ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and apply the bioaccessibility of Cd in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) to human health risk assessment, and provide reference for the formulation of limit standards. METHODS: The contents of Cd in Coptis chinensis Franch., Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., Lindera aggregate (Sims) Kosterm., and Curcuma kwangsiensis S.G. Lee et C.F. Liang were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The bioaccessibility of Cd in TCMs was investigated by in vitro physiologically based extraction test(PBET) digestion method. And the target hazard quotient (THQ) was applied to assess the health risks of Cd contents. RESULTS: The bioaccessibility of Cd for Coptis chinensis Franch., Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., Lindera aggregate (Sims) Kosterm., and Curcuma kwangsiensis S.G. Lee et C.F. Liang was 49.0%, 40.0%, 44.9% and 65.7%, respectively. The results of risk assessment showed that before extraction, THQ values of Cd for Coptis chinensis Franch., Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., Lindera aggregate (Sims) Kosterm., and Curcuma kwangsiensis S.G. Lee et C.F. Liang were 1.895, 1.045, 1.446 and 1.653, respectively; after extraction, THQ values of Cd for the four types of TCMs were 0.929, 0.418, 0.649 and 1.077, respectively. CONCLUSION: Cd in the four types of TCMs cannot be completely absorbed in the artificial gastrointestinal phase, and the risks of Cd are reduced after extraction. Except THQ for Curcuma kwangsiensis S.G. Lee et C.F. Liang, the THQ values are below the value of 1, indicating very low health risks for the other three types of TCMs after extraction. In this study, the bioaccessibility of heavy metals in TCMs is applied to the health risk assessment model in order to provide a scientific basis for objectively evaluating the health risks of heavy metals in TCMs and formulating a scientific and reasonable heavy metal limit standards.

