ABSTRACT

The synchronous electromyography of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles (sternohyoid muscle, sternothyroid muscle and thyrohyoid muscle) and thyroarytenoid muscle of dogs was analyzed in this study. The result showed that the electrical activity of the thyrohyoid muscle were synchronous to that of the thyroaryienoid muscle during quiet respiration, deep inspiration, phonation and swallowing. The discharge of the sternohyoid muscle was recorded during expiration and phonation. The electrical activity of the sternothyroid muscle was also recorded during inspiration and phonation, and was increased during deep inspiration. The study suggests that reinnervation of the thyroarytenoid muscle from thyrohyoid branch of the ansa cervicalis for functional rehabilitation could fit well the physiological characteristic of the larynx.

ABSTRACT

The recurrent laryngeal nerves of 16 dogs were sectioned to paralyze the vocal cord on the left side. The ansa hypoglossi nerve was cut on the same side, its proximal end was implanted into the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle belly on the left side in six animals. It was anastomosed with the adductor branch of the recurrent larygeal nerve on the left side in five animals and the other five didn't receive reinnervated operations. After a period of five to six months, the operated areas were reexplored. The excitability values of the implanted nerve, anastomosed proximal and distal nerves, right recurrent laryngeal nerve, normal TA muscle, reinnervated TA muscle and denervated TA muscle were tested respectively in 16 dogs. The results indicated that the excitability values of the implanted and anastomosed nerves were equivalent to those of the normal nerves and were significantly higher than those of the reinnervated muscle which were equivalent to those of the normal muscle. The excitability values of the denervated TA muscles were lowest.

ABSTRACT

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of the normal nasal mucosa, nasal polyps, inverted papillomas and papillary adenocarcinomas were analyzed by Avidin Biotin-Peroxidase Complextechnique for the demonstration of lectin receptors including peanut agglutinin (PNA), concanavalin ensifomis agglutinin (ConA),ulex europeaus agglutinin-I (UEA-1), sophora japonica agglutinin (SJA), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and keratin.lt was found that the distribution of PNA and UEA-I receptors was related to the degree of differentiation, dysplasia or malignant transformation of the nasal mucosa. The quantity of ConA receptors was increased with the degree of transformation of the nasal mucosal cells. There were many kinds of lectin receptors on the surface of one kind of cells. Lectin histochemistry was more economical, convenient, rapid and sensitive than immunohistochemistry. So, lectin histochemistry can be used to examine the degree of differentiation, dysplasia and malignant transformation of nasal neoplastic cells, providing objective index for clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

ABSTRACT

23 cases with tympanic membrane perforation were successfully treated with heterogenous tissue grafting. In six cases, the underlay grafting method was used, and the outlay method was in 6 cases. After operation, all perforations were nicely healed up.The graft tissue used is the waste product in manufacturing cat-gut unqualified for regular suturing.Segments of this cat-gut purified and chromified, whitish in colour, and tape-like in shape were used. Each segment measured 1 or 1.5 cm in width proved a little too thin, and should be double-folded or triple-folded.A segment of cat-gut sectioned and examined under the microscope, was found to contain nothing else than plenty of collagen fibers .Cat-gut could be kept in 75% alcohol under room temperature. From our limited experience, it seems to be a very -useful grafting material in ear surgery and worthy of further trial and observation. To our knowledge no similar report has been noticed in current medical literatures.
