-Fluorouracil may valuable resource to delayed adjustment strabismus surgery by reduce postoperative adhesion.

ABSTRACT

MIN GLASSES is specially manufactured in order to enhance satisfaction of wearer and therefore increase the effectiveness of treatment of an amblyopia and a diplopia. One of the lens is specially grounded and coated to blur vision. Cosmetically, the eye appears to wear regular glasses through the blur lens. We prospectively studied 58 amblyopic children and 10 diplopic adults. Each patient was treated with MIN GLASSES for cosmetic problems. We checked linear visual acuity of pre- and post-treatment. Questionnaires were given to the patients and parents regarding cosmetic satisfaction with treatment. In amblyopic children. 44 patients(75.9%) showed visual acuity improvement of 1.61 +/- 1.50 lines by Han's visual acuity chart. Patient compliance was 87.9%(51 patients) with patient satisfaction based on a questionnaire response. Parents were 87.9%(51 parents) positive response. In diplopic adults, 10 patients(100%) were positive response with satisfaction and demonstrated to be free of symptom of diplopia. MIN GLASSES is effective in high compliance satisfaction of amblyopia and diplopia, and improvement of visual acuity of amblyopia.

ABSTRACT

An infant presented with persistent epiphora after successful probing of the lacrimal system. Examination of the nose showed a cystic structure occluding lower portion of the lacrimal drainage system. In cases of recurrent obstruction, nasal examination and endoscopic marsupialization may help guide the clinician towards the most appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

In adjustable strabismus surgery, a satisfactory final result would be achieved with delayed adjustment. However, the postoperative adhesions following strabismus surgery make delayed adjustment impossible. We evaluated the efficacy of mitomycin C in reducing the severity of postoperative adhesions following strabismus surgery and in delaying the time adjustment after surgery. Experimental rabbits underwent a hang-back recession procedure in the superior rectus muscle. A topical application of mitomycin C was made between the conjunctiva and the sclera for 5 minutes during the operation. We then studied the possible time of delayed adjustment and estimated the minimal forces required for the adjustment. The topical application of 0.1 mg/ml mitomycin C between the conjunctiva and sclera allowed for a 2-week delayed adjustment after surgery, and 0.2 mg/ml mitomycin C prevented the adhesions between these tissues and the muscle 5 weeks after surgery. These results suggest that topical mitomycin C may enhance the success rate of strabismus surgery with delayed adjustment and reduce postoperative adhesions.

ABSTRACT

We performed the intravitreal injection of air and pure perfluoropropane(C3F8) gas in the pigmented rabbits and observed the changes of gas levels by the ultrasonography. We also observed the changes of the intra-ocular gas levels by the ultrasonography and measured the intraocular pressures(IOPs) in 9 patients who had undergone vitrectomy and fluid-gas exchange with 20% sulfur hexafluoride(SF6) and 14% perfluoropropane(C3F8) gases. In the pigmented rabbits, the air was not expanded and completely absorbed within 2 days, and the C3F8 gas was expanded maximally at 3 to 7 days and completely absorbed after 3 weeks. Among nine human eyes treated with vitrectomy and fluid-gas exchange, the intraocular pressures were elevated above 25mmHg at 1 day after operation in 2 eyes, which were controlled with medical therapy. The lOPs were significantly correlated with the amount of the intraocular gases(r=0.3476, p<0.05). The assessment of intraocular gas level by ultrasonography seems to be easier and more objective method than others previously reported.