ABSTRACT

In preparation for a legal implementation of EU-regulation 1829/2003, the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) has been requested by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management to conduct final environmental risk assessments for all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and products containing or consisting of GMOs that are authorized in the European Union under Directive 2001/18/EC or Regulation 1829/2003/EC. The request covers scope(s) relevant to the Gene Technology Act. The request does not cover GMOs that VKM already has conducted its final risk assessments on. However, the Directorate requests VKM to consider whether updates or other changes to earlier submitted assessments are necessary. MON810 notification C/F/95/12-02 is approved under Directive 90/220/EEC for cultivation, seed production, import and processing into feeding stuffs and industrial purposes since 22 April 1998 (Commission Decision 98/294/EC). In December 1997, food and food ingredients derived from the progeny of maize line MON810 were notified under Article 5 of Regulation (EC) No 258/97 on novel foods and novel food ingredients. In addition, existing food and feed products containing, consisting of or produced from MON810 were notified according to Articles 8 and 20 of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 and were placed in the Community Register in 2005. Three applications for renewal of the authorisation for continued marketing of (1) existing food and food ingredients produced from MON810; (2) feed consisting of and/or containing maize MON810, and MON810 for feed use (including cultivation); and (3) food and feed additives, and feed materials produced from maize MON810 within the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 were submitted in 2007. Maize MON810 has previously been assessed by the VKM GMO Panel commissioned by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management in connection with the national finalisation of the procedure of the notification C/F/95/12/02 (VKM 2007a,b). In addition, MON810 has been evaluated by the VKM GMO Panel as a component of several stacked GM maize events (VKM 2005a,b,c, VKM 2007c, VKM 2008, VKM 2009, VKM 2012). Due to the publication of updated guidelines for environmental risk assessments of genetically modified plants and new scientific literature, the VKM GMO Panel has decided to deliver an updated environmental risk assessment of MON810. The environmental risk assessment of the maize MON810 is based on information provided by the applicant in the notification C/F/95/12/02 and application EFSA/GMO/RX/MON810, and scientific comments from EFSA and other member states made available on the EFSA website GMO Extranet. The risk assessment also considered other peer-reviewed scientific literature as relevant. The VKM GMO Panel has evaluated MON810 with reference to its intended uses in the European Economic Area (EEA), and according to the principles described in the Norwegian Food Act, the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety has also decided to take account of the appropriate principles described in the EFSA guidelines for the risk assessment of GM plants and derived food and feed (EFSA 2006, 2011a), the environmental risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2010), the selection of comparators for the risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2011b), and for the post-market environmental monitoring of GM plants (EFSA 2006, 2011c). The scientific risk assessment of maize MON810 include molecular characterisation of the inserted DNA and expression of the target protein, comparative assessment of agronomic and phenotypic characteristics, unintended effects on plant fitness, potential for gene transfer, interactions between the GM plant and target and non-target organisms, effects on biogeochemical processes and evaluations of the post-market environmental plan. In line with its mandate, VKM emphasised that assessments of sustainable development, societal utility and ethical considerations, according to the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and Regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, shall not be carried out by the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms. The genetically modified maize MON810 was developed to provide protection against certain lepidopteran target pests, including European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and species belonging to the genus Sesamia. Protection is achieved through expression in the plant of the insecticidal Cry protein, Cry1Ab, derived from Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki, a common soil bacterium. Molecular characterisation Appropriate analysis of the integration site including flanking sequences and bioinformatics analyses have been performed to analyse the construct integrated in the GM plant. Updated bioinformatics analyses revealed that one ORF shared sequence similarity to a putative HECT-ubiquitin ligase protein. The VKM GMO Panel found no safety implications from the interruption of this gene sequence. Analyses of leaf, grains, whole plant tissue and pollen from the maize MON 810 demonstrated that the Cry1Ab protein is expressed at very low levels in all tissues tested and constitutes less than 0.001% of the fresh weight in each tissue. The cry1Ab gene is the only transgene expressed in line MON 810 and was expressed highest in the leaves. The stability of the genetic modification has been demonstrated over several generations. Event MON810 and the physical, chemical and functional characteristics of the proteins have previously been evaluated by The VKM Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms, and considered satisfactory (VKM 2007a,b). Comparative assessment: Comparative analyses of data from field trials located at representative sites and environments in the USA and Europe indicate that maize MON810 is agronomically and phenotypically equivalent to the conventional counterpart and commercially available reference varieties, with the exception of the lepidopteran-protection trait, conferred by the expression of the Cry1Ab protein. The field evaluations support a conclusion of no phenotypic changes indicative of increased plant weed/pest potential of MON810 compared to conventional maize. Evaluations of ecological interactions between maize MON810 and the biotic and abiotic environment indicate no unintended effects of the introduced trait on agronomic and phenotypic characteristics. Environmental risk: There are no reports of the target lepidopteran species attaining pest status on maize in Norway. Since there are no Bt-based insecticides approved for use in Norway, and lepidopteran pests have not been registered in maize, issues related to resistance evolution in target pests are not relevant at present for Norwegian agriculture. Published scientific studies show no or negligible adverse effects of Cry1Ab protein on non-target arthropods that live on or in the vicinity of maize plants. Cultivation of maize MON810 is not considered to represent a threat to the prevalence of red-listed species in Norway. Few studies have been published examining potential effects of Cry1Ab toxin on ecosystems in soil, mineralization, nutrient turnover and soil communities. Some field studies have indicated that root exudates and decaying plant material containing Cry proteins may affect population size and activity of rhizosphere organisms (soil protozoa and microorganisms). Most studies conclude that effects on soil microorganisms and microbial communities are transient and minor compared to effects caused by agronomic and environmental factors. However, data are only available from short term experiments and predictions of potential long term effects are difficult to deduce. Few studies have assessed the impact of Cry proteins on non-target aquatic arthropods and the fate of these proteins in senescent and decaying maize detritus in aquatic environments. However, exposure of non-target organisms to Cry proteins in aquatic ecosystems is likely to be very low, and potential exposure of Bt toxins to non-target organisms in aquatic ecosystems in Norway is considered to be negligible. Maize is the only representative of the genus Zea in Europe, and there are no cross-compatible wild or weedy relatives outside cultivation with which maize can hybridise and form backcross progeny. Vertical gene transfer in maize therefore depends on cross-pollination with other conventional or organic maize varieties. In addition, unintended admixture of genetically modified material in seeds represents a possible way for gene flow between different crop cultivations. The risk of pollen flow from maize volunteers is negligible under Norwegian growing conditions. In addition to the data presented by the applicant, the VKM GMO Panel is not aware of any scientific report of increased establishment and spread of maize MON810 and any change in survival (including over-wintering), persistence and invasiveness capacity. Because the general characteristics of maize MON810 are unchanged, insect resistance are not likely to provide a selective advantage outside cultivation in Norway. Since MON810 has no altered agronomic and phenotypic characteristics, except for the specific target pest resistance, the VKM GMO Panel is of the opinion that the likelihood of unintended environmental effects due to the establishment and survival of maize MON810 will be no different to that of conventional maize varieties in Norway. Overall conclusion: The VKM GMO Panel concludes that cultivation of maize MON810 is unlikely to have any adverse effect on the environment in Norway.

