ABSTRACT

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been an effective and widely used treatment for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The presence of anaemia in critically ill patients undergoing surgical procedures has been associated with worse clinical outcomes. Hence, the current study was conducted to assess short term outcome of percutaneous coronary interventions in anaemic patients presenting with coronary artery diseases. Methods: This prospective observational study enrolled 200 patients who underwent PCI. Patients were classified into 2 groups: anaemic patients and non-anaemic patients. The anaemic patients were furtherly be classified according to severity of anaemia into 3 grades mild anaemia, moderate anaemia, and severe anaemia. All cases were subjected to complete history taking, clinical examination and baseline laboratory tests: including CBC, serum urea and creatinine, cardiac enzymes include serum troponin, CK-MB and standard 12-lead ECG. Results: The mean Heart Rate was statistically significantly higher in the anaemic group as compared with the non-anaemic group. The mean Ejection Fraction was statistically significantly lower in the anaemic group as compared with the non-anaemic group. The percentage of LM affection in the anaemic group was statistically significantly higher as compared with the non-anaemic group. The incidence of arrythmia in the anaemic group was statistically significantly higher as compared with the non-anaemic group. Severe anaemic and low EF% patients were associated with higher incidence of stroke and MI. Conclusions: Patients with baseline anaemia before PCI have a higher incidence of PCI associated complications. Therefore, anaemia could be a predictor of PCI related complications.

ABSTRACT

@#The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of enteroparasitic infections in students and their hormonal and immunological repercussions on physical development. Students of basic education of both sexes were evaluated. Parasitological stool tests were performed using the Hoffman and Kato-Katz methods. The students were divided into two groups: a control group (negative parasitological examination, N=25) and an infected group (positive parasitological test, N=25). Anthropometric variables (height, weight, and BMI), concentrations of hormones (melatonin and cortisol), cytokine/chemokine levels (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17 and TNF-α) and physical performance (aerobic capacity, upper- and lower-limb muscle strength and abdominal performance) were evaluated. The prevalence of parasitic infection among the students was 7.98%. No anthropometric differences were observed among the groups. IL-2 and TNF-α levels were higher and IL-8 levels were lower in serum from students who were positive for parasitic infection. Serum from students who were positive for parasitic infection showed higher levels of melatonin than that from parasitenegative students. No differences were observed in cortisol levels. Students who were positive for parasitic infection presented greater lower-limb strength and lower abdominal performance than parasite-negative students. In the parasitic infection group, IL-12 was positively correlated with melatonin. In the parasitic infection group, IL-8 showed a positive correlation with aerobic capacity, while IL-17 and TNF-α showed a positive correlation with abdominal performance. These data suggest that parasitic infections determine the profile of inflammatory cytokines and that melatonin may be involved in the control of this process to minimize tissue damage. Additionally, students’ difficulty in practising physical exercises can be an indication of enteroparasitic infection.

ABSTRACT

Lactobacillus delbrueckii sp. bulgaricus WICC-B-02 is new probiotic strain which was initially isolated from the mother’s milk. As lactic acid bacterium, it’s known as a highly efficient probiotic microorganism with a wide range of benefits on the human health. This study was conducted to design and establish industrial platform for high cell mass production of L. delbrueckii sp. bulgaricus for pharmaceutical and food industries application. However, due to low cell mass production caused by the accumulation of lactic acid during the cultivation of lactic acid bacteria, therefore, the optimization of cell mass production with low lactic acid production was developed in this study. The new formulation of the production medium was developed by optimizing the main components such as glucose (30 g.L-1), yeast extract (6.0 g.L-1) and peptone (6.0 g.L-1)in shake flask cultivation. The cell mass production was 3.14 g.L-1, and it increased to 6.08g.L-1 with the lactic acid production being reduced by about 33%, compared to the un-optimized medium.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to find out the social impacts implied as a result of service projects in some villages. Thus, the objective of the study was to identify the differences between the population in the two villages investigated; the first village with complete services and the second village lacks most of the services. The two villages chosen are Shobra El-Nakhla [first village] and Mansheiat El-Salam [second village]. Both are located in Belbis District, Sharqia Governorate. The two investigated groups included a r and om sample of 235 cases, representing 10% of the total households in each of the 2 villages and chosen from the registers of the supplementary office. The means of statistical analysis were the percentage of different repetition related to the variables of the study. Statistical tests were also used X2 [T test] to find out the significance of the difference between the two investigated groups. The study findings showed that the positive significant differences between the two villages are related to educational degree, social participation in local projects, communication with other societies and living st and ard. Insignificant difference was found between the two villages in membership in social organizations, contact with cooperatives, role of rural women, degree of social control, and the attitude towards family solidarity. There were nonsignificant differences between the two villages in the degree of educational aspiration, degree of exposure to mass media and attitude towards birth control
