ABSTRACT

Despite being rare, ocular injury due to a compact disc burst can be responsible for severe ocular damage. We present in this article a case of corneal perforation in addition to lens trauma caused by intentional compact disc break. A 44 year old female physician was examined complaining of visual acuity decrease, light sensitivity, tearing and foreign body sensation on OD after watching a compact disc being broken intentionally. In the first examination, she had a corneal perforation with aqueous humor leakage, anterior lens capsule lesion and anterior cortical opacity. The visual acuity was 0.1. She was treated with a therapeutic soft contact lens and the regular use of topical antibiotic and hypotension solutions, evolving with the healing of the corneal injury and lens opacity stabilization. Twenty four months later, the OD refraction was similar to that measured before the trauma and the visual acuity was 1.0 (-1).

ABSTRACT

The CD-ROM "Voice Assessment: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology & Medicine" was developed as a teaching tool for people interested in the production of the spoken or sung human voice. Its content comprises several subjects concerning the anatomy and physiology of spoken and sung voice. A careful assessment becomes necessary in order to ensure the effectiveness of teaching and learning educational materials, whether related to education or health, within the proposal of education mediated by technology. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the Virtual Man Project's CD-ROM "Voice Assessment: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology & Medicine", as a self-learning material, in two different populations: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology students and Lyrical Singing students. The participants were instructed to study the CD-ROM during 1 month and answer two questionnaires: one before and another one after studying the CD-ROM. The quantitative results were compared statistically by the Student's t-test at a significance level of 5 percent. RESULTS: Seventeen out of the 28 students who completed the study, were Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology students, while 11 were Lyrical Singing students (dropout rate of 44 percent). Comparison of the answers to the questionnaires before and after studying the CD-ROM showed a statistically significant increase of the scores for the questionnaire applied after studying the CD-ROM for both Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Lyrical Singing students, with p<0.001 and p<0.004, respectively. There was also a statistically significant difference in all topics of this questionnaire for both groups of students. CONCLUSION: The results concerning the evaluation of the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Lyrical Singing students' knowledge before and after learning from the CD-ROM allowed concluding that the participants made significant improvement in their knowledge of the proposed contents after studying the CD-ROM. Based on this, it is assumed that this didactic material is an effective instrument for self-learning of this population.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for cancer and vascular disease but, a correctable habit. Despite widespread recognition of the hazardous health effects of smoking, Korean men and adolescents' smoking rates are not decreasing and is, emerging as a public health problem. Health care managers in schools and factories are expected to play a critical role in smoking cessation. Health education is one important area that will benefit from using a personal computer (PC). To promote smoking cessation, specified and risk-based approaches are considered to encourage the motivation of smokers. METHODS: This smoking cessation software (CD-Rom) was developed for health care managers in schools and factories using Microsoft Visual Basic and Access. RESULTS: This program divided into two major categories. Part one is a library of various kinds of information about smoking such as articles, lecture notes, pictures, slides, mp3 and motion files. The other part was an autonomous smoking cessation prescription program. This program analyzed smokers' smoking pattern (using WHY test), nicotine addiction level (using Fagerstrom score), stress level (using BEPSI test), and smokers' confidence level. After input of smoker's history by oneself, the program showed smoking cessation prescription automatically in monitor or printer. CONCLUSION: Health care managers in schools and factories can be experts of smoking cessation easily with this program in their work places.

ABSTRACT

In Korea, the number of older persons has been increasing annually. The proportion of older person aged 65 and over in Korea was 6.6% in 1998 and will reach 12% in 2020. Also, the older persons who are at greates risk for chronic illness with functional dependency is growing the fastest. One of the main diseases of elderly is dementia. Caring for the elderly, in particular elderly mentally ill patients has become one of the biggest social concerns in Korean society today. The caregiver who looks after a disabled or demented elderly person is usually a woman who is either a spouse of daughter in law in Korea. Caregivef s stress leads to dysphoria and in vulnerable individuals, to depression. Hence, family caregivers of people with dementia frequently experience significant emotional, physical and financial stress. So, there is a need to develop, for the Korean family caregiver, home-based nursing interventions using computer-assisted instructions made available either on CD ROM or over the internet. The purpose of this study was to develop and to examine the effect of a caring program for the family caregivers among the Korean demented elderly. The family caregiver nursing intervention program was developed using a team approach involving nursing professors and computer professionals. The application is available on CD ROM as well as on the World Wide Web. The CD ROM program is made up of five sections: 1) definition and symptoms of dementia to support basic medical and nursing knowledge including psychological problems of the demented elderly, 2) methods for coping with the demented elderly including video techniques, 3) physical care and ADL management for the demented elderly including vido techniques, 4) stress management methods for the family caregiver including music therapy, exercise therapy, oriental acupucture technique on the hand, foot massage and paper handicraft, 5) social referral information service. To examine the effect of a CD ROM based caring program, the study was implemented by nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 52 family caregivers who were composed of 22 caregivers for the experimental group and of 30 caregivers for the control group. In this study, the measuring instruments were family caregivers nursing care need assessment tool, fatigue tool for family caregiver' s physical health state, OARS for family caregiver' s psychiatric heath state and family burden scale for family caregiver' s psychological health state. The results of the analysis were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference between experimental group and control group on pretest. So two group had homogeneity. 2. There was significant difference between experimental group and control group on posttest measuring nursing care need state(t=8.55, p<0.01)and family caregivef s psychological health state(t=2.58, p<0.05). Therefore, this CD ROM based caring program was revealed the positive effect for family caregivers among the Korean demented elderly. For further research, with distributing the CD ROM, it suggests that the effective caring program to decrease family caregivef s fatigue and psychological health state as like anxiety, stress, strain will be developed.

ABSTRACT

The authors have made a CD-ROM titled 'Atlas of Pathology (AP)' for medical students to understand histopathologic findings with ease. We used a 35 mm film scanner to convert an existing file into digital images. A pathologist and two professional programmers collaborated to create the program 'AtlasMaster 1.0' based on (IBM) PC for organization of previously captured digital images. Minimum system requirement for the 'AP' was Pentium II 166 MHz, 32 MB RAM, Windows 95 or 98, 800 600 resolution, 16-bit color, 20 speed CD-ROM drive. The 'AP' was composed of a execution file (Pathology_Atlas.exe), a DB file (pathology.mdb), and reference files (*.bmp, *.jpg, *.txt). The DB file contained fields for chapter, section, disease entity, and information for location of reference files. About 1,000 color images for various kinds of gross and microscopic pictures were stored in the CD-ROM and those were classified according to the chapters, sections, and disease entities. The 'AP' was easy to manipulate, and had advantages of self-learning for students. It could be applied to other fields in which many images were dealt with, such as histology, radiology, endoscopy, dermatology, and plastic surgery. The 'AP' was handy and very useful for medical students to study pathology and it would be a powerful self-learning tool.