ABSTRACT

Herein, we report a case of in-the-bag dislocation of a WIOL-CF® polyfocal full-optics intraocular lens (IOL), without a history of trauma. A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital with the chief complaint of sudden-onset visual disturbance in his left eye. He had undergone uneventful phacoemulsification with WIOL-CF® IOL implantation in the left eye at the local clinic 7 years prior. In fundus examination, IOL-capsular bag complex dislocated into the posterior vitreous was observed. We believe this is the first report of in-the-bag dislocation of a WIOL-CF® IOL that has been subluxated or dislocated in a characteristic pattern, not an in-the-bag pattern.

ABSTRACT

The Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA) and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) requested the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (Vitenskapskomiteen for mattrygghet, VKM) for an opinion of potential risks to biodiversity and agriculture in Norway associated with import of seeds for sowing and cultivation of insect-resistant and herbicide tolerant genetically modified maize Bt11 under Directive 2001/18/EC (Notification C/F/96.05.10). The notification is still pending for authorisation in the European Union. VKM is also requested to assess the applicant´s post-market environmental monitoring plan, and the management measures suggested in the draft implementing decision of the European Commission. As the scope of the notification does not cover food and feed uses of maize Bt11, VKM was not asked for a health risk assessment of maize Bt11. However, VKM has decided to update a previous safety evaluation of the food and feed uses of maize Bt11 and derived products (VKM, 2014). VKM appointed a working group consisting of members from the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms, the Panel on Alien Organisms and trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the VKM staff to answer the requests. The Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms assessed and approved the final report. The genetically modified maize Bt11 was developed to provide protection against certain lepidopteran target pests, such as the European corn borer (ECB, Ostrinia nubilalis), and some species belonging to the genus Sesamia . The insect resistence is achieved by the expression of a truncated form of a Cry1Ab protein encoded by a modified cry1Ab gene derived from the soil microorganism Bacillus thuringiensis subsp kurstaki HD-1. Maize Bt11 also expresses the phosphinothricin - N - ace tyltransferase (pat) gene, derived from the soil microorganism Streptomyces viridochromogenes strain Tu494, which encodes the enzyme: phosphinothricin acetyl transferase (PAT). PAT protein confers tolerance to the herbicidal active substance glufosinate-ammonium. The PAT protein expressed in Bt11 was used as a selectable marker to facilitate the selection process of transformed plant cells and is not intended for weed management purposes. Since the scope of the notification C/F/96.05.10 does not cover the use of glufosinate-ammonium-containing herbicides on maize Bt11, potential effects due to the use of such herbicides on maize Bt11 are not considered by VKM. In delivering its scientific opinion, VKM considered relevant peer-reviewed scientific publications and information provided by the applicant in the notification C/F/96.05.10, the renewal application EFSA/GMO/RX/Bt11, and scientific opinions and comments from EFSA and other EU-member states. VKM has evaluated maize Bt11 with reference to its intended uses in the European Economic Area (EEA), and according to the principles described in the Norwegian Food Act, the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety has also decided to take account of the appropriate principles described in the EFSA guidelines for the risk assessment of GM plants and derived food and feed (EFSA 2011a), the environmental risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2010a), selection of comparators for the risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA, 2011b) and for the post-market environmental monitoring of GM plants (EFSA, 2011c). The scientific risk assessment of maize Bt11 includes molecular characterisation of the inserted DNA and expression of novel proteins, comparative assessment of agronomic and phenotypic characteristics, nutritional assessments, toxicology and allergenicity. An evaluation of unintended effects on plant fitness, potential for gene transfer, interactions between the GM plant and target and non-target organisms, effects on biogeochemical processes, the post-market environmental monitoring plan and coexistence measures at the farm level has also been undertaken. It is emphasised that the VKM mandate does not include assessments of contribution to sustainable development, societal utility and ethical considerations, according to the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and Regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act. These considerations are therefore not part of the risk assessment provided by the VKM. Molecular Characterization: Appropriate analyses of the integration site, inserted DNA sequence, flanking regions, and bioinformatics have been performed. The molecular characterisation reported by the applicant shows that the DNA-fragment containing the cry1Ab and pat genes, is integrated as a single copy at a single locus in the nuclear genome of maize Bt11 and that it is stably inherited as a dominant trait. VKM considers the molecular characterisation of maize Bt11 satisfactory. Comparative Assessment: Comparative analyses of data from field trials located at representative sites and environments in North America and Europe indicates that maize Bt11 is compositionally equivalent to its conventional counterpart, with the exception of the herbicide tolerance and insect resistance traits, conferred by the expression of the PAT and Cry1Ab proteins. However, data on the amino acid tryptophan, is only given in one out of six studies. Based on current knowledge, VKM concludes that maize Bt11 is compositionally equivalent to conventional maize. The data provided by the applicant are not sufficient to show that Bt11 