ABSTRACT

Aims: This study aimed to assess the levels of dental anxiety among dental, medical, and pharmacy students at AL Quds University and to find out the sources of dental fear among them. Study Design: Retrospective study. Place and Duration of Study: AL Quds University, between June, 2012-July, 2013. Methodology: Dental anxiety scale (DAS) and Dental Fear Survey (DFS) were completed by four hundred and five students (113 males and 292 females). The population included undergraduate dental (n=198), medical (n=114) and pharmacy students (n=93). Ages ranged from 18 to 27 (the mean age of the subjects was 22.5±2.1 years). Results: Dental students were significantly less anxious (using the dental anxiety scale) compared to the other groups (medical and pharmacy students) (P<0.05). Dental students were significantly more relaxed in the dental treatment as assessed by DFS than other groups (medical and pharmacy students (P<0.05)). Fear of seeing the anesthetic needle (39.2%) and feeling the needle injection (46.2%) were the most common sources of dental fear reactions among the study population. The Pearson correlations (rp) between the measurements DAS and DFS mean scores were evaluated and the correlation is significant (P<0.05). Conclusions: Dental students have a significantly lower level of dental anxiety than medical and pharmacy students. Females showed higher fear scores than males. Seeing the anesthetic needles and feeling the anesthetic solutions injection were the major stimuli of dental fear.

ABSTRACT

Primary extrahepatic hydatid cysts are rare, and primary splenic hydatid cysts even more so, constituting 2% to 3.5% of all hydatid cysts. We report here a case series of isolated splenic hydatid cysts. Case records of 382 adult patients of abdominal hydatid cysts were analyzed; eight of them (2%; aged 23 to 45 years, 5 women and 3 men) had primary splenic hydatid cysts. Seven patients presented with dull dragging pain in the left hypochondrium. Four patients had splenomegaly. Diagnosis was made at ultrasonography and/or contrast-enhanced computed tomography. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for hydatid antibodies tested positive in all patients. One patient presented with hemoperitoneum. All patients underwent splenectomy. Primary splenic hydatid cyst is rare but should be considered in patients with cystic lesions of the spleen.

ABSTRACT

To detect difference in anthropometric measurements [weight - Length and Head circumference] between full term newborn infants of Egyptian healthy mothers versus infants of non - Egyptian healthy mothers in Hurghada city, Egypt. There is higher statistically significant in anthropometric meagerments [weight, height, head circumference] among newborns of foreign mothers [European] than those of Egyptian mothers [African] due to intermarriage among individuals belonging to different ethnic groups

ABSTRACT

The kidney is very sensitive to oxygen deprivation, within few hours of an ischemic episode renal insufficiency will occur. The condition is reversible but prolonged renal insufficiency will cause renal damage with irreversible cortical or modularly necrosis [Groshong et al, 1991] ischemia is one of the major causes of renal failure [Rudolph, 1989]. In the study by Alejandro et al. [1999] 57% of infants with perinatal asphyxia developed acute renal failure. To study the effect of perinatal asphyxia on kidney function of full term newborn . 30 asphyxiated FT newborn and 15 control were subjected to comprehensive history and renal function evaluation study. Routine urinalysis-of cases, with perinatal hypoxia revealed proteinuria in 41.7% in patients. Many epithelial cells were found in 53.5% of the . cases with perinatal asphyxia. Mean urine analysis for R.B.Cs of patients [6.33 RBCs/HPF +/- 4.02 RBCs/HPF]' which was significantly higher than that of controls [4.16 RBCs/HPF +/- 2.69 RBCs/HPF]. Mean urine analysis for pus cells of patients [2.84 pus cells/HPF +/- 1.59 pus cells/HPF] which was not significantly different than that of controls [3.08 pus cells/HPF 4-3.87 pus cells/HPF]. Mean urinary 82 micro globulin concentration in patients [218.30 ng/ml +/- 100.93 ng/ml] was significantly higher than that of controls [144.316 ng/ml +/- 126.3 nglml] which is specific for tubular renal insult in renal impairment. Mean urinary urea in patients was [7.727 +3.16 meq/1] which was not significant in relation to controls 96.80 +2.907 meq/ 1]. Mean urinary creatinine in patients was [1.30 +1.4 meq/1] whjch was not significantly different than controls [1.22 +1.09 meq/1]. Elevated serum creatinine and urinary 82 microglobulin concentration, were detected in cases of perinatal asphyxia so in any hypoxic newborn infant. An early assessment of serum creatinine and 82 microglobulin in urine should be performed in every newborn with asphyxia

ABSTRACT

Objectives and important to report a case of congenital T-ceIl immunodeficiency with post BCG vaccination systemic TB infection. clinical presentation 6 months old infant presented by respiratory symptoms, light coma, FTT and HSM. Initial investigation CXR showed miliary opacities in both lungs, abdominal U/S showed hepatosplenomegally [HSM] with homogenous echogenicity. CT brain W out contrast showed ventricular dilatation and encephalomalacia and brain distortion, immunological study showed total immunoglobins and IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, IgE were within normal range. T-lymphocytes showed decrease in total lymphocytes and decease in T4 [T-helper] T8 [T-suppressor] NK [Natural killer] suggests T-cell immunodeficiency. CBC showed microcytic hypochromic anemia[HB 8.5gm/dl] anemia of chronic illness, Screening for IIIV infection negative

ABSTRACT

In our study, we found statistical significant increase in the soluble form of thrombomodulin PTM was positively correlated to the duration of the disease, age of the mother, PCO2 [in BOA] and CRP. The longer the duration of symptoms, the older the age of the mother or the higher in the PCO2 or CRP +ve, the higher will be PTM. In the other hand, PTM was negatively correlated to gestational age, Apgar score, PH in [BOA], HCO3 in [BGA] and platelet count. The in the Apgar score, PH, HCO3 and platelet count, the lower will be PTM level

ABSTRACT

In this study, four patients were identified and managed for neglected rupture of patellar tendon. A new technique was offered by using a bone patellar tendon-bone autogenous graft from the contralateral knee to reconstruct chronic patellar tendon ruptures. The grafts were fixed with screws proximally and distally and supplemented with a cerclage wire running above the superior pole of the patella to one of the distal tibial screws to decrease tension at the graft during the healing phase. The remnants of the ruptured tendon were sutured to the graft for augmentation. The results of this new technique were satisfactory and encouraging after a follow up period averaged 4.5 years. The several advantages of this technique were discussed

ABSTRACT

Fifteen cases underwent Maquet "Dome shaped" osteotomy for unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis and varus deformity. The average age was 46.4 years. The procedure was accompanied by abrasion arthroplasty in six cases. Different types of external fixators were used among the procedure. The preoperative planning, operative technique, results and complications were discussed concentrating on the advantages of the used technique in comparison to other procedures

ABSTRACT

In this study, 12 patients were surgically managed for habitual dislocation of their patellae. The surgical approach started by lateral retinacular release, an oblique incision of the anterolateral aspect of vastus lateralis, a release of any abnormal attachments of the iliotibial b and and distolateral advancement of the vastus medialis muscle [a new approach]. Other procedures can be added when required as a release of vastus intermedius or lengthening of the rectus femoris. This research stressed on the importance of the differentiation between habitual dislocation of the patella and recurrent or permanent dislocation
