ABSTRACT

With high incidence, high disability rate and serious impact on patients' quality of life, advanced primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) with cataract is a severe eye disease in China and its main treatment method is surgery.Phacoemulsification cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation (PEI) combined with trabeculectomy has been used to treat advanced PACG with cataract, but there are many postoperative complications.Recently, combined PEI, goniosynechialysis (GSL) and goniotomy (GT) has been proven to be a safe and effective surgical treatment for advanced PACG with cataract. At present, the combined PEI+ GSL+ GT surgery has been widely applied, but there is still a lack of uniform standards for its clinical application. Therefore, it is necessary to formulate a detailed and complete recommendation of the surgical procedures for PEI+ GSL+ GT, to standardize its application in clinical practice.Based on the analysis of the existing problems, some glaucoma experts in China have formulated detailed and complete operation norms, as well as expert recommendations on surgical indications and contraindications, anesthetic methods, surgical techniques and perioperative medication to standardize the application process of PEI+ GSL+ GT in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Seed removal by ants is an interaction that may greatly affect the dynamic and structure of the vegetation. This aspect is well known for granivorous ants; however, there is little information on the effect of omnivorous ants. Objective: To assess the potential impact of the omnivorous ant Dorymyrmex insanus on vegetation. Methods: In the Pedregal Reserve, Mexico City, we identified the items in the refuse piles of ten ant colonies, for one year, covering the rainy and dry seasons. For each season we calculated seed diversity and analyzed the possible relationship between seed size and their abundance in the refuse piles, with regression models. We also did germination tests with seeds of Tagetes micrantha, comparing seeds from piles and from plants. Results: D. insanus removed seeds of 19 plant species as well as plant remains (such as leaves, twigs, roots), and remains of insects. Seed diversity was higher in the rainy season but the greatest abundance was in the dry season. When analyzing the relationship between seed length and abundance in the refuse piles, we found that the ants preferred seeds of around 10 mm. We also found that more seeds of T. micrantha germinated when they were previously handled by ants. Conclusions: The ant D. insanus actively participates in the removal of seeds from several species, favoring germination, and seasonality affects the selectivity of resources.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Lead has shown a close relationship with the fine arts'world through the pigments used by artists for thousand of years. Close contact with potentially dangerous chemical substances for health, almost always without occupational hygiene and safety measures, has produced, in many cases, occupational illnesses in these artists, sometimes suspected and in other cases, more than confirmed. In the present work, the history of Miguel Angel Buonarroti's working life is analyzed, since there is sufficient record to establish a causal link with occupational exposure to Lead.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Hypsipyla grandella is a key forest pest in Latin America and the Caribbean, where it has precluded attempts to establish commercial plantations of mahoganies (Swieteniaspp.) and cedars (Cedrelaspp.). In the search for methods to manage its larvae, being both preventative and cost-effective, as well as based upon resources from tropical flora, the crude flower extract of angel's trumpet, Brugmansia candida, as well as four partitions thereof (water, hexane, dichlorometane, and ethyl acetate), were tested for phagodeterrence. Laboratory bioassays involved increasing concentrations of the crude extract (0.1, 0.3, 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 % w/v) as well as each one of the partitions (in accordance to the yield obtained from the partitioning process). A randomized complete block design, with four replicates, was used. H. grandellainstar III larvae were exposed for 24 h to Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) leaf discs dipped into the respective treatment, after which disc consumption was measured. Strong phagodeterrence was detected at concentrations as low as 1.0 % y 0.122 % w/v for the crude extract and the hexane partitions, respectively. In addition, a single bioassay was performed to compare a single concentration (0.38 % w/v) of the alkaloid scopolamine, which reduced consumption in 90 % with respect to the controls. Also, mortality and sublethal effects were assessed in larvae exposed to the crude extract, the hexane partition and scopolamine, with no evidence for them, which confirmed their phagodeterrence. Moreover, the crude extract was submitted to a phytochemical screening by means of a number of qualitative tests, which showed that alkaloids, tannins, triterpenes and cumarins were the most important secondary metabolites. Finally, the presence of scopolamine was confirmed in both the crude extract and the hexane partition, by means of the gas chromatography-spectrometry (GC-MS) analytical method. It is recommended to prepare a formulation of scopolamine plus some adjuvants, in order to test its effectiveness under greenhouse conditions, as a first step to advance in the development of a commercial phagodeterrent. ABSTRACT

Abstract The first gynandromorph of the insect order Zoraptera is reported. A gynandromorph of Zorotypus brasiliensis Silvestri is described from a likely parthenogenetic population in the Atlantic Forest around the border of the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. As has been previously surmised for this species, the sample consisted of only females, tending to support the hypothesis of thelytokous parthenogenesis for this population. The gynandromorph is largely female in outward appearance, but exhibits male secondary sexual traits on the left side of the apical abdominal segments. The left (male) antenna consists of antennomeres of different proportions to those of the right (female) antenna. The internal genitalia and associated sclerites, however, are female although some are augmented in their form relative to normal-type females. Comments are made on possible factors resulting in the development of the gynandromorph. This is the 16th insect order with gynandromorphism reported.

ABSTRACT

Angel Arturo Aballí Arellano is considered one of the most important pediatricians of the Cuban medicine history, up to the point that it is almost impossible to write the history of this discipline in our country without deeply studying his life and work, all of it devoted to the defense of the new generations interests, the childhood health status, and to struggle for obtaining the resources required for their attention, welfare and happiness. He studied diarrheic diseases, malnutrition and tuberculosis. With this aim he inaugurated the Anti-tuberculosis Dispensary for Children Calmette, the Grancvher Preventer for Nursing Infants, a ward for tuberculous children at the hospital La Esperanza and later the Infantile Antituberculous Hospital that today is named after him and after the triumph of the revolution became a General Pediatric Hospital (AU).