maize is phenotypically and agronomically equivalent to conventional near-isogenic maize lines. The agronomic assessment data are provided from one growing season in the North America and one growing season in France. This is not considered to be sufficient for representative testing of agricultural environments. Food and Feed Risk Assessment: Whole food feeding studies have not indicated any adverse health effects of maize Bt11. These studies further support that maize Bt11 is nutritionally equivalent to conventional maize. The Cry1Ab and PAT proteins do not show sequence resemblance to other known toxins or IgE allergens, nor have they been reported to cause IgE mediated allergic reactions. Some studies have however indicated a potential role of Cry-proteins as adjuvants in allergic reactions. Based on current knowledge, the VKM concludes that maize Bt11 is nutritionally equivalent to conventional maize varieties. It is unlikely that the Cry1Ab and PAT proteins will introduce a toxic or allergenic potential in food or feed based on maize Bt11 compared to conventional maize. Environmental Risk Assessment: Maize is the only representative of the genus Zea in Europe, and there are no cross-compatible wild or weedy relatives outside cultivated maize with which maize can hybridise and form backcross progeny. Published scientific studies showed that the likelihood of negative effects of Cry1Ab protein on non-target arthropods that live on or in the vicinity of maize plants is low. In Norway, the maize cultivation is marginal. The total crop area of forage maize is estimated to 2000-2800 decares, equivalent to less than 0.1% of the areas with cereal crops. The area of individual fields is limited by the topography such that the quantity of maize pollen produced under flowering is also limited. The potential exposure of Cry1Ab-containing maize pollen on non-target lepidopteran species in Norway is therefore negligible. Cultivation of maize Bt11 is not considered to represent a threat to the prevalence of red-listed species in Norway. Exposure of nontarget organisms to Cry proteins in aquatic ecosystems is likely to be very low, and potential exposure of Cry proteins to non-target organisms in aquatic ecosystems in Norway is considered to be negligible. VKM concludes that, although the data on the fate of the Cry1Ab protein and its potential interactions in soil are limited, the relevant scientific publications analysing the Cry1Ab protein, together with the relatively broad knowledge about the environmental fate of other Cry1 proteins, do not indicate significant direct effects on the soil environment. Despite limited number of studies, most studies conclude that effects on soil microorganisms and microbial communities are transient and minor compared to effects caused by agronomic and environmental factors. However, data are only available from short-term experiments and predictions of potential long-term effects are difficult to deduce. Coexistence: VKM concludes that separation distances of 200 meters most likely will ensure coexistence between genetically modified maize and conventional and organic maize varieties in Norway. ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the metabolomics characteristic of neuromyelities optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.Methods Ultra high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) was used to identify plasma metabolites in 16 patients with NMOSD and 8 healthy controls.At the same time,the identification of metabolites in cerebrospinal fluid of 8 NMOSD patients and 5 healthy controls was completed.Differential metabolites screening and metabolomic pathway analysis were performed by diversified data analysis methods.Results Compared with healthy control group,the content of 8 substances such as Cis.8.11.14.Eicosatrienoic acid in the plasma of NMOSD patients was increased.The content of 8 substances such as L-glutamine acid were decreased.There was no significant difference in the metabolites between Aquaporin 4 (AQP-4) antibody positive and negative NMOSD plasma.The content of 6 substances such as 3-hydroxybutyric acid in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with NMOSD was reduced.Conclusions The distribution of metabolites in plasma between NMOSD patients and healthy controls was significantly different.There was no significant difference in metabolites between AQP-4 antibody positive and negative NMOSD plasma.There are some differences in metabolites between cerebrospinal fluid of NMOSD patients and healthy controls.A variety of amino acid abnormalities,sphingomyelin dysfunction,energy metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction were involved in the pathogenesis of NMOSD.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Ultrasound is one of the most used tools in physiotherapy, its LIPUS modality allows to treat musculoskeletal injuries, but like the conventional ultrasound it is contraindicated its application in areas close to growth cartilage by a possible closure of this one. In the literature there is no conclusive evidence of this contraindication, so the objective of the present study is to evaluate the effects of doses equivalent to underwater LIPUS on the histomorphometry of the proximal tibial epiphysis growth plate in an animal model. LIPUS was applied in underwater mode in the right pelvic limb to 8 mice in p 15 for 4 days, 2 times a day. On completion of 8 sessions the histology of the stimulated limb growth plate was sacrificed and the histology. When evaluating the histomorphometry of the plaque, a significant increase in the thickness and area of the proliferative zone stimulated with LIPUS (p = 0.048) was observed. In the hypertrophic area were observed no significant differences in thickness or areas, but in the hypertrophic area there were significant changes in the histological organization, observing a significant increase of the entire columns in the stimulated plaque (p = 0.04). LIPUS in underwater modality modifies the histomorphometry of the proximal epiphyseal PC of the tibia of rodents in the late postnatal stage, promoting proliferation and columnar organization in the proliferative and hypertrophic zone, respectively.


