ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The poor geographical distribution of water in the national territory combined with its waste, the pollution of watercourses close to urban and industrial centers, and the inadequate efficiency of conventional treatment processes make the treatment and reuse of water topics of increasing importance in Brazil. One of the advanced water treatment methods is membrane separation processes, such as nanofiltration. However, these processes are subject to fouling phenomenon, which causes a gradual decrease in the efficiency of the process. Therefore, the present work aims to evaluate different methods of pretreatment of water to mitigate the formation of biofilm in nanofiltration membranes. The adsorption processes on alumina particles and disinfection through activated carbon impregnated with silver nanoparticles were applied to a sample of a surface water body. Samples with and without pretreatment were nanofiltered and the propensity to fouling was evaluated. The efficiency of the adsorbents, used both separately and together, in removing organic compounds and the UV/Vis, scanning electron microscope, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses of the activated carbon impregnated with silver nanoparticles showed that the materials used in the pre-treatment were properly synthesized. It was also possible to identify the main functional groups of the biopolymers present in biofilms formed over time. Finally, it was observed that the adsorption of organic matter is more efficient for the control of rapid fouling while the bactericidal effect stands out in the long-term fouling control.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the removal of dissolved organic carbon in filtered water followed by pre-oxidation with ozone and adsorption on granular activated carbon. The rapid small-scale column test was used for the adsorption essays with activated carbon produced from coconut shells. A comparison was made between the breakthrough curves for tests performed with and without pre-oxidation with ozone. The results showed reductions in dissolved organic carbon concentrations after initial passage of water with and without ozone through the rapid small-scale column test column, followed by progressive increases in concentrations along with the number of the bed volumes. In the final phase of the tests, increases in bed volumes did not cause significative changes in effluent dissolved organic carbon concentrations. The same behavior was also observed with respect to ultra-violet absorbance at 254 nm. The use of ozone prior to adsorption on GAC, using the ERCER method, caused greater reductions on UV254 absorbance than in concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. The specific ultraviolet absorbance values of samples that received ozone were lower than those that were not ozonized.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In this study a biochar was produced from corn cob (BCA), which was activated with phosphoric acid to verify its potential for removal of herbicide glyphosate (GLF) (commercial formula) in aqueous media. BCA was characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, sorption and desorption of N2, scanning electron microscope, and zero charge potential. Kinetic results of adsorption were adjusted to pseudo-first and pseudo-second order reactions. The adsorption process was studied to verify if it followed Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, and the thermodynamic parameter was calculated for 23 oC, 43 cC and 63 oC. The results showed that adsorption of GLF on BCA depended on temperature, adsorbent mass, and pH. The best results were obtained for the temperature of 63 oC with 0.25 g de GLF and pH = 7.0, conditions that presented 62.3% of GLF removal and low adsorption capacity (2.67 mg. g−1). That was probably due to the porous nature of BCA and co-adsorption of other constituents that were present in the commercial formula of GLF. The adsorption kinetics was represented by the model of pseudo-second order and considered fast, taking 15 min to reach 98% of the maximum adsorption capacity. The isotherm data were well represented by the Freundlich model. Finally, the thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption of GLF is of endothermic nature (ΔHº > 0) and endergonic (ΔGº > 0). The results confirmed that BCA from corn cob is an adsorbent capable of removing GLF (commercial formula) from aqueous media. However, the endothermic nature of the process can compromise its performance in water treatment processes.