ABSTRACT

We did clinical analysis of 72 patients with branched retinal vein occlusion, who were diagnosed by indirect opthalmoscope and fluorescein angiography and treated with laser photocoagulatlon from Jan, 198l to May, l990. The results were as follows; 1. Final visual acuity has a Significant statistical correlation with macular edema in terma of 'quadrant area' 2. We were unable to demonstrate any statistical correlation between final visual acuity and the following factors: degree of nonperfusion, neovascularization type of laser photocoagulatlon, duration of symptoms before laser photocoagulation.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the relationship between the watching television and myopia, 301 middle school students of different school grade and sex were given questionnaires of the average television watching period per a day and examined the degree of myopia by the manifest refraction. The results showed that no statistically significant correlation existed between the degree of myopia and the television watching period, however the degree of myopia progresses with advancing school grade. From this results, we concluded that the usual television watching is not related to the degree of myopic refractive changes.

ABSTRACT

An animal experiment was done to evaluate the efficacy of tissue coating with sodium hyaluronic acid and subconjunctival injection of triamcinolone acetate in reducing the severity of postoperative adhesions following strabismus surgery. Experimental animals underwent a mild traumatic surgical procedure in one superior rectus muscle and a severe traumatic surgical procedure in the other superior rectus muscle. Each group was divided into control group, sodium hyaluronate coating group and triamcinolone acetonide injection group. Grading the severity of adhesions through surgical exploration of operative sites and histological comparison after 4 weeks revealed a significant reduction of postoperative adhesions in sodium hyaluronate group compared with control group under conditions of severe surgical trauma. But triamcinolone groups have no significant differences compared with control groups by statistical analysis. Tissue protection afforded by sodium hyaluronate may lead to an effective method which minimizes the surgical trauma to the tissues and reduces the postsurgical adhesions following strabismus surgery.

ABSTRACT

To identify the cellular components of proliferative vitreoretinal membranes. 11 proliferative vitreoretinal membranes which were surgically obtained from 7 eyes with proliferative vitreo retinopathy (PVR) and 4 eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) were stained with monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin, glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP), or vimentin using immunoperoxidase technique (ABC method). In PVR membranes, mean cell positivities for cytokeratin, GFAP and vimentin were 48%, 1% and 92%, respectively and in PDR membranes, 0%, 5% and 93%, respectively. The above results suggest that retinal pigment epithelial celIs and fibroblasts are major cellular components of PVR membranes, and mesenchymal cells are major cellular components and glial cells minor cellular components of PDR membranes.

ABSTRACT

We have investigated the therapeutic effectiveness of T-lens(Soflens(R)) in 105 patients(110 eyes) with various corneal diseases. The results are as follows: 1. Cornea diseases, which revealed the good therapeutic effectiveness, are ccrneal perforation, postoperative uses, corneal ulcer, corneal erosion, and corneal edema. 2. Corneal disease, which revealed the rapid therapeutic effectiveness, is corneal edema. 3. Corneal diseases, which revealed no response, are neuroparalytic keratitis and radiation keratitis.

ABSTRACT

We performed Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test in pseudophakic eyes and phakic eyes to detect the abnormal color perception suggested in pseudophakic eyes compared with phakic eyes. But there were no significant differences in total error scores and mean error scores at four individual boxes between two groups. The results suggest that there were no differences in color perception between pseudophakic and phakic eyes by Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test.

ABSTRACT

Bacteriologic factors, such as enzymes and toxins produced by microbes, are one of diverse etiologic factors in dry eye syndrome. We investigated the conjunctival bacterial flora in dry eye patients and compared the results between dry eye patients and normal persons. There were no differences in bacterial flora between the two groups.

ABSTRACT

A histologic study was performed if fibroblast proliferation could be inhibited in rab bits by deli very of bleomycin(1.35mg), an antineoplastic antibiotics, in a collagen sponge implant. Results showed that fibroblast proliferation was markedly inhibited and bleb longevity was prolonged when compared to controls. And inflammatory cell infiltration was noted around filtration wound.

ABSTRACT

The corneal curvatures after circumferential scleral resection were increased in the corneal meridian of scleral resection and were decreased in the corneal meridian perpendicular to scleral resection. After meridional scleral resection, the results of corneal curvature changes were opposite to those of circumferential scleral resection. The changes of corneal curvature were decreased with time.