RESUMEN: El ultrasonido es una de las herramientas más utilizadas en fisioterapia, su modalidad LIPUS permite tratar lesiones músculo-esqueléticas, pero al igual que el ultrasonido convencional está contraindicada su aplicación en zonas próximas a cartílago de crecimiento por un posible cierre de éste. En la literatura no existe evidencia contundente de esta contraindicación, por lo cual el objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar los efectos de dosis equivalentes a LIPUS subacuático sobre la histomorfometría de la placa de crecimiento de la epífisis proximal de tibia en un modelo animal. Metodología. Se aplicó LIPUS en modalidad subacuática en el miembro pélvico derecho a 8 ratones en p 15 por 4 días, 2 veces al día. Al cumplir 8 sesiones se sacrificaron y se evaluó la histología de la placa de crecimiento del miembro estimulado. Al evaluar la histomorfometría de la placa se observó un aumento significativo en el espesor y el área de la zona proliferiva estimulada con LIPUS (p=0.048). En la zona hipertrófica no se observaron diferencias significativas en el espesor ni en las áreas, pero si existieron cambios significativos en la organización histológica de la zona, observando un aumento significativo de las columnas completas en la placa estimulada (p=0,04). El LIPUS en modalidad subacuática modifica la histomorfometría de la PC epifisiaria proximal de la tibia de roedores en el etapa postnatal tardía, promoviendo la proliferación y la organización columnar en la zona proliferativa e hipertrófica, respectivamente.

Objective To observe the effect and correlation of serum homocysteine(HCY),mitochondrial coupling factor-6 (CF-6) and urine trace protein(UMA) level in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease complicated with heart failure.Methods From June 2012 to June 2016 in Tangshan City worker's Hospital of Hebei Province branch from coronary heart disease with heart failure in 200 cases,as the observation group,patients received conventional treatment,according to the results of treatment were divided into effective group(n=168) and ineffective group (n=32).The treatment of hospitalized patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure in 100,set to the coronary heart disease group and heart failure group.At the same time,100 cases were admitted in the same period of healthy people as the healthy control group.Serum HCY levels were determined by enzymatic cycling method.Analysis of serum CF-6 level was detected by radioimmunoassay,using immune scattering to detect urine UMA turbidity,HCY,CF-6,UMA analysis and observation of the level of diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease in patients with heart failure.Results HCY,CF-6 and UMA in the observation group,CHD group,heart failure group were significantly higher than that of the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),There was no significant difference in coronary heart disease group and heart failure group in HCY,CF-6 and UMA level(P>0.05).HCY,CF-6 and UMA in the observation group were significantly higher than that of patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).HCY,CF-6 and UMA levels of effective group and ineffective group were higher than the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).HCY,CF-6,UMA effective level in invalid group were low,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).There was a positive correlation between rate of coronary heart disease with heart failure and HCY,CF-6 and UMA(P<0.05).Conclusion The detection of serum HCY,CF-6 and UMA levels in patients with coronary heart disease complicated with heart failure may play a role in the observation of the curative effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate chemical constituents and new antimicrobial agents among essential oils from the rhizomes of Curcuma aeruginosa (C. aeruginosa) Roxb., Curcuma glans K. Larsen & J. Mood and Curcuma cf. xanthorrhiza Roxb. Methods The essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Agar-well diffusion assay was used to study the anti-microbial activity and also broth-micro dilution techniques were examined for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against four bacterial strains and yeast. Results The gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy analysis showed monoterpenes predominantly (88.53%) in the rhizome oil of Curcuma cf. xanthorrhiza. Sesquiterpenes (50.10%) was the most abundant component in the essential oil of C. glans, while monoterpenes (45.55%) and sesquiterpenes (45.81%) were found in C. aeruginosa with a significant amount. The major components of C. aeruginosa were characterized as camphor (29.39%) and germacrone (21.21%). Germacrone (15.76%), β-pinene (9.97%) and camphor (9.96%) were found as major compounds in the rhizome oils of C. glans while α-terpinolene (24.86%) and p-cymen-7-ol (12.17%) were found as major compositions in Curcuma cf. xanthorrhiza. The essential oils were tested against four bacterial strains and yeast. As a result, the rhizome oil of C. aeruginosa exhibited potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus [inhibition zone (21.94 ± 0.24) mm, MIC 125 μg/mL], Bacillus cereus [inhibition zone (20.83 ± 0.36) mm, MIC 125 μg/mL], and Candida albicans [inhibition zone (11.60 ± 0.30) mm, MIC 250 μg/mL]. Conclusions The essential oils from three Curcuma species possessed greater activity against the gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) than gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The results suggest that the essential oils from the fresh rhizome of Curcuma spp. might be a potential source of natural antimicrobial substances.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of Jianpi Yiqi, Bushen Fenjing combined with oxaliplatin+CF/5-FU on colorectal cancer.MethodsEighty patients with colorectal cancer who were treated in our hospital from January 2014 to December 2015 were randomly divided into observation group(40cases) and control group (40cases).The control group was given oxaliplatin+CF/5-FU treatment, the observation group in the control group based on the application of Spleen Qi, Bushen fill essence treatment, observed before and after treatment of two groups of serum tumor markers, clinical symptoms and living conditions, changes, record adverse reactions.ResultsThe observation effect of 82.50% was significantly higher than that of the control group (62.50%).The QOL score (37.8±5.6) was significantly higher than that of the control group (33.5±3.1) and the adverse reaction rate was 30.00% (P<0.05).The difference between the two groups was significant (P<0.05).ConclusionThe effect of invigorating spleen qi and tonifying siren solution combined with oxaliplatin+CF/5-FU on colorectal cancer can improve the clinical symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients.