ABSTRACT

@#To establish a high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)method to determine the content of bacteriostats in the ocular extractives eye drops, Diamonsil C18(4. 6 mm×250 mm, 5 μm)column was used, with gradient elusion by 1% triethylamine solution(pH 3. 0)(mobile phase A)and methanol(mobile phase B). The detection wavelength was 256 nm; the column temperature was 40 °C; and the flow rate was 1. 0 mL/min. Under these conditions, the three bacteriostats of methylparaben, ethylparoben and chlorhexidine acetate showed good resolution. The bacteriostats exhibited good linear relationship between the peak area and the concentration in the concentration range of 0. 1- 80 μg/mL(r> 0. 999 1). The recoveries were from 97. 2% to 104. 1%, and the RSD was 0. 8% to 1. 2%. The content of bacteriostats in all the five batches of ocular extractives eye drops was less than 10% of the prescription amount. It was found that the activated carbon used in the production process had strong adsorption effect on the bacteriostat, and that the lower the temperature and the higher the concentration of activated carbon, the stronger the adsorption of bacteriostatic agent. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon for different bacteriostats is: chlorhexidine acetate > ethylparoben > methylparaben. The results showed that the established HPLC method was easy to operate with high sensitivity and good repeatability. It can be used to determine the content of bacteriostat in ocular extractives eye drops quickly and accurately. In addition, this study reveals for the first time the effect of impurity removal process on bacteriostat in the production of ocular extractives eye drops. It is not suitable to use activated carbon to remove impurities before adding parabens and chlorhexidine acetate bacteriostats. The current work provides a new guiding basis for the monitoring and improvement of the quality of ocular extractives eye drops.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective. To establish by means of experimenting by batch the capacity of removal, the kinetics and adsorption thermodynamics of activated carbon prepared from manioc husk (Manihot esculenta) in the removal of direct blue 86 dye. Materials and methods. Firstly, the experimental methodology worked on the preparation of activated carbon by chemical activation of manioc husk with H3PO4 calcined at 530°C. In the characterization the texture properties were determined by means of the blue methylene and iodine indices, the basic and acidic functional groups were quantified by the Boehm method, and the proximate analyses were done following the norms ASTM D2867-70, ASTM D2866 and ASTM D2866-94. During the batch studies, the effect of several parameters over the adsorption capacity was evaluated: pH (2, 4, 8 and 10), temperature (25, 30 and 40°C) and initial concentration of the dye (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mg/L). Both physicochemical and adsorption characteristics of the activated carbon from manioc husk (CAY) were compared against those of a commercial brand (CAM). Results. The results of characterization showed that both carbons have a chemistry heterogeneous surface, acidic for CAY and basic for CAM. The maximum capacity obtained was 6.1 mg/g for CAY and 3.7 mg/g for CAM. The thermodynamic calculations showed that the removal was spontaneous. The kinetics for both carbon samples fits a pseudo second-order model. Conclusions. The activated carbon obtained from the manioc husk can be considered an efficient adsorbent for the removal of dyes.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess by means of rapid tests of small-scale column the adsorption capacity of granular activated carbon (GAC) for removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from samples of ultrapure water and filtered water from a water treatment plant. The adsorption capacities values obtained from distilled water samples were 67% higher than those obtained for water having natural organic matter (NOM). NOM strongly influenced the removal of 2,4-D, competing for GAC adsorption sites, and decreasing its adsorption capacity to 7 mg 2,4-D g-1 CAG. For 2,4-D concentration of 7089 ± 104 µg L-1 and the water treated volume/GAC volume at 766, it was possible to produce treated water with 2,4-D concentration less than 30 µg L-1 as recommended by Brazilian Drinking Water Legislation of the Ministry of Health (Portaria MS 2914/2011).

ABSTRACT

@#Wood is one of the most common material found in homes and industrial fires, particularly in Malaysia. The abundance of different types of wood used to build structures, frames, furniture and others are important to take note as wood is a conducive material that can be used to initiate and propagate a fire, particularly in forensic fire cases. This study was conducted to provide the volatile chemical fingerprint of burnt Merbau (Intsia sp.) wood using gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS). The wood samples were prepared under two conditions; fully dried and partially dried. Six study replications of each condition were burnt outdoors and underwent an extraction process using activated carbon tablets. The tablets were incubated in an oven for 16 hours at 80ºC. Next, the tablets were desorbed in two different types of solvent; pentane and ethanol. The pentane- and ethanol-desorbed volatile products were then introduced into the GC-MS. Volatile organic compounds obtained across both conditions were in the range of volatile acids, aromatics and its derivatives, D-glucopyranose, phenolic derivatives and cycloalkane. The compounds emitted by fully and partially dried Merbau wood samples were similar, differing only in the absence of malonic acid and succinic acid in partially dried Merbau wood samples. Both solvents desorbed different types of volatile compounds. The burning behaviour of partially dried Merbau wood were different to those documented from fully dried Merbau wood and is attributed to the composition of wood rather than the dry or wet conditions.