ABSTRACT

Reich was responsible for bringing the body to understand the psychological process through their research on the economic viewpoint. However, the body work has long been relegated to a population not always recognized in intellectual and social fields. Fortunately, this situation has changed and the body work is gaining recognition and respect. If work on the psyche is always very delicate, is even more delicate when it involves the body. The forms of subjectivity in our favor social and psychological illnesses. Mental health professionals, especially psychologists and psychoanalysts, when involved in the phenomenon of transference, are called to interact with their entire body, not just with their theoretical and technical knowledge relating to an intellectual approach. For these reasons, we believe that in the preparation of psi professionals are necessary not only the theoretical learning and personal analysis, as advocated by them, but also the awareness of the body and its perceptions. The Angel Vianna method for Movement Awareness offers the opportunity of creative and expressive development through research with one's own body, with movement and with another body. In this paper, we chose to understand the body as a path to the unconscious, from the teachings of Reich, for whom the economic viewpoint of psychoanalysis deserved prominence. Thus, we intend to demonstrate how the work performed by Angel Vianna School supports this theory and health prevention.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of unilateral mydriasis after accidental exposure to an Angel's trumpet leaf. CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old woman visited the Eye Department complaining of blurred vision and difficulty in light adaptation in the left eye of 1-week duration. The best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes and other ophthalmological findings were considered normal except for dilation of the left pupil and a decrease in light reflex. The patient was initially unaware of any cause of her eye problems, but when asked specifically, the patient remembered an Angel's trumpet leaf brushing against her left eye when she carried the plants. There were no other previous medical or drug histories, thus the Angel's trumpet was considered as the cause for the unilateral mydriasis. The patient's progress was followed for a week, her symptoms improved and the pupil size and reflex returned to normal. CONCLUSIONS: The cultivation of Angel's trumpet has become increasingly popular in Korea in recent years. The present case emphasizes the importance of an accurate and detailed history regarding specific contact history with plants like Angel's trumpet in otherwise healthy patients affected by unilateral mydriasis.

ABSTRACT

The freshwater angelfishes (Pterophyllum) are South American cichlids that have become very popular among aquarists, yet scarce information on their culture and aquarium husbandry exists. We studied Pterophyllum scalare to analyze dietary effects on fecundity, growth, and survival of eggs and larvae during 135 days. Three diets were used: A) decapsulated cysts of Artemia, B) commercial dry fish food, and C) a mix diet of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and the cladoceran Daphnia magna. The initial larval density was 100 organisms in each 40L aquarium. With diet A, larvae reached a maximum weight of 3.80g, a total length of 6.3 cm, and a height of 5.8cm; with diet B: 2.80g, 4.81cm, and 4.79cm, and with diet C: 3.00g, 5.15cm, and 5.10cm, respectively. Significant differences were observed between diet A, and diet B and C, but no significantly differences were observed between diets B and C. Fecundity varied from 234 to 1 082 eggs in 20 and 50g females, respectively. Egg survival ranged from 87.4% up to 100%, and larvae survival (80 larvae/40L aquarium) from 50% to 66.3% using diet B and A, respectively. Live food was better for growing fish than the commercial balanced food diet. Fecundity and survival are important factors in planning a good production of angelfish. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (3): 741-747. Epub 2009 September 30.

ABSTRACT

Augusto Ángel Maya was born in Manizales in 1932, with a doctorate in History from the Gregorian University of Rome and Honoris Causa Doctorate in Environmental Education from the Guadalajara University of Mexico. He's one of the most important thinkers of the emergent environmental thought in Colombia. From his work as a professor, as an official of governmental institutions and international organisms, he's contributed to the consolidation of the environmental thought and movement in Colombia for the past 40 years. His contributions can be synthesized in two: theoretical and conceptual reflection in order to understand the environmental issues from a political, social and cultural perspective; and the creation of political work tools, such as environmental education and the support of the national organization of Environmental Movement MA. This work synthesizes part of this legacy.

ABSTRACT

In contrast with the traditional dance teaching, in which dance held together standardized body and movement, the Angel Vianna method of Awareness of Movement began its development for the teaching of classical ballet - and afterwards of body expression - that considered body and movement in its singularity. This original and authentic method of dealing with the body turned the Awareness of Movement also useful from a therapeutic viewpoint, applied to several areas in the health field. However, despite the fact that over the years the Awareness of Movement showed consistency and efficacy, its therapeutic application still occurs only through experience, lacking formalization of the theoretical-conceptual foundations that could give support to it as a therapeutic method in the health area. So our main objective in this paper was to propose a possible formalization of the theoretical-conceptual foundations that guide the Awareness of Movement in the health field. The research starts with our own experience, and uses the philosophical-conceptual method that allows us to demolish crystallized beliefs and propose a broader conception of the process health-illness. We believe that a therapeutic like the Angel Vianna method of Awareness of Movement can, through the body, help integrate the psycho-soma, amplifying the individual's health in its normative and creative capacity. Although this method is a body practice that makes itself powerful in several aspects from its own experience, we found that its formalization, without falling in reductionisms or crystallizations, could bring an even greater vitality to its therapeutic application.

ABSTRACT

The idea that the essence of scientific investigation is the production of knowledge and that scientific literature constitutes a manifestation of this knowledge means that bibliometric approaches portray science through its results. These groups can be identified by their co-authorship, by grouping together all those authors who were directly or indirectly involved in writing the scientific papers. In this study, the authors analyze the reception of psychoanalysis and the development of ideas on psychology in Argentina, as well as the role played in this field by Spaniard Angel Garma, based on both biographical and quantitative data.