Objective To study the step aceuracy of 252Cf neutron afterloading radiotherapy machine and the dose deviation caused by step deviation.Methods EBT3 film was used to measure the steps of the 252Cf neutron source,and then the center of each 252Cf neutron source was identified by measuring the optical density value by using the ImageJ software.Double ion chambersmethod was used to measure the dose deviation dlue to the 252 Cf neutron source position shift.Results 252 Cf neutron source step accuracy may amount to 0.01 mm using EBT3 film measurement,when 252Cf neutron source position deviation is less than 3 mm,the dose deviation is less than 2.5%.Conclusions The study on the step accuracy and position deviation of the 252Cf neutron source can provide a reference for the quality control standard of the 252Cf neutron afterloading radiotherapy machine.

ABSTRACT

Polychaetes play a significant role in benthic communities' ecology; they dominate the infauna, recycle nutrients from the water column and are commonly used as biological indicators. Along the Gulf of Urabá (Colombian Caribbean), particularly for the zones of the Marirrío Bay and the Rionegro Cove, there are no reports about ecological aspects of polychaete species; only a few taxonomic studies have been conducted. In this research we evaluate the relationship between polychaete species associated with red mangrove roots, Rhizophora mangle, and some physicochemical variables of the water column; also, we made some notes about the spatial distributions of polychaetes species within the two study areas. We found that the environmental variables that best explain polychaetes community segregation are the dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity; temperature seems to have not a significant effect. In terms of spatial distribution, we found that Alitta succinea, Capitella cf. capitata and Ficopomatus miamiensis occupied the inner, middle and outer zones for both study area and seasons, while Stenoninereis sp. 1 (rainy and dry season) and the exotic polychaete Ficopomatus uschakovi (rainy season) were found just in Rionegro Cove. Finally, the species Nicolea modesta is registered by first time for the Gulf of Urabá, Colombian Caribbean.