ABSTRACT

A cheap and simple sample preparation method, consisting of a dispersive solid-phase method and an ad-sorbent, activated carbon decorated PAN nanofibers, was employed and used for the extraction of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, and enrofloxacin) in wastewater. Electrospun PAN nanofibers that were deco-rated with activated carbon produced from waste tires were used as the solid phase and the antibiotics analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography. Parameters such as pH, mass of adsorbent (MA), extraction volume (EV), and extraction time (ET) were optimized owing to their potential effect on the extraction of antibiotics from water. The recovery of all antibiotics was satisfactory, in the range of 90%–99%. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.05, 0.11, 0.20, and 0.53, 1.21, 2.17 μg/L, respectively. The precision was determined from the repeatability and reproducibility and expressed as the intra-day (n = 20) and inter-day (n = 5) precision. The intra-day and inter-day precision was reported in terms of the per-centage relative standard deviation, which was 3% and 4%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the ac-tivated carbon-decorated PAN nanofibers was satisfactory, and the reusability of the adsorbent was im-pressive when reused ten times. The accuracy of the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) was validated by spike recovery tests; the results proved the reliability and efficiency of adsorbing antibiotics from was-tewater. Finally, the proposed method was applied to wastewater samples collected from a wastewater treatment plant, which included influent, secondary, and effluent wastewater.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Microcystins (MC), which are among the cyanotoxins more commonly found in cyanobacterial blooms, are not efficiently removed by full-cycle water treatment technologies. As an additional barrier, there is the adsorption process with granular activated carbon (GAC). This research compared the efficiency of MC-LR removal by seven GACs produced from different raw materials, analyzing these samples' properties: moisture, ash content, pH and textural characteristics. Initially, the results indicated that the GAC properties were influenced by the source material, as well as by the production method. In the adsorption assays, the Langmuir model indicated that in 4h, with 100 mg.L-1 dosage, the granular activated carbon of lignite (CGLIN) had the highest MC-LR (Co: 115.1 µg.L-1) removal capacity (97.2%), with qe,max of 10.6 mg.g-1. The volume of mesopores significantly influenced the adsorption capacity of microcystin by the evaluated GACs (r=0.98, Pearson). ABSTRACT

Abstract The enthalpic and entropic changes resulting from the process of acetaminophen adsorption on activated carbons with modified surface chemistry were studied. A pH variation was performed to determine the changes in the thermodynamic properties when there are charges in the adsorbate and adsorbent. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity (1.172 mmoles g-1) corresponds to the process carried out in the activated charcoal labeled as CAR in this study at pH 7; the values of the thermodynamic functions immersion enthalpy and entropy of adsorption were -36.02 J g-1 and 0.123 J g-1 K-1, respectively. Thus, the adsorption entropy change for the acetaminophen on the activated carbons depended on the pH. It was found that this thermodynamic function varies in the following order pH 2 > pH 11 > pH 7. This behavior is related to the number of species present in the solution capable of interact with the activated carbon surface.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The amination of a nitric acid pre oxidized activated carbon in the adsorption of 4-nitrophenol was evaluated. The Sips model application to the aqueous solution adsorption data, using Sigmoidal Logistic 3 Parameter formula, in the SigmaPlot 12 program was applied. The obtained parameters were compared with those calculated with Statistica 7 program for Sips and Langmuir models. It was found that the activated carbon increases the adsorption from 2.16 to 2.19 mmol g-1, showing good adsorbent-adsorbate affinity. The system's characteristic energy parameter calculated with the Langmuir model was 377.47 L mmol-1, when not considering energy heterogeneity, while from the Sips model was 8.32 (L.mmol-1)1/n. Additionally, it was found that in the mathematical equation Sigmoidal Logistic 3 Parameter of the SigmaPlot program, the 1/x0 value corresponds to the Langmuir-Freundlich model constant KLF, while the parameter value KS in the Sips model is equal to (1/x0)-b in this program. It was concluded that the 4-nitrophenol adsorption on activated carbon is favored by the presence of nitrogen groups on their activated carbon surface.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Sixteen batch reactors fed with different mixtures of landfill leachate combined with synthetic wastewater were treated using the PACT® process (activated sludge process plus powdered activated carbon addition - PAC). The objective was to measure the color removal using two mathematical adjustments: the first adjustment combined the variables PAC concentration (0 to 6 g.L-1) and landfill leachate concentration in the wastewater (0 to 10%, in volume); and the second model combined PAC concentration and the influent color (276 to 1,199 uH). The response surface methodology was used to describe the response of both adjustments. The results indicated that as the proportion of leachate was increased up to 5%, higher PAC concentrations resulted in a better color removal in the reactors. When the leachate proportion was 10%, the reactors were less efficacious, except for the one with 6 g.L-1, which presented the highest color removal within the experiment.

