ABSTRACT

Background@#Sexual dimorphism is important for sex determination in the field of forensics. However, sexual dimorphism is commonly assessed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) rather than three-dimensional (3D) modeling software; therefore, studies using a more accurate measurement approach are necessary. This study assessed the sexual dimorphism of the MS using a 3D modeling program to obtain information that could contribute to the fields of surgery and forensics. @*Methods@#The CBCT data of 60 patients (age, 20∼29 y; 30 males and 30 females) admitted to the Department of Orthodontics at the Dankook University School of Dentistry were provided in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format. The left MS and right MS were modeled based on the DICOM files using the Mimics (version 22; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) 3D program and converted to stereolithography (STL) files used to measure the width, length, and height of the MS, infraorbital foramen (IOF), right MS, and left MS. The average of three repeated measurements was calculated, and a reliability test was performed to ensure data reliability (Cronbach’s α =0.618). A canonical discriminant analysis was performed using a standard approach (left: Box’s M=0.096; right: Box’s M=0.115). @*Results@#Males had greater values for all parameters (MS width, MS length, MS height, IOF, right MS, left MS) than females. The discriminant analysis identified six independent variables (MS width, MS height, MS length, IOF, right MS, left MS) that could identify sex. The left MS and right MS correctly identified the sex of 81.7% and 71.7% of the patients, respectively, with the left MS having higher accuracy. @*Conclusion@#This study confirmed that, for Korean individuals, the left MS has a better ability to identify sex than the right MS. These results may contribute to sex identification in the fields of surgery and forensics.

ABSTRACT

CD40-CD40L-mediated help from CD4 T cells is essential to induce primary CD8 T cell responses specific to the non-inflammatory cell-based antigen H60. In this study, using H60 as a model antigen, we generated recombinant vaccinia viruses (rVVs) expressing the H60 CD8 epitope and investigated whether CD4 help was required to activate the CD8 T cell response specific to the virally expressed H60. The immune response after infection with rVVs expressing H60 was similar to that after immunization with H60 congenic splenocytes, with a peak frequency of H60-specific CD8 T cells detected in the blood on day 10 post-infection. A CD8 T cell response specific for virally derived H60 was not induced in CD4-depleted mice, but was in CD40-deficient mice. These results provide insights into the characterization of the CD8 T cell response specifically for antigens originating from cellular sources compared to viral sources.

ABSTRACT

We experienced an atypical case of sebaceous gland hyperplssis in a 28-year old male. He had asymptomatic, multiple, globoid, yellowish papules in a zosteriform distribution on the right lower abdomen (T8 dermatome) that were of 5 years duration. Histologically, there are many hyperplastic lobules of sebaceous glands, some of which are connected with a central dilated duct.

ABSTRACT

The effect of long-term topical application of corticosteroids on rat cutaneous mast cells was examined under the light microscopy. Two potent corticosteroids, 0.05% clobetasol-17-propionate and 0.25% desoxymethasone, produced a remarkable decresse greater than 50% of pretreatment mast cell number by two weeks. Wheress a less potent corticosteroid, 0.1% hydrocotisone-17-valerate, produced a remarkable decrease greater than 50% of pretreatment mast cell number by four weeks. All corticosteroids produced a remarkable decrease greater than 80% of pretreatment mast cell number by six weeks. These results suggest that long-term topical application of corticosteroids may have the deleterious effects on cutsneous mast cells.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of pityriasis rotunda occurring in a patient with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The patient was a 64-year old female who had a pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The skin lesions were asymptomatic, multiple, various sized (1 to 15cm in diameter), isolated or confluent and finely scaly light brownish to grayish colored patches on the lower abdomen, back and thigh. Histopathologic findings shawed mild hyperkeratosis, atrophy, loss of granular layer, increased melanin pigments in basal layer of the epidermis and mild perivascular monocytic infiltration in the upper dermis.

ABSTRACT

A 13-year-old male presented a single, elevated, oval, walnut sized, soft mass on the left retroauricular ares which has increased in size since birth, Histopathologic examination revealed a cyst in the subcutaneus area. Cyst wall is lined by normal epiderrnis and cyst cavity contains hairs and keratinous materials.

ABSTRACT

Trichloroethylene is a very common chemical used principally as a solvent and a degreasing agent in industry, We have experienced a case of toxic erythema, toxic hepatitis, and subsequent exfoliative dermatitis possibly due to trichloroethylene in a 23-year-old male. He had dealed with a cleaning process with trichloroethylene in a factory of stainless steel materials. We report our case with the review of the toxicity of trichoroethylene.