Los poliquetos tienen un papel importante en la ecología de las comunidades bénticas, dominan la infauna, reciclan nutrientes de la columna de agua y son comúnmente usados como indicadores biológicos. En el Golfo de Urabá (Caribe Colombiano), específicamente para las zonas de Bahía Marirrío y Ensenada de Rionegro no existen estudios sobre la ecología de los poliquetos, solo se han desarrollado algunos estudos taxonómicos. En esta investigación se evaluó la relación entre algunas variables fisicoquímicas y las especies de poliquetos encontradas. Adicionalmente, se realizaron algunas observaciones sobre las distribución espacial de estas especies en las dos zonas de estudio. Se encontró que las variables que mejor explican las segregación de las especies de poliquetos fueron el oxígeno disuelto y la conductividad eléctrica; la temperatura no tuvo un efecto significativo. En términos de distribución espacial se encontró que las especies Alitta succinea, Capitella cf. capitata y Ficopomatus miamiensis ocuparon las zonas interna, media y externa de las dos áreas de estudio en las dos temporadas de muestreo; mientras que Ficopomatus uschakovi (temporada de lluvia) y Stenoninereis sp. 1 (ambas temporadas) fueron registradas solamente la Ensenada de Rionegro en diferentes temporadas. Finalmente, las especies Nicolea modesta es registrada por primera vez para el Golfo de Urabá.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of acute angle closure after cataract surgery using an accommodative intraocular lens (IOL), WIOL-CF® (GELMED, Praha, Czech). CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old male patient underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of WIOL-CF® into the capsular bag. Seven months after the surgery, a sudden increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with angle closure was observed. Ultrabiomicroscopy revealed a dislocated WIOL-CF® that was pushing the peripheral iris anteriorly. Despite the use of IOP-lowering medication and peripheral laser iridotomy, IOP was not controlled. After the use of cycloplegics, the angle was widened and IOP decreased; however, after nine days, the WIOL-CF® was completely dislocated into the anterior chamber and so was removed. CONCLUSIONS: When performing cataract surgery using WIOL-CF®, a possibility of dislocation of IOL and subsequent angle closure should be considered.

background: Percutaneous septal ablation is a therapeutic option for patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy refrac-tory to optimal medical therapy. However, results of initial persistence and long-term safety are still controversial. Objectives: The aim of this study was to report percutaneous alcohol septal ablation technique, clinical and functional outcome, cardiovascular events and its impact on long-term follow-up. Methods: A total of 23 patients were included in the study. Functional class (FC), left ventricular outflow tract gradient before and after the procedure and long-term cardiovascular events were evaluated. results: Median follow-up was 52 months (IR 33-72). All patients were in FC III or IV prior to the procedure, under maximum tolerated medical therapy. The procedure was successful in 91% of cases, with 85% of patients currently in FC I and 15% in FC II. Baseline left ventricular outflow tract gradient decreased from 75 mmHg (95% CI 51-89) to 25 mmHg (95% CI 10-37) (p <0.003) and with Valsalva maneuver from 118 mmHg (95% CI 88-152) to 38 mmHg (95% CI 16-69) (p <0.0002), persisting in the long-term follow-up. During hospitalization, two patients presented with complete atrioventricular block requiring permanent pacemaker implantation. No cardiovascular deaths occurred during follow up. Conclusions: Alcohol septal ablation is a promising option for the treatment of a selected population with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, generating sustained clinical and functional improvement with low incidence of events in the long-term follow up.

Objective To compare the efficacy between californium?252 ( 252 Cf ) neutron intraluminal brachytherapy combined with external?beam radiotherapy with lead?shielding pelvic parallel opposing field technique and non?lead?shielding four?field box technique for cervical cancer. Methods A total of 52 patients with stage Ⅱa?Ⅲb cervical squamous cell carcinoma who were admitted to our hospital from 2004 to 2007 were enrolled as subjects and paired by clinical stage, age, tumor size, and degree of anemia. The 26 pairs of patients were divided into lead?shielding pelvic parallel opposing field group (lead?shielding group) and non?lead?shielding four?field box group (non?lead?shielding group). For all patients in both groups, 252 Cf neutron brachytherapy was added in external?beam radiotherapy. The local control (LC), overall survival (OS), and disease?free survival (DFS) rates were calculated using the Kaplan?Meier method and analyzed using the log?rank test. The difference in the incidence of late complications was analyzed using the McNemar method. Results There were significant differences in 5?year LC, OS, and DFS rates between the lead?shielding group and the non?lead?shielding group (85% vs. 81%, P= 0?? 014;89% vs. 73%, P=0?? 013; 89% vs. 73%, P= 0?? 013 ). There was also significant difference in the incidence of late complications between the lead?shielding group and the non?lead?shielding group ( 12% vs. 23%, P=0?? 008). Conclusions When intraluminal brachytherapy combined with external?beam radiotherapy is used to treat cervical cancer, the centers of the front and back fields should be shielded by lead, regardless of whether the parallel opposing field technique or the four?field box technique is used.