ABSTRACT

In this experimental development work, the Escuela de Ingeniería Química ITCA-FEPADE set out to verify the effectiveness of previously treated banana peels and pseudostem and endocarp to remove heavy metal contamination in a water sample. For this purpose, said biomasses were processed to be used as filter media, which were characterized by means of physical tests: density and particle size. Its effectiveness to remove metals was evaluated, filtering water contaminated with known amounts of heavy metals such as iron, chromium and nickel (Fe3 + Cr6 + and Ni2 +), varying the contact time and the type of filter medium. The quantification of the metals in the treated water was carried out by atomic absorption spectrophotometry: for nickel (λ = 232.0 nm); iron (λ = 24830 nm) and hexavalent chromium (λ = 357.9 nm). In addition, the color in the filtrates was determined by the platinum-cobalt method. It was concluded that the biomasses used in this study were effective in reducing heavy metals and color in the synthetic water sample prepared in the laboratory.

ABSTRACT

Unused medications have the possibility of being abused, causing serious harm to individuals who were not prescribed the drug. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the proper disposal of unused prescribed medications to maintain safety and prevent environmental hazards. However, many of the current disposal techniques do not properly address safety. A drug disposal pouch containing granular activated carbon offers a unique disposal method to deactivate residual or expiredmedication in a convenient, effective, and safe manner. A robust and validated method for methylphenidate hydrochloride and loxapine succinate was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the deactivation efficiency of the disposal system was tested. Methylphenidate hydrochloride was analyzed on a C18 analytical column (250mm × 4.60mm, 100?) using acetonitrile-water (0.05% (v/v) trifluoroacetic acid) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0mL/min with a run time of 15min and retention time of 7.8min. Loxapine succinate was separated on a C8100? (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) column maintained at 25 °C using a flow rate of 1.0mL/min. The run time was 10min and the retention time of the drug was around 4.6min.Mobile phase was composed of acetonitrile and water (0.3% triethylamine) at pH 3.0 as 40:60 (v/v). Reference standard solutions (100 μg/mL) for both drugs were prepared by dissolving in mobile phases. These methods provide good linearity (R2 = 0.999) over the range of 5–100 μg/mL for methylphenidate hydrochloride and 0.1–100 μg/mL for loxapine succinate. The assay methods were successfully applied to study the deactivation of these drugs.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Comercial activated carbon samples (A, B, C, and D) used in filters for the treatment of water were characterized and evaluated in the decontamination of heavy metals present in river water and in the elimination of coliform microorganisms. The carbon samples had microporous and mesoporous structures. Surface areas of between 705 and 906 m2/g were found. The carbon samples were amorphous and the presence of antibacterial agents such as Ag, Cl, Cu, and Si was detected. It was determined that for As and Pb, whose initial concentrations in contaminated water (water of the Tumbes river-Peru) were 56.7 and 224.0 μg/L, respectively, the percentage of adsorption was close to 100%. The relationship between point of zero charge pH of the activated carbons and pH of the river water during the experiments plays a determinant role in the adsorption of the analyzed elements. The antibacterial capacity was evaluated satisfactorily against the following strains of fecal gram negative bacteria: Escherichia coli (ATCC® 25922™), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC® 14028™), and Shigella flexneri (ATCC® 12022™). This ability is based on the surface presence in the carbons ofthe mentioned antibacterial agents.
