ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the role of Ca~(2+) in the mechanism of ischemic preconditioning effects. Methods Fifty Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 5 groups randomly:IC group, ischemic control,IP group, ischemia followed by reperfusion;IP+Verapamil group,Bay k8644 group,Verapamil group. Results Siginificant heart functional recovery was observed in IP group as campared with that in IC group(P

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the influence of intraoperative implantation of radioactive (125)I seeds on healing of surgical anastomosis.

METHODSThe jejunum was cut, and end-to-end anastomosis was made in 12 healthy dogs. In the experimental group (n = 8), the (125)I seeds were implanted into the two sides of the anastomosis. The total radiation dosage at the anastomosis was 116 Gy. The other 4 dogs were in the included control group. At the 7th, 14th postoperative day, specimens were obtained from 4 dogs in the experimental group and 2 dogs in the control group respectively. The healing of the anastomosis was observed grossly; hydroxyproline content, as well as histopathological and ultrastructural changes of the anastomotic tissue were studied.

RESULTSGross observation showed healing of the anastomosis of the experimental animals. The hydroxyproline contents were 0.578 +/- 0.020 microg/mg proteins in the experimental group and 0.631 +/- 0.012 microg/mg proteins in the control group (P > 0.05). Histopathological and ultrastructural changes of the anastomotic tissue were not significant in healing as compared to the control group. One of 29 patients had anastomotic leakage.

CONCLUSIONSIntraoperative implantation of (125)I has no adverse effect on healing of surgical anastomosis; it is safe and feasible in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the method and effect of the combination treatment based on the minimally invasive surgery and radioactive seeds brachytherapy for lung cancer. Methods Entered the study there were 12 cases of lung cancer (4 cases of primary lung cancer, 3 cases of recurrent lung cancer, and 5 cases of metastatic lung cancer) between November 2001 and February 2002. All the 12 patients received thoracoscopic mini operations, including 5 cases of local wedge-shaped tumor resection combined with seeds implantation, 3 cases of radio frequency thermaerotherapy combined with seeds implantation, 3 cases of percutaneous radio frequency with seeds implantation, and 1 case of seeds implantation only. Postoperative combination treatment was conducted in accordance with the patient's general condition. Results All the patients were followed for (12~30) months. The local control rate in the study was 83%, and the survival time was more than 1 year. Two patients expired in the 18th and 21st postoperative months, respectively. No decreases of the white blood cell and platelet took place. Conclusions The combination treatment based on minimally invasive surgery and radioactive seeds brachytherapy provides high local control rate, high life quality and satisfactory survival time.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the expression of osteopontin(OPN) mRNA in breast tissues containing microcalcifications and the significance of OPN in tumor pathogenesis and metastasis of breast cancer. Methods The expression of OPNmRNA in 128 samples of tissues of breast lesions and adjacent breast tissues and 9 samples of metastatic lymph nodes were examined. Results The expression of OPNmRNA was highest in(calcified) foci of breast cancer tissues and in metastatic lynph nodes, lower in calcified foci of benign breast tissues and lowest in breast tissues adjacent to breast cancer and in benign tissues without calcification. The differences between the defferent tissues were significant(all P