Introdução: a Pseudomonas aeruginosaé conhecida por causar infecção aguda pela produção de toxinas. Alguns espécimes deStaphylococcus são frequentemente reconhecidos como agentes etiológicos de infecções oportunistas em muitos animais e homens. Escherichia colié uma das principais causas de doenças infecciosas humanas. O gênero Candida produz diversos fatores de virulência, as infecções são provavelmente iniciadas por modificações de defesas do hospedeiro. Objetivo: avaliar o efeito antimicrobiano do extrato hexânico de Costus cf. e modulação da atividade antibiótica de Costus cf. Arabicus L. Métodos: o material botânico de Costus cf. Arabicus L., foi coletado no município de Crato, Ceará, Brasil. Para a preparação dos extratos foram coletados folhas e caules frescos, submersos em hexano separadamente por 72 h, sendo apósesse período, filtrado e concentrado em condensador rotativo a vácuo. Foram realizados testes de atividade antimicrobiana (CIM) e modulação da atividade antimicrobiana com cepas padrões e multirresistentes de bactérias e fungos. Resultados: o extrato demonstrou atividade antibacteriana e antifúngica quando combinados com alguns antimicrobianos contra algumas linhagens testadas. Conclusões: portanto, é sugerido que o extrato de Costus cf. pode ser utilizado como uma fonte de productos naturais na terapêutica antimicrobiana e no combate a multirresistência bacteriana e fúngica.

Objetivo: evaluar el efecto antimicrobiano del extracto de hexano de Costus cf. y la modulación de la actividad antibiótica de Costus cf. Arabicus L. Métodos: el material botánico de Costus cf. arabicus L. se recogió en Crato, Ceará, Brasil. Para la preparación de extractos se recogieron las hojas y los tallos frescos por separado y se sumergieron en hexano durante 72 horas, después de eso, se filtró y se concentró en un condensador de vacío rotatorio. Se realizaron ensayos de actividad antimicrobiana (MIC), modulación con cepas multirresistentes y patrones de bacterias y hongos. Resultados: el extracto mostró actividad antibacteriana y antifúngica cuando se combinan con algunos antibióticos contra algunas cepas ensayadas. Conclusiones: por lo tanto, el extracto de Costus cf. se puede utilizar como una fuente de productos naturales en la terapia antimicrobiana y en la lucha contra la resistencia a múltiples fármacos de bacterias y hongos.


Introduction: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is known to cause acute infection due to the production of toxins. Some specimens of Staphylococcus are often recognized as the etiologic agents of opportunistic infections in many animals and humans. Escherichia coli is a leading cause of human infectious diseases. The genus Candida produces several virulence factors. Infections are probably initiated by changes in host defenses. Objective: evaluate the antimicrobial effect of hexane extract of Costus cf. and themodulation of Costus cf. Arabicus. L. antibiotic activity. Methods: botanical material from Costus cf. arabicus L. was collected at Crato, Ceará, Brazil. For the preparation of extracts fresh leaves and stems were collected, separately immersed in hexane for 72 hours, and thereafter filtered and concentrated in a rotary vacuum condenser. Tests of antimicrobial activity (MIC) and antimicrobial activity modulation were conducted with multiresistant strain patterns of bacteria and fungi. Results: the extract showed antibacterial and antifungal activity against some of the strains tested when combined with some antibiotics. Conclusions: therefore, it is suggested that the extract of Costus cf. be used as a source of natural products for antimicrobial therapy and to combat bacterial and fungal multidrug resistance.

Objective To investigate the correlation of endothelial function variation with pulse pressure index in Uygur acute coronary syndrome patients in Xinjiang. Methods Uygur patients were divided into acute coronary syndrome group (n=208) and control group (n=157) according to their Coronary angiography results. Height, weight and blood pressure were measured on admission and basic medical history were recorded. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), three acyl glycerin (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were ex-amined using fasting venous blood;Plasma Coagulation FactorⅧ(CFⅧ) and von Willebrand factor(vWF)were examined using ELISA. Results There are no statistical difference in age, gender, history of hypertension, diabetes history, history of smoking, drinking, body mass index, PPI, HDL-C and FBG between two groups. The systolic pressure, diastolic blood pres-sure, pulse pressure, TG, TC, LDL-C and vWF, CFⅧlevels in acute coronary syndrome group were higher than those in the control group (all P<0.05). The levels of plasma vWF and CFⅧwere positively correlated with pulse pressure and PPI, it also was positively correlated between the levels of plasma vWF and CFⅧ(P<0.01). Conclusion The endothelial func-tion was significantly impaired in Xinjiang Uygur patients with acute coronary syndromes, and vascular endothelial damage was positively correlated with pulse pressure and PPI. The pulse pressure and PPI can be used to evaluate the vascular endo-thelial function indirectly.
